Sean McVay took a page out of Dan Campbell's book from Thursday night and went for it on 4th and 5 from the Bills' 30-yard line with the lead, and up three points. I didn't hear any criticism of that. Nor should there be; it was the right move. Just like Jordan Love was shredding the Lions' defense with under 5 minutes left to go, Josh Allen was shredding the Ram's defense. The right move was not to give it back to the other team and go for it on 4th down. Both Campbell and McVay made the right decision. But Campbell got criticized. Campbell going for it from his own 31 wasn't the right move. However, 4-out-of-5 fourth-down decisions Dan Campbell made resulted in 24 points being scored by the Lions, against one poor fourth-down decision that resulted in 7 points being scored by the Packers. I'll take those odds. Dan Campbell's 4th-down situational football decisions won the Lions the game, which was all that mattered. Like Al Michaels said after the final play: "Ballgame."

NEWSFLASH: NFC against San Fran - Dan's coaching decisions did NOT lose that game. The plays were properly executed. The receivers caught on-target passes - then uncharacteristically dropped them. The net result WAS negative, but the decisions were well-considered. That 3rd quarter against GB: Lions were willing to eat 7 and net more T O P to score again rather than let the Packers eat clock and STILL likely score against that gassed M.A.S.H. unit of a d-line. You might disagree with the strategy, but the decision was well-considered. These decisions are unconventional and outwardly they seem like "gambling" but this is NOT the case. The basic argument seems to be based on hindsight - The fourth down (and short) calls work except when they don't.

Dan Campbell is not reckless. Aggressive, but not reckless. Even the fourth down the Lions didn't convert on their own 31 was a "positive" play. Based on the time left in the second half, a punt could have jeopardized their ability to be in possession of the ball at the end of the game-which was crucial to clinch the win. It was a gamble, but it was also a smart strategy to use the Packers' growing momentum against them to lose the time of possession stat. Give the opponent an advantageous position to score that will not waste time, and in return, it securely provides the Lions with the advantage of at least 2 more possessions before the 2-minute warning. A punt to force a full-field drive would simply eat up too much time, and Dan wasn't giving them that either. It was a strategy bigger and smarter than just trying to keep their banged-up defense off the field. Dan Campbell playing 4D Chess.

@@pokewack Sam is a top 5 qb this year. Agreed? Isn’t that the ultimate goal is to have a top qb that’s worthy of the money? Sam is still young, he’s been through lows and adversity, he’s got a huge arm, and is very mobile. We see what he can be. $60m is crazy money no matter what, but if Sam can be good enough to overcome some roster deficits then it is what it is. JJ McCarthy is even younger but he’s a question mark still. Keep both

I think it matters to him more than most qb’s because of that.

At some point, you are your record and sample size has to start mattering. The Chiefs being this "lucky" seems almost statistically impossible. Perhaps they're merely a really good team that plays disciplined, well-coached, opportunistic football, but lack the weapons and explosiveness to finish off teams that have no business hanging around them for all four quarters. They're like a 90's Honda. Workhorse of a car with a history of reliability, that doesn't hold a candle to an Italian Sports car in the quarter-mile, but isn't going to break down even a half as often. At this point, it feels like detractors are grasping at straws. They so desperately want the team with a quarterback throwing for gaudy numbers week in and week out to be the best team in the league, but that's just not how it works anymore -- Patrick Mahomes is 12-1 and Joe Burrow is 4-8. The meta-game of the NFL has shifted towards building more balanced teams again. People should be ecstatic, because it means you can win meaningful football games with Sam Darnold or Jared Goff instead of needing 2022 Mahomes, 2023 Lamar, or 2024 Allen or Burrow.

Re dan Campbell. viking fan here. I've watched the Lions with pity for over 3 decades. The fact that they have a John Madden identity is so much more cool than a super bowl here or there. Transforming it into a a franchise that will attract a certain type of player and fan is a much better long term direction than a mere superbowl. This franchise has suffered for decades. Let them be epic. It's so fricken awesome to fear them in the division.

@@BoHorn the definition of overreact is an unjustifiable reaction to a situation. A Packers fan, whose team is 9-4 and lost to the 1 seed in the NFC by 3 pts, is justified in thinking his team can win the Super Bowl. The problem with analytics is it doesn't take momentum and morale into account when going for it fails. The fact most are going to overlook in the Vikes Falcons game is that the Falcons had everything going for them until they went for it on 4th and failed, the Vikes went on the score the next 14 points and never trailed again. While they probably would have lost, that turn over on downs marked the point the game went downhill.

I know it doesn't matter in the result, but I'm leery of 1) writing off Cousins, 2) anointing Darnold as the starter for the next 3 years and 3) assuming that this isn't part of KOC's overall plan. Before the season started, there were oft heated debates about this exact scenario: What if Darnold played so well and the Vikings did so well that they had to seriously think about keeping him around. Well, here it is!

Outside of Mahomes, no starting quarterback drafted after 2012 has won a Superbowl!! I don't understand the obsession with picking an unproven rookie over a veteran who is leading you to a 10-2 start. QBs in their first contract are not winning jack squat for over a decade already. Just ignore the last decade plus of drafted QBs and pretend yours is magical? Nah sign the still young Darnold to a 4 year $200 million deal. Also for the haters: Dude was on the 2 worst franchise in the league: Jets (14 year playoff drought) and the Panthers, now he's on a good team and getting results.
@user-pc7xq6dz2i3 күн бұрын
Ok cute stat but the profile of QBs who did win those SBs other than Nick Foles is not “resurgent veteran journeyman.” Brady, Manning, Wilson, and Stafford are/were franchise QBs. If you’re trying to argue that a Sam Darnold prototype is the answer while citing historical trends, that’s a losing argument. There’s no more precedent for that than there is for young guys in rookie deals winning championships. Practically the only proven way to do it is to draft or luck into signing a star QB. And the only viable and semi-dependable way to get one is to try drafting one.
