This 75x110mm claret ash bowl emerged from a block of firewood. You see me adjusting and re-chucking the blank a number of times before the natural edge is aligned as I want it. Then you see how I sand the inside without distorting the rim and finally how to re-chuck the bowl to clean up the foot.

Richard you keep correcting yourself when you say “we’ll just do this” to “ill just do it” - when you say “we’ll just do this..” it creates a feeling of inclusion with what you’re doing, which is really positive for the viewer, and for novice turners. Btw great video

This was very instructive. Certainly understand what you meant by the statement that "nothing is free"; a significant amount of effort and fiddling was required to achieve the very attractive looking bowl that you were able to get from this piece. Really appreciate seeing the approach you used to get a relatively flat top.

I was told the ash was felled about three months ago, but it was probably dying as it was easy to sand with none of the clogged abrasive that comes with green timber. The moisture must be about 14°.

Richard, from your other videos I can tell that is a well used little piece of mdf. Is there something about mdf that makes it better for jamming on a bowl bottom than a piece of wood or was it something that just happen to be on hand?
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
The MDF happened to be on hand and about the right thickness. I recycle other people's MDF and plywood waste as screw-chuck spacers and jam-chucks and to protect the drill press table.
