Should you remove refs from all sports? Just call balls and strikes with computers in baseball. The technology will be there eventually to do it all. Refs are also part of the game. What is being missed is Kincaid, on the previous play, also had a first down. The spot was horrendous. Even if he didn't get it, it was far closer than the spot that was given. That was twice in a row. This, and how the critical moment always seems to go the chief's way, is why fans won't let it go, and it's annoying but understandable. The number of breaks in critical moments is starting to go beyond random variance, and that is why the nfl has a problem and has to deal with it even though it is nearly certain nothing shady is going on. In the military, they talk about an "appearence of inpropriety" is just as bad as something real even if it isn't true. That is what we have here.

So is your solution to tell refs to call all plays to go AGAINST the Chiefs to stop the complainers? How long before the other side complains enough to send it back the other way. Any attempts to influence how refs call is not good.
@mistfitsable
@mistfitsable 7 күн бұрын
@@kathleenlange1823 not against the chiefs. But the benefit of the doubt when it comes to ball spot should be in favor of the offense. Josh definitely got that ball over the line. He didnt pass the line to gain but he was directly over it in every still frame and slow mo replay I have seen. One ref (the closer one with a better view) called it a 1st down with the spot we all saw in the replays. The other line judge came from across the back side and called it short. Why did the umpire decide to go with the short of line to gain spot call instead of the 1st down call knowing it likely was going to be too close to overturn? Makes you think..
@kathleenlange1823
@kathleenlange1823 7 күн бұрын
@ the line superimposed by TV is not accurate. They point this out frequently. The only directly overhead view I saw (assuming it was not AI or somehow messed with) showed Allen’s head and a little bit of back shoulder over the line. He was holding the ball tight to his chest AWAY from the line. The ball was the depth of his chest short of line to gain. Again the TV line is not exact, so who knows. I’m sure had the call been 1st down Bills, it would not likely have been overturned. My main point was really that darn near every game the Chiefs win, if there is a controversial call, people scream about cheating on the refs part (if not the Chiefs themselves). There are iffy calls and outright wrong calls in every game and there is no complaining after a few days. People chalk it up to human error. They can electronically track the ball, but how do you track player body parts that may be down before the ball crosses etc. We see only a 2-D image of a 3-D event--not sure how satisfied viewers will ever be when their team loses. Also people assume that call cost the game. Unless it’s a TD called back a single play can never be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to have cost a game. It surely is easy to believe it though. I live in STL. We hated the Patriots and thought the refs cheated for them. Looking back at replays now, you see missed stuff on both sides--but it still seems the Pats got an unfair amount of calls their way. Life has never been 100% fair and I doubt it can ever be made that way. Unfortunate as that is

@@kathleenlange1823 You are missing the point. What he is saying is that these plays, which are either fouls that never happened or fouls that did happen and were ignored always favor the Chiefs. @retrocny5625

@@kathleenlange1823 Overhead angle isn't direct 90 degrees looking straight down. Can't be certain of accuracy there. One of the very first replays CBS showed immediately after the play, was from the camera on the 1st down markers. Looking straight down the line to gain. By definition it can't really be inaccurate. They zoomed in the camera, they played it as slowly as they could and during the play Josh gets a bit of a 2nd effort and during that bit of forward progress, about the first 2-3 inches of the ball passes through the line to gain. He's got the ball clutched to his chest, but the nose of the football is really in his left armpit or under his left shoulder. Well, almost the entire left half of his body from the waist up was over the line. I really haven't talked to anyone who's watched the game, like one of these guys was saying, who didn't think it was. All the CBS guys, Gene Steratore and Romo & Nantz, all agreed it was a first down. What people want to know is WHY the line judge ahead of the play, who could see the ball, was coming in to mark it as a first down....but the down judge(I think?) was coming in from behind the play, who had no view of the ball, ruled it short and overruled the line judge. Why was his call the one they went with if he didn't have the best view? I haven't heard anyone explain that. The ruling on the field was wrong and because it takes a lot to overturn a call on the field, especially in a situation like this, they weren't gonna overturn it. In my view it's a first down, and I think it would've been ruled one in pretty much any regular season game this year, or possibly if this game was being played in Buffalo because I've always felt the home team gets a little more benefit of the doubt in these kinds of situations. Not always, but usually it feels like. Just doesn't sit right with me. It's not even to argue that the Bills would've won if it was, still loads of time in the game, no guarantee the Bills score points there, but the Chiefs benefitted massively from this call and they really shouldn't have.

The current ball tracking tech that the NFL has tried is accurate to about 6 inches, which means that on that fourth down play it would be just as accurate as the line judges or, more likely, worse. That's why it has to be perfect. Josh's shoulder and part of his helmet went over the line, but the ball didn't. New angles with overlaid line show Josh Allen clearly picked up the first down against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship It was clear as day that it was a first down. Y’all can try to belittle the league’s influence if you want but they literally gifted the chiefs a possession in the 4th quarter of the AFC title game In front of 50 million people and have no shame. Some say that this happened at around 13 minute mark in the 4th QT. But what you don’t understand is the bills had just scored to take the lead then they stopped the Chiefs and had them punt back to Buffalo. Buffalo was then driving for another score. Whether it be a field goal or a touchdown plus maybe a two point conversion. Those two plays back to back where the ball was not spotted correctly on 3rd down and the 4th down play where the bills made the line to gain, totally messed up the momentum of the game for the bills. Buffalo had taken the game by its throat and had KC on it heels.

