@@paulpetty3331 Thanks again Paul, My wife has relatives in Alabama. Last time we were there if you can picture this: a bunch of good old boys with their motorcycles parked around a big shade tree, sipping beer and listening to Nascar on the radio. The topic of conversation was tractor motors. LOL, By all means don't be a stranger.

Installed these on a riding mower kzbin.infoUgkxetgfkJxfdT_B2vGYP-uNTLaBbim9OKTD . They were sharp out of the box, although I've never liked blade edges that were coated...not quite as sharp as I personally want. Using my belt sander, I removed the coating from the cutting edges and refined the edge enough to shave with them. So far, after three runs, these blades are holding up as expected. Even after hitting a few fallen 1/2 inch or so branches, the edges are still sharp as heck. No edge dings, no warping, etc. As far as installing them, the cutouts were of the proper size and shape to fit my aging Craftsman mower. Very satisfied.

Thank you sir for posting. I removed my mower deck as opposed to lifting it but the key principle you pointed out is it takes a breaker bar along with a sturdy metal pole to extend it. I had two rounded bolts so I had to special order an Irwin extractor socket and on the ground in the 'rowing' position I was able to finally loosen both of them. Great tip!

That is how the owners manual suggests you approach the job by removing the deck, The machine in the video is not like the new machines today, it is very difficult to remove the deck and even harder to put it back. i've had success removing frozen rounded head bolts by spraying with WD 40, leaving overnight then heating the bolt with a map gas torch while hammering the head. They can then be removed with a no screw head socket wrench. Make sure you have a new set of original hardened bolts for replacement before you begin and put a little grease on the threads.

@@richardspaulding5035 Right on Richard! I was thinking that at the time but the blade & nut would absorb a fair bit of the heat - not to get it red hot of course! mainly to blue the bolt for the cutting socket & soften gunk under the washer & thread a bit.

They haven't rusted, it's just a p155 p00r design. Mine won't budge at all. I've tried popane, hitting the wrench repeatedly with a hammer etc. The only thing I haven'ttried yet is aceylene, a breaker bar, or an impact wrench. Yeah, I watched how much force you were exerting, that was enough to strip the nut, you got lucky... this really is a s0rry design for attaching the blade to the spinner. I tried the breaker bar (a road sign square pole, the only thing that would fit my huge wrench end) and all this method did was strip the nut.
@richardspaulding5035
@richardspaulding5035 2 жыл бұрын
Where I was at, I felt I had nothing to lose. I did not think I could not use acetylene because the spindle housing was made out of aluminum. In any event I was prepared to replace the spindle should things had not worked out they it did. If you were using a wrench that may be why the bolt stripped. You really needed a 6-point impact socket

I wonder if you could rest that breaker bar against that steel column, and then start the engine and engage the blades. I remove crank shaft pulley bolts on cars that way. Just make sure you're 100% sure of the rotation direction or else you'll have a breaker bar flying thru the air.

not sure of your mower but. it takes 10 minutes to take the deck off and 10 to put it back( on mine)... 5 pins and a cable. that way you don't have the thing jacked up in the air and you pull it out and work on it. in the same sense... you have a garage and I have a yard lol...so 10 minutes in the yard probably 5 minutes in a garage. I recommend taking the deck off to work on it versus this .

Thanks Steve; I like the way I do it, this was an unusual case whereas the blades were frozen. Usually, it is 2 minutes to raise it up less than 5 to change the blades and 1 minute to lower it back down. My neighbor called me last Saturday evening. He wanted to know if I could swap his blades in the morning. He had hit a rock earlier in the day. I was not going to be home so I told him bring it over now. He was in and out in less than 10 minutes total. If you enjoy struggling with your deck, I wish you many more years of happiness.

@richardspaulding5035
@richardspaulding5035 Жыл бұрын
I think it was just corosion. That was the first time having that issue with this machine. I had had the machine for about 5 or 6 years when that occurred. Prior to that I had changed the blades at the start of each cutting season without much difficulty. For reasons I don't recall I had gone two seasons with that set of blades when I had the problems getting them off. If anything, I would coat the nut with Permatex Anti-Seize compound.

Why does the bolt on the spindle turn also while I’m trying to get the blade off
@richardspaulding5035
@richardspaulding5035 4 жыл бұрын
If you are using a piece of wood to keep the blade from turning while loosening the nut and the spindle turns also then most likely the end of the spindle that locks in the blade is stripped. if you will notice on the new blade the center hole is in a pattern usually like a star shape. If that star shape has worn or stripped off the bottom of the spindle the hole thing will turn. if that is the case you will need to order a new spindle. There are videos on KZbin to show how to replace the spindle. Last time I replaced one of my spindles it was about $50. let me know how you make out.

You must have been using a 12-point socket for that to have happened. Pick up a 24mm 6-point impact socket as that might still work. A 15/16 standard socket is slightly tighter than the 24 mm socket If you want to try that. All that is assuming your spindle nut is the same size as the one in the video. Do not use a touch as the spindle housing is likely made of aluminum. Stay in touch as I may have other ideas if that does not work.

Thanks for the comment Bob; I do not think my tools are that fancy. However I suppose if you are an individual who owns no tools at all they would appear to be so. The lift in the video was purchase at Lowes for under 200 dollars. If you own a lawn tractor it is a worthy investment. Anyone who owns a socket set should have a breaker bar. All I did was slip a pipe over it. As far as the ratcheting come along a simple chain would do however the tool can be purchased at most hardware stores for about 30 or 40 dollars. If your interested in doing repairs yourself it requires some investment in tools. Thanks for watching my channel.

The longer you leave the blades on the tighter they get. Especially when you are using it as a woods mower. Believe me I know. Hitting brush logs and rocks from time to time because I know I'm getting ready to change my blades actually just tightens up the blades. Picture hitting those rocks it's like hitting a hammer and tightening the blade. Best thing to do is not use it as a woods mower. Lol.
