In interview videos I learned that a Gus spinoff was actually an option along with Saul Goodman. It ended up going to Saul because the writers enjoyed Bob so much and wanted to go deeper into that character. Giancarlo jokingly said he was sad Saul got the spinoff and really wanted it to be for Gus to expand on the role even more, but he gets to do it anyway in the new show, so everybody wins really.

What if, after the end of Better Call Saul, they might make a Spinoff for Gus. Probably won't happen, but it's a nice thought. Better Call Saul is, in my opinion, very different from Breaking Bad. @AH - 10ZZ - Stephen Lewis SS (2682) He was just a batshit crazy evil dude with no depth. Let's take your example and search for one where this was done RIGHT. A character who normally appears calm and is extremely rational. He built up an empire like no other and remains completely professional. Now, one time his plans get crossed and he is dealt a huge blow. He is at the maximum point of anger that a person can feel. He feels that the person he detests has won and he can't kill him. And he takes a box cutter and slits his loyal underling's throat instead. He had tried to help his master but overstepped his position. Even in acting so cruelly in his fury, Gus remains the calm and classy character he had been established as.
@gnuling2965 жыл бұрын
@AH - 10ZZ - Stephen Lewis SS (2682) I said Tuco was a boring character. That doesn't mean that the danger factor about him was boring but he is just so bland and generic. Just a violent madman. Anyone, any child could invent this character in three minutes. A character should be MORE than this. This is not about a character being a genius. There are characters that are dumb as a doornail which are still really well designed and interesting. It's about a main character being more than just two character traits (crazy and violent).

I had no idea Giancarlo had such a huge say in the show. That tie straightening piece was phenomenal to his character's death and very much so part of his character's personality. Gus was my favorite character from the show and so well done, making Season 3 my favorite season.

Not just Giancarlo had a huge say... Gilligan allowed the actors a lot of creative freedom, but that's something a producer can do when he is working with such a talented staff.

Giancarlo was absolutely brilliant. Nobody else could have pulled off that role. It was genius. But that's what happened in that series. It was this perfect storm of perfect typecasting of actors with outstanding writing, directing, and production values (including the sound and music)... The detail, the complexity, the research, and the depth of character development was pure gold (this defined many of these actors forever. even the ones that had already experienced successful careers, this was the big one). This level of sophistication hadn't happened previously, and it hasn't happened since. I got rid of my cable TV after the whole thing ended. No need to have it anymore. The show was over.
