MY 12 year old cousin used to look at my Big brother and Richie with awe..back in the day. WE knew that they were Giants. NOw we moved on to others . Made songs for so many great groups. Bless you Richie

This will always be among Richie's greatest recordings. The verse about a soldier coming down from Dien Bien Phu with silence in his eyes says so much in just a few lines, and I've never forgotten it. RIP to a beautiful human being whose music will live on,

Truly a phenmenal man, song, performance, message. All you need to know about humanity -- "when it came to listening, we listened, but little, if at all "

On another posting of this song, many people commented how they were introduced to Havens through this song being included in the very first K-Tel "hits" album, "Get It On". Amazing that something like K-Tel could widen so many horizons--especially mine. This is still my all time favorite Havens song, and I still treasure that old K-Tel album that I found at a Goodwill...

@charliebates74149 жыл бұрын
Welcome home brother. Richie would not have minded at all. He was singing of the futility of all war, including yours. It just so happened that he saw the First Indochina War (France) turn into the Second Indochina War (US).

Intriguing, it's Gaul on everything I've seen and Gaul is a place (gault is a rock formation) so would make more sense. (Spotify and soundhound also references Gaul.
@11BravoRVN6 жыл бұрын
Gaul is France, hence the reference to Dien Bien Phu, which was the final battle that drove the French out of Vietnam in 1954. We did not learn much from the French defeat.

"Gault" was a spelling error on Havens' album that was never corrected.

#ugottalisten2b4udie ...with scores of tales to tell yet some we knew too well He told of many a nights when the bravest of men would cry knowing that through Satan's earth-bound magic,many more would have to die! A man came down from Sinai mountain with words of truth for us all But when it came to listening, We listened but little if at all. The reference to Dien Bien Phu is to one of the biggest battles in the Vietnam war, where the French vacated the country and the Americans moved in. *mispelled "Minstral From Gault" on www.discogs.com/Various-Do-It-Now-20-Giant-Hits/release/461587
