@@cannolidaddy1449 those were roster politics-no one was going to be chanting "we want Darnold" no matter how bad Purdy played, hypothetically. There's very few select situations. When you give up 3 firsts like that, he needs to be a nearly universal guarantee that he his a potential hall of famer coming out of college. The problem is these teams trade all of that for prospective HoFs. The last qb that was honestly good enough and guaranteed success enough to trade 3 1sts for coming out of college was Andrew luck if anyone did it. Unfortunately a said nearly universal as those injuries got him. I would def give up alot of draft picks for Marvin Harrison Jr this draft. He's about as nearly universal guarantee as it gets.

@@cristianschuster9458 Agreed. The problem with burning high draft on a WR, is in my opinion, a WR is not really a game changer. The Vikings have Justin Jefferson. He lost every game he played this year. The Vikes won every game with him injured. Megatron in Detroit with Stafford, was a sorry team for 10 years or so. Drafts are really rough, and tough to get right Im sure. There are very few greats like Mahommes, Brady, Montana, etc. I also believe the team that drafts a qb in the first few, need to have the staff to properly develop said QB. I think alot of teams arent very good at that part. Green Bay consistently has had top notch QBs for Id say 15 years. (From Favre, Rodgers, now Love is looking pretty good)

A lot of these QBs are entering the league at a very young age And the cause & effect of above market salaries for QBs puts added expectations from the front office and fans for the QB to produce during the rookie contract. Plus we also seeing a lot of outliers at the position, Mahomes getting 3 SBs in his first 6 seasons, Burrow reaching the SB in his 2nd full season, not to mention Hurts & Lamar & Allen. The teams are way too needy when it comes to the position, why not be more run centric.

The teams failed the QBs too. Even Jax nearly failed their ‘generational QB’ with bad coaching. The Bears adjusted their offense to fit Justin in the 2nd half of 2022 and he did very well. In the 1st 8 games 2023, they reverted back to what he didn’t do well??? They give another chance to do what he does well and he’s good but then they trade him away for nothing??? That there was no market for him makes no sense. Wish he was backing up Josh Allen. It’s the right system and a cheap hedge against injury but then we already had the previous guy the Bears drafted high and gave up on. In two years, Caleb traded for nothing too? Some teams can develop talent and others are clueless.

I pointed out elsewhere, but Peyton Mannings early career arc is similar. It wouldn't surprise me to see Trevor grow into his role as he plays and becomes that generational player similarly, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he's only as good as we see now which is a good, not great, QB. None of these teams think to draft the best player in the draft- Marvin Harrison Jr instead of taking a qb, even though all of the data shows that most of these top 5 pick qbs don't work out. Teams should not draft a qb to win, they should win with a team and then look for that qb. Look at the bills, ravens and chiefs. Fields problem was he was drafted in a desperation attempt to save Naggy and Paces job. The Bears still having Naggy calling the shots ruined him. By the time Eberflus comes in, you could tell he wanted his own qb to work on Lance hasn’t been given a legit chance because of how tied San Fran was to Jimmy G and when he is finally given the reigns, he gets injured. If it wasn’t Purdy, Lance would still be in San Fran. Zac Wilson came of as entitled and spoiled when they lost to the Pats in 22. Throw in the worse Oline and getting benched for not only Rodgers but Trevor Simeon as well. And while Mac had the lowest ceiling, he also had the highest floor. Coming off a year where he was 2nd in OROY votes is nothing to scoff at. The Patriots failed him by letting McDaniels walk and replacing him with Judge and Patrica as offensive assistants. Then when they fixed the OC spot by hiring OBrien, they didn’t build around Mac, gave him a bottom tier Oline at the start of the season and replaced Meyers with a injured Juju as the WR1. Had Belicheck or the Krafts actually spent their money in the 23 preseason and gotten DHop and kept Meyers, I’m confident Mac would still be a Patriot.

You know who also came out of college with that exact question mark? 2021 NFL Draft 1st Overall Pick Trevor Lawrence, who has been not much more than a good player - a far, far cry from the generational talent he supposedly was.

