In a technical sense, I would agree that it was all downhill after Close to the Edge. But when "downhill" means making albums like Topographic Oceans, Relayer, and Going for the One, maybe it was worth sticking around. 🙂 But I'm glad Bill left when he did; otherwise we wouldn't have had him playing on those classic King Crimson albums.

This is like a history lesson. It can be argued that the Close to the Edge album is one of the top progressive rock albums of all time. I have listened to it hundreds of times. Somehow, in this intimate setting, you have recreated history for us Yes fans, and as I wipe my eyes, I can just type thank you. To quote me: "Band Geeks are to Yes, as Brit Floyd & The Australian Pink Floyd are to You-Know-Who." The first time I tuned in to this, I thought, "Uh-huh...another Yes tribute band." 😂 18 minutes later, I was picking my lower jaw up off the floor. How fortuitous, for all of us, that this group of SUPREMELY-gifted musicians managed to find each other. I then rushed to pull up all their other Yes covers, and at the end of that journey, I felt like I'd been to Heaven & back. My Favorite Band Of All Time, FINALLY, in this age of Tribute Bands, being given the gift of ultimate coverage...in a way no other band has EVER DONE. My next thought was, "Holy God in Heaven...would it not be the Ultimate Cool if Jon were to hear these demigods, be as blown away by them as we have...and maybe give them a call about taking them out on tour with him???" Imagine my surprise... Jon said--he actually said!-"we'll try this for a few weeks & see how it goes." I think he was keeping his excitement in check by not mentioning how this tour is sure to go over like GANGBUSTERS...how there will be standing ovations all through the performances...how all of us Boomers who SCREAMED for Yes in the 70s will be doing that all over again at these shows!!! Yeah, Jon.....PLAN on this going on for more than "a few weeks." If my instincts serve me correctly, you guys are about to find out that your respective ships have come in..... BIG time. I cannot miss this tour.

I watched Band Geeks with Jon Anderson back to back with the latest current Yes live offering…. And Band Geeks ruled supreme! The Yes lineup falls flat compared to these guys…particularly Billy Sherwoods tone and delivery… despite his technical ability, he sounds far too mundane and lacks the necessary EDGE to be an “interesting” substitute for Chris Squire And Anderson is, well….Anderson. But these band geeks…almost sounds like they know what they’re doing😮😊lol

My first drummer turned me on to Yes properly, though I'd already been exposed to and familiar with a small number of their songs by then. The more we listened to, the more I became convinced that the sum total of the band is the greatest musical talent in the history of history. I rate John Entwistle the GOAT on bass guitar, but Chris Squire was perfect for Yes. They've always been all killer, no filler (but maybe came close to less grand around the 90125 and Big Generator era), and I couldn't be more pleased to have seen them in concert a few times, especially in Oakland, CA, during their Union tour 😀

The lyrics are to some extent based on Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi." Now, are there things in that book which don't make any sense? Absolutely! Nevertheless, like Herodotus's "history," which is also filled with main stories that defy belief (vs. Thucydides's factually-based one), Yogananda's "autobio" is fascinating if viewed through a lens of reality, fantasy and imagination.

Ivor, you've stated my long-winded raving about this in 2 complete sentences. Cannot wait to experience this in concert. It was sad enough to see CSNY destroy themselves with their massive cases of Terminal Ego-itis. It's even sadder, as prog fanatics, to see Jon & Steve doing the same thing. Jon & Vangelis was quite painful to watch as well. How tragic that musicians become so consumed by their art that their relationships with their friends/collaborators cause them to forget that TIME IS SHORT, and can end our lives in a microsecond.
@ivorcarroll8709
@ivorcarroll8709 Жыл бұрын
@@oliaslives6986 y You are so right, Doug. The only thing I have to say (that's worth saying) is that bitter recriminations apart. Yes stopped being Yes, a unique and inspired music machine, when Jon Anderson was booted. I take no sides but it was Jon who provided the admittedly often deranged creative notions that made Yes stand out for so long. Without Jon what remained was a bunch of talented musicians with nary an inspiration between them. But they'll never steal the back-catalogue of sonic excellence from us, and if they ever tried we could still turn en masse to The Band Geeks and know that we have a home.

@@bodhisattva3774 didn't know that, I saw him on video several times and each time he played it differently, and actually that's what always bothered me, do the famous guitarists repeat their solos on gigs or prefer just to improvise. Zappa openly admitted that he always improvises and prefers to create something new during the live performance, and that's what makes it unique .But of course Howe is capable of playing his own solo, and geeks did amazing job on that too: )

But I want to thank them for their way of being, showing themselves and letting us know their many skills. You will not assume from any curator of the network aspiring music or network stars, not built videos in search of aesthetic sense every aspect, far from it, you are wonderfully simple, far from the form of carelessness! The drummer or singer sipping a drink during the performance is an example of this and the atmosphere of your performances. Thank you very much for what you do and for being part of that small minority that, in the mare magnum of the web, has full merit of being there !!

Ever noticed the cover art to this album? With floating islands and waterfalls flowing over the edge? Back in the 70s when I was lying in my dorm room making the entire floor listen to the album with me, I always imagined that first section, your first 2 minutes and 30 seconds, that incredibly discordant jazz infused rock that no one else ever seemed to learn how to play except for y'all, was the sound of water rushing over rocks... getting closer to the edge... And then at your 2 minute and 30 second mark, the river breaks free and flows so harmonically over the edge into a waterfall... That vision has stayed with me for the last 48 years. Great job guys!! I just floated over the edge... 👏👏👏
