Hey, i knew Jeff Rutledge when i was a kid. He coached his son in my little league, and he won a super bowl in the early 90s as back up qb and place kick holder with Washington despite botching a hold on a field goal. I remember him letting all the other dads check out his ring.

I was watching Brett Kollman analyzing Kirk's play and the Falcon's play calling and his take was that Kirk is not moving as he should due to his achilles tendon and the Falcon's play calling is so limited that teams pretty much know what's coming. Also, I was watching another analyzer say that most players that come back from the same type of injury do so after 500+ days of healing and rehab and that Kirk started the season at about 319 days after the surgery. That sounds like to me that if Kirk is going to play like himself again, it won't be till next season. I said that when the Falcons took Penix that it looked like insurance to me and now we need to cash it in. Who knows how the Falcons handle Kirk but don't expect him to be himself till next season if ever. As for Penix, he has his chance to stamp his name as one of the greats but most people drop the ball the first time it's handed to them. I'm excited to see what happens the rest of the way but next season is when I have actual expectation. Welcome to ATL...

While I appreciate Rich's attempts to contextualize this, I think rookie QB making his first career start for a team after week 10 when the team is .500 or below is way too broad. I think if he wants to give his point more emphasis, he should be more specific--what are the stats on left-handed rookie QBs making their first career starts indoors for teams that drafted them with picks 7-9 and which are currently .500 or below, have 2 remaining home games and 1 remaining road games, and have names containing Michael and Penix? I'm not saying he CAN'T lead the Falcons to the playoffs under that set of conditions, but he would be making NFL history if he did. So no pressure.

Insane decision making. You either go all in on Kirk, or draft your rookie and give him reps on that cheap contract. Don’t do both.
@HawgWyldFishing4 күн бұрын
They didn’t go all in on the Kirk deal. They gave him a front loaded contract at a discounted value. That way they could have him as the starter at a great price for as long as he was playing quality football, to give the young guy time to adjust to becoming a true professional, and not have the weight of the world on his shoulders from day 1, and they wouldn’t have to over spend resources to try and draft another QB down the road, when they were going ti be in a worse position to do so. There was never going to be a world that Kirk was going to be worse than Desmond Ridder, though he was beginning to push it very damn close after the last 6 weeks. But now they don’t have to worry about that, they didn’t have to spend multiple years worth of draft capital, Kirk’s deal is easy as hell to move off of, even if that means eating the dead cap, because it was all front loaded. If you think using 1 draft pick to take a good rookie QB was somehow going to change everything for the team, you’d be wrong. I can only imagine what you’d be thinking if they had done a trade similar to the Niners trade for the Trey Lance draft pick. That would change the entire makeup of the team, because it costs multiple years worth of first round picks. It only cost Atlanta 1 draft pick and a discount QB contract value price tag. They made the right decision. In literally every way.

Rich, ur not just the greatest Dad, ur Top Notch Sportscaster. Cousins knows how to make Tons of money. I am a Diehard Vikings fan. To be honest I have never been a Cousins fan. Why? Looking at his winning record against teams with winning records has been dismissal. I don't understand why any pro organization doesn't take that into account. He might be a nice guy and one hell of a salesman to sell himself to organizations. I was happy to see him out of Minnesota. I would love to see Sam Darnold find a new home in Minnesota. I hope the Vikings are able to keep him for a two year contract. Everyone knows what can happen to young highly recruited Quarterbacks. The Vikings have been snake bitten for years. High hopes for Teddy Bridgewater, non contract preseason career ending. If Sam Darnold goes to another organization with high expectations he could struggle again. Let our young franchise Quarterback learn for a year. As everyone knows the NFL is very different than university. But I am just a clinical psychologist so what the hell do I know. Just one fans opinion. Thanks Rich you are a pros pro. Doctor M