The Packers draft their next QB years ahead of time and sit him. The Seahawks went with their journeyman backup. The Niners are using Mr. Irrelevant. But teams seem to ignore these success stories. I think the problem with QB draft busts is that teams are reaching in the draft because the feeling is that you need a good QB to win. It's the same desperation that gets an obvious dud like Daniel Jones a big extension. We're talking about the possibility of 4, 5 or 6 QBs in a row going at the start of this draft. Now are these truly strong prospects or are these teams merely going for the best QB prospect that falls to them? This seems to be the extreme example of drafting for need instead of drafting the best player available. In theory, need should only be your tie-breaker between two comparably strong prospects, or it should indicate that you should trade down if the best players available are all in positions you have filled. If the fourth QB in the draft is not truly an exceptional prospect does it make sense to go with them if you can get a "sure thing" in another position? If the strategy is just to take the next QB on the mock drafts then what do you need scouts for? I could do that. I'll go back to the Seahawks as an example. Before Geno Smith, Russell Wilson has the QB and he was a third rounder. Matt Hasselbeck was the long time starter before that and he was a backup they traded for. They've had one year of QB purgatory (2011) since 2001 without taking a QB in the first round and this covers across multiple coaches and GMs. So why do so many teams go with the "take the least bad QB still available" strategy?

Fields would still be bears starter if panthers weren’t so bad that the bears had a number one pick. I don’t think Caleb will be better than fields, Caleb stinks of a dude who already has the bag, underperforms against good teams, his teammates didn’t like him. Dude has strong scent of a bust.

@dodu8281 quoted "most qbs don't fail by their own" That nails it concerning Mac Jones! At the very least, he was ruined by mishandling, and at most, potentially ruined purposely by a vindictive HC. IMO, Belichick is a hypocrite. Belichick expects EVERYONE ELSE to be accountable and team driven so, WHY ISN'T HE??!! I put the blame squarely on COACHING for the decline of Mac. Let's not forget Mac's success the first season: Made Playoffs @ 10-7 and pro-bowl alternate: That doesn't happen by accident in the NFL! Next season he loses a great OC, replaced by a couple meathead yes men, with NO Offensive credibility!... Couple that with head scratching uncomplimentary offensive schemes and gameplans. Add the HC undermining Mac's confidence by benching him after ONE interception in a game! W*F!! What other coach would bench the starter after ONE interception early in a game??!! Answer: NONE!! 3rd year under "sink or swim" duress with another questionable meathead OC, more inexplicable schemes/gameplans, and an uncommunicative dis-engaged HC!! Recipe for failure ONLY! Was Mac Jones at all responsible for his decline? The answer is: MINIMALLY! Yes, he is high strung and impatient. Yes, he lost the team by calling out teammates for perceived failures. Yes he was guilty of being a young immature player who was understandably frustrated in dealing with an UNTENABLE situation!! I wish the best of success to Mac and my personal apology. I am embarrassed by what my team did to him. He should have had a 4th Pats year with a legit chance to thrive… It's pretty clear now that Belichick is a brilliant Narcissist. He's the best defensive mind the game has ever seen, but he has NO respect for offense and offensive players, and NO respect for the Owner that employs him. He has repeatedly undermined what was best for the team while claiming otherwise. Sitting Malcolm Butler in SB 52 threw ALL Players under the Bus! How was that best for the TEAM! It's the HC duty to CREATE an atmosphere of success for the chosen QB! Ruining the starting QB consciously or unconsciously because he wasn't "your guy" is Textbook NARCISSISM! Belichick may have cut his football teeth under Navy Athletics, and he may THINK he runs a team modeled on the military way, but he FORGOT that EVERY serviceman swears an oath and is accountable to a higher authority. The Admiral or General, may not agree with or even respect The President, but it's their duty to their country to follow his orders and to NEVER undermine the MEN under their command. Belichick should never again be trusted with the HC position. He's borderline megalomaniacal, and a cancer in any position of authority. I would hire him as a DC with very minimal authority only. IMO, players were willing to endure the "Belichick Way" because TB12 ensured a legitimate SB shot year after year. Yes the defenses were equally important to the repeated success, but The GOAT was the GLUE that held it all together. When the glue dissolved, it unsurprisingly fell apart.

Justin Fields is still an unfinished product and he still has a chance to succeed in this league. He is unbelievably athletically gifted and just has to improve on ball security pocket presence and reading the field better. He can only get better in Pittsburgh in my opinion

Fields still has a tremendous opportunity. He was in a terrible situation and showed progress. He’s certainly the most physically talented of the class. Again, emphasis on physically. He just may be the most physically gifted in the entire NFL, just needs to the opportunity in a good place like Pittsburgh. Chicago failed him miserably but of course he has some things to work on as well but he’s definitely in a place that will allow him to flourish when given the opportunity.

An actual bust means the PARTNERSHIP didn't work out. Casuals and media use it as a term to say a player can't play and that's rarely the case. More likely than not a player doesn't have the drive or discipline to get better and overcome adversity or the team had no plan to help develop the player. Rarely is it a skill issue.
