If SMU gets completely knocked out of the playoff with a loss to Clemson, it would set a horrible precedent of punishing teams that play that extra championship game. Opens the argument of “why play an extra game if we are already in the playoff?” If SMU loses a competitive game this weekend, they should still be in at 11, and knock Bama out.

Even with a loss to Clemson in the champ game, they’re still more impressive than Alabama. They’re playing for the opportunity to land a first round bye, not playing for a chance to get in to the playoffs. So what, they and their stellar season get rewarded with a chance at an ACC title game but then suddenly get completely pushed out from the field entirely because they didn’t win it? At 11-2? I can’t get down with that lol

bama has beat the number 1 team in the country (georgia) twice in the last year the second time after they got a new head coach no one has a tiebreaker over them its pretty easy to put them in they may play down to their competition this year vs bad teams but that first half vs Georgia 30-7 before they let their foot off the gas and the blowout vs lsu and head to head vs sc shows they are the better team and have a history of being so.

Making a 4 team playoff bracket in a way is a lot easier since there's really only about that many teams with truly stellar records. But when you get down to a 12 team bracket there is far more teams that can make a case for being able to make a case for being the #12 team in the country.

I say this while acknowledging that the Notre Dame loss was a very bad look: Army could beat Tulane and Navy, be the AAC champion at 12-1, and not receive a bid to the CFP. How does that make any sense?

The committee has contradicted itself several times. They said SOS matters, but obviously that's not the case. Then they said head to head mattered, but when both BYU and SMU had one loss, they had SMU over BYU. The next thing they're going to flip on is teams supposedly not being punished for making their conference championship.

I miss the days when bowl games were the big deal. I remember when College Football ended on Jan 1st with the Orange Bowl, then either the Cotton Bowl, then the Sugar Bowl and ending with the Grand Daddy of them all- The Rose Bowl. College conferences shouldn't have divisions. Best 2 records play for Conf Champ. Clemson at 9-3 shouldn't get a 2,3,4 seed because of ACC champ. Also, use NFL bracketing. 1 seed gets worst 1st Rd winner, etc. March Madness bracket makes no sense in football.

Since there are too many teams to play a balanced schedule and have playoff spots awarded by record and an objective set of tie breakers, any college football playoff was always going to be just as arbitrary and corrupt as the BCS ever was. The people who thought that a playoff was going to improve college football or make it less subjective never really understood college football or how playoffs work. I understand not wanting to punish teams that play an extra week, but I hate the argument of we can't factor this week into the equation when looking at matchups like how strength of records stack up. Why not? We already compare results from week four when ranking teams in week 8, and we look at how one team played another in week five versus how they played a different team in week six. I went and saw ISU vs Utah in person and ISU barely scrapped out a 31-28 win against a team who was on their 4th backup QB. The only player I thought was special was Jayden Higgins, he legitimately was mossing guys on the field. Was not impressed by anyone else on the offense or defense. Special teams was an issue all night long as well for ISU.

Here’s the thing: Miami should be ahead of Alabama. Neither team is going to their conference championship game. And if you wanna make the argument that Miami lost to games in conference, the same as for Alabama. All three of Alabama‘s losses are from SEC teams.and two of those teams don’t have amazing records. But the rest of their schedule is weak. Back 15 years ago when the MWC had BYU, TCU, and Utah at the top, that was competition that would rival most major conferences. But it was the Wyomings and Colorado States and San Diego States that always held the top teams back from greater consideration. UNLV is… fine… but the rest of the league just doesn’t have the competition. It really is a one-team league, so BSU’S SOS will never catch up, no matter how high quality their out-of-conference schedule is.

College hockey uses a straight computer system that works pretty well, but there are only about 60 teams, so a lot more common opponents, and a lot more games, so more data to go on. I don’t know if that would work in football.

This what was always going to happen: It's a feature, not a bug of the CFP system. I think there are two or three teams that have been unlucky but all respect to the committees decisions. They made a similar tough decision last year with Florida and were proven correct. Few can argue that SEC is the strongest conference but it’s great to have Cinderella stories such as Boise and Indiana. However they will find it very tough to progress.

I think the only way that Alabama would get taken out is if Clemson beats SMU and then SMU gets that last spot. If the only two losses for SMU were a nonconference opponent in BYU and the conference championship game there’s no reason you would keep out SMU. if you did then, it would be seen by people as favoritism. SMU up to this point has not lost a game in the ACC this season. Alabama Lost three games in their own conference.

Idk why people are shocked Miami is sitting at home, they had an extremely easy schedule and played 0 ranked teams.. only SEC team they played was Florida and they weren’t supposed to win 6 games this year and they were horrendous first half of the season when Miami played them. They barely beat VT at home, had to have a miraculous comeback against Cal.. like those are teams they’re supposed to be winning by 3+ possessions. They played close games all year with bad teams and I said they’d lose eventually from it and the 6th ranked ACC team got them.. Bama has 3 wins vs ranked opponents including beating #2 ranked Georgia. This wasn’t even a discussion who had the better resume

Georgia wouldn't get knocked out because they're playing a higher ranked team. If a playoff-level team is playing in a championship game against someone who is ranked lower than them, and outside of the playoffs, then that team can, potentially, drop all the way out.

Notre Dame always gets a bye because they don’t have a conference championship game to play. Imagine being Oregon or Penn State who have to play conference championship and then don’t get a bye if they lose

I will say the quiet part out loud; college football will never have a “fair” or uncontested champion or playoff format because you cannot have over 200 teams competing for 1 trophy. Until CFB establishes a system where only “X” number of teams compete for the national championship, this time of year will be inundated with whining, complaining, and over complicating a simple solution. My 2 cents.
