You see a scrap flitch of box elder cut into turning blanks, and ways of stopping a bandsaw blade using off-cuts. Then you see three bowls rough-turned and finally coping with a malfunctioning screw chuck.

I think they still sell that w/o the brake as the 1412 which I have. What blade do you have on it? It looks fresh with the ribbons its cutting

I enjoyed watcjing this. My kids watched too. I have a lo t to learn from how you rough out the blanks. Is Box Elder a softer wood? I found that when I put a blank onto my screw chuck under power that it strips out the wood, and then causes slipping.I can fix that by jamming splinters of wood into the hole, and screwing it back on. Or, when I take the time to screw it on by hand I have better results. That is especially true with the softer woods I have used. I am watching and learning from your channel. Thanks.

Box elder is an Acer and related to maples. It's not particularly hard/tough but usually a pleasure to work. Sounds like screwing on by hand is the better way to go with the that wood. If a screw strips the wood, I move to a larger screw or bring up the tailcentre and get a foot on the bowl ASAP so I can grip it in a chuck.

at about 18:00 you said you wanted the foot to be roughly the size of the chuck. had you already chosen to use those larger jaws or was that more for stability when reverse chucking it for hollowing? thanks for another excellent and educational video.

This is a roughed out bowl, so having a wide foot is more to do with providing more options when I come to remount it for completion.

This was great. Is there any benefit in adding log sealer to the blanks after you rough them out to slow the drying process down a little?
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
I seal the ends of freshly sawn boards and the sides of blanks when the moisture content is above 20% and I'm not turning them within hours of their being cut. For 50 years I've air-dried and sealed the ends of all boards up to 50mm (2-in) thick, along with a few 75mm (3-in) squares cut for suction fit boxes. Thicker boards have been converted to roughed bowls ASAP and set aside to dry unsealed. It helps that I avoid working woods known for warping and splitting unless making a range of wavy bowls. Hi Richard. Love your videos. You use spindle gouges a lot on bowls. I thought that this was a no-no. How do you make it look so safe and easy?
@RichardRaffanwoodturning
@RichardRaffanwoodturning Жыл бұрын
What is a complete no-no on facework and particularly bowls, is using a deep-fluted spindle roughing ground. I prefer a standard ½-in spindle gouge on bowl profiles because the shavings get away faster than from a deep-fluted bowl gouge. And it's a less expensive tool. Have you watched my gouges on bowls? kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3OrZWSgrZVogas

Frustratingly I'm well into what are considered retirement years and no longer up to the workshop tours I used to undertake. On top of that travel insurance to the US for people my age is likely to be more than the airfares, so for that reason alone I don't epect to be in the USA again. I occasionally have students in my own shop, but for no more than two days at a time.