The odds were that it was going to get shut down again. And everyone wants to believe this despite the fact there is no view or angle of the football crossing the line. None. Out of all possible camera angles not one of them shows the football. Not that it matters. All that goes away with 3:33 left and Allen has the football. Allen scores a TD and Allen wins. Allen kicks a FG and Allen ties. No penalties. No odd rulings. Just go score and NONE of this matters. But Allen failed AGAIN. Just like he failed last year at home when he was in the exact same position. Two drives to win the game and 0 points. That's why Buffalo lost. NFL officiating sucks. Simillar to what I was thinking. Sure they can microchip the ball but that will only tell us that the ball did or did not cross the line, but not when the player is officially down. Which will then be relying on replay officials to determine, putting us right back to where officials can decide the outcome.

Fans are still talking about it because it was an obvious call in favor of a team that has obviously been given favorable officiating for 4 years in the playoffs. The last time the Bills played the Chiefs in the AFCCG, Chris Jones threw a punch to the face of Feliciano (RG) after the play 1 minute into the second quarter while the Bills were leading 9-7 with the ball. That is supposed to be a 15 yard personal foul and an immediate ejection. Not only did Jones remain in the game, no flag was even thrown on the play. That wasn't the only thing in that game that tipped in the Chiefs favor, but Jones was the best player on a defense that wasn't particularly great that year.

I remember the Josh Allen throwing a forward lateral on their first drive in the 2023 Divisional game last year on a 3rd and 17 about one minute into the game. KC's market size is irrelevant. Bottom line is this: Swift brings ratings. With all these new eyes on Kelce and KC, a show has to be put on, after all how fun would it be for swifties if KC was getting knocked out of the postseason every year by Baltimore, Cincinnati or Buffalo? Can't forget the legalization of sports betting definitely playing a role in all this and the value of a "golden boy" and dominant team (great for marketing). Either way you slice it, there's too much money to be made for the NFL and refs to not directly get involved in the outcomes of these games. Chiefs score on a pick 6? you CAN NOT SAY that cost them the game period we will never know Chiefs may have stopped them on 4 downs and got the ball- just like screaming about them giving Worthy the reception on the ball that hit the ground at end of first half..... if they had ruled that incomplete, the Chiefs( with the holding call lingering) would have had 1st and 10 on the 20 with 3 minutes to play in the half, KC could have run the ball, killed the clock and either kicked a FG or scored a TD that would have made it 17-10 or 21-10 INSTEAD of the actual 21-16 it ended up being because the Chiefs scoring quickly from the 2 left the Bills enough time to drive the field and score a TD, so that call HELPED the Bills!! so you see how ridiculous it is to say" that cost them the game" on a stupid or bad call??!! - it can actually help instead of hurt you...

I disagree. The biggest play in the game was in the 1st half, where the Referees did a masterful PsyOP against the Bills that even to this day nobody is talking about. The Refs call a "off sides" penalty on the Chiefs special teams and then the Referees forced the Bills to accept the call penalty (and take points off the score board) and go for 2 pt conversion, which the Bills fail to convert. Thus, forcing the Bills to constantly chase points and at times be over aggressive in their play calling. Masterfully done, Ed Hochuli, masterfully done.

Gotta agree with Eisen. With all the gambling involved, the league would be destroyed if there was an actual fix because that would require everyone from Goodell to refs to owners to coaches to players on every team to be in on it. And if that's the case, even the low level employees would eventually learn about it. Someone would talk. And once that happened, the tons of crap to hit the fan would bury the league and end it.

I agree with the broad point but Occam’s Razor fails more as you approach a complex system. Like a game with an encyclopedic rule book and is still heavily subjective on human being with plain eyes making calls from 80 feet away. There is no grand conspiracy but given enough samples of what are other wise calls that can go for one of two teams and it HEAVILY goes the way of a single team you’re uncovering a problem. Willful (which I don’t believe it is, humans are massively imperfect and frequently do things subconsciously) if I have this 50:50 chance and I flip the coin and it comes up heads, it has the same 50:50 chance the following flip. Streak will likely develop but given enough sample size (which is restricted in this sport so we unfortunately have to extrapolate some) and you see the coin come up heads 60% of the time (which is actually a massive aberration implying nowhere near a true 50:50 chance) then you might start to investigate issues in how the coin is flipped, wether is balanced properly, etc. and right now the data seems to support a call of favoritism (likely not conscientious) toward the Chiefs. Full disclosure, I am a Bill season ticket holder but my opinion was merely hardened from the AFC championship game, not former wholly on it. I felt the Texans game I watched the week prior was informative and various other times I tuned into a Chiefs game through out the season. As well as the numbers ESPN was running the week prior etc, showing how the chiefs are 0/11 now in being called for more penalties than their opponents in the playoffs. Thats… not conclusive but man is it very damning. You yourself pointed out it’s too complex of a game with too many variable for one team to alway beat the odds like that.
