I've had the Deadwood movie saved for years, but wasn't going to watch it until re-watching the show (for the first time since it aired, it's been so long, I'd forgotten much). It knocks the modern 'prestige' shows out of the water. So often with recent shows I'm baffled at why people act the way they are, sometimes which side they're on, what their motivations are, and of course the tedious habit of giving each and every backstory a tragic backstory (the problem being they make them EXPLICIT instead of implicit). Watching Deadwood, it's incredible that so much is implied or hinted/alluded, there's a respect for the audience that's missing so often now. It says a lot that Deadwood can throw dialog at us so complex that often you don't even know exactly what is being said, but you're never confused as to why a given character does what they do. Try watching 'wheel of time' or 'the witcher' and say as much, or, god forbid, the execrable 'game of thrones'. Oh great, more banal dialog where people sit & talk like a bunch of account managers in a second hand car dealership. Yawn. Flipping great to finally be able to rewatch the show, knowing there's a movie at the end that doesn't leave us hanging. Bravo Mr. Milch, and damnation upon the HBO galaxy brains who canned this.

Well put. Although the movie didn't have nearly enough time to do the old show justice in any way. That just wasn't possible in only 105 minutes. Even for Milch 🙁

I fu*king love Dillahunt. And so do you. Fun fact: Olyphant is a third cousin, once removed, of journalist Anderson Cooper, a second cousin, twice removed, of Anderson's mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and a fourth cousin of filmmaker James Vanderbilt. Timothy's three times paternal great-grandparents, William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam, were also the two times maternal great-grandparents of Anderson Cooper and the three times paternal great-grandparents of James Vanderbilt.

Deadwood was great at introducing you to a bad guy, then making you like them by putting them at odds with an even badder guy. THEN they give you someone even worse and you side with the last bad guy. So good.

That wasn't an extra, that was the guy played both Walcott and the guy who shot Wild Bill in the back. I am not sure if he was supposed to be the son of one of those characters, but that was the same actor.
