I'm a kiwi and McCaw was completely overrated as a player. Good captain, good player by global standards but an average All Black. Not even sure I'd consider him to be the best kiwi backrower when compared to Kaino and Read, let alone the best player of all time. He has wonderful accolades such as win rates, cap records, player of the year awards...but most of that stuff is just because he was apart of a phenomenal team. He played his entire career on phenomenal teams. I rate Sam Cane above McCaw tbh

@@nzfreeski you can't really compare the two. Totally different eras and skill sets, not to mention positions and in-game roles. I think my admiration for McCaw is evident from the original comment above but to suggest that its ridiculous to say that Williams was arguably better or that he should be considered in the same conversation, is willfully ignorant parochial nonsense. The truth is that there is no "goat", but many great players from many great countries who played the game throughout various eras. It's what makes rugby timelessly brilliant. As an Irish man, and from the home of rugby, being Limerick. I rate McCaw as one of the very best players of his position. The guy never seemed happy, always thinking ahead. A burning ambition to battle on. I guess he viewed every game as a battle. And every opponent as an enemy. He is a starter in the best ever rugby team. Along with Brian O'Driscoll

This is probably the first tribute to McCaw I've seen that actually shows off his exceptional skills at the breakdown. That's half of what makes him a great player!- his ability to turnover balls! Nice work on the video
@rugbylife231810 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike. :) I agree with you and i find interesting how he often turns the ball over by stealing it, instead of making a more "traditional" turnover (standing over the ball etc).

phenomenal player, two things about him stand out to me. First was his workrate, game in game out his stats were on another planet compared to what other open sides were doing in terms of carrries, tackles, rucks hit. Not the fastest or the strongest he just had this huge gas tank and was always at 100%. Next was his ability to adapt his game over his long career, he started out fast and dynamic and scored a lot of tries but as he got older, the game changed, the breakdown rules changed. the Players around him got younger he adapted and evolved his game not just to stay relevant but to stay the best.
@mruv59443 жыл бұрын
He had complete understanding of the tackle, breakdown and support play. Then you factor in his heart and leadership which is what truly makes him the GOAT.
@harrymelad9422 жыл бұрын
I watch this video from time to time and always marvel at this man. I am English, 54 years old, an ex player and 7 and I can honestly say that in my humble opinion he is the best I have seen so far in my lifetime. Despite possibly not being the biggest or fastest, he was big enough and had a massive engine; and his perseverance (the kick at goal chase down is a prime example), awareness, selflessness, determination, will to will, rugby brain and calmness under pressure just made him the greatest. The OED needs a new definition for the word ubiquitous: it should just say, Richard Huw McCaw.

One thing I've noticed is McCaw's tackling technique was quite "judo-esque" - using the ball carriers' momentum rather than fighting against it. There are exceptions of course, but you didn't often see him smashing blokes backwards, it was more usually the case that he'd wrap the player up and pull him down a metre or two beyond the initial collision. Whereas that might sound like a negative point, it's actually extremely effective because it's much easier for McCaw's defending team to get the ruck and clear out; the attacking team's support players have to step over or around McCaw, even if it is technically incumbent on him to roll away. The other point here is that I reckon by not making "bigger" hits, he was able to avoid getting injured too badly. Probably a big factor in how he able to represent New Zealand 3,000 times or whatever.
@russellquandt40505 жыл бұрын
Rugby is a finesse game, and the best rugby players finesse the tackle. Of course, there is always a time and place for the brawn
@MrT675 жыл бұрын
That technique allowed him to get to his feet quicker to contest the ball. It was unfair occasionally that he would get penalised, just because he was so quick at the breakdown and officials/ opponents and spectators would presume he had cheated. Occasionally he would get his timing wrong, but most of the time he was legal.
