In a sport that usually progresses technically, it has been over 20 years since Midori Ito did her triple axels. No one else has come close in consistency or rotation. And the height she gets on those jumps seems super-human. She didn't need a bunch of gold medals to become a legend.
I love Midori!!! I wish the compulsory figures were thrown out much earlier during her skating career. Should would have had so many more world and Olympic medals. She is so special! There will never be anyone like her.

People don't understand that there is true artistry in her jumping. How the knee reacts to the landings, the height, the speed, or lack thereof, of rotation. This is all art. You just have to compare it to Harding to see someone whose jumps are just jumps. Yes, she was fast, jumped high, but she was all over the place in the air and landed with a thud almost every time. I think Ito was by far the greatest figure skater (not just female) of all time. I can't think of any other skater who could land a double axel and go right into a spin off of the other foot. Pure genius.
@theninjacat72006 жыл бұрын
Midori Ito was cuter than a button but she did not have the complete skater's body. Her legs were solid (as the years went on, she started to look like a linebacker - not slender. She did power jumps with accuracy - more accurate than Tonya Harding - but neither skater brought full artistry to competitions.
@jondavwal136 жыл бұрын
I would just say again that you have a very limited view of what artistry is in skating. It's like the talk about Carolina Kostner and her amazing artistry. She skates like a skinny hippo but she flails are arms a lot. And the Russians are too skinny and have absolutely no athleticism in their skating. We are supposed to care that they put their hands up in the air when they jump. It's just a gimmick. It's not art. To me they are incomplete. Midori's athletic ability and reckless abandon was breathtaking. That was her artistry and her genius.
@lsrasr1586 жыл бұрын
I read that when Christopher Dean was doing the commentary for australian tv during the 1988 Calgary Olympics he said of Midori's LP that her artistry was the skating itself. In the same commentary, Dean predicted that Midori would be the 1st woman to land a triple axel in competition. Regarding artistry, I read that artistry during Midori's time was meant to be arm movements and musical interpretation. When it was later changed to presentation. it was meant to be ice coverage, speed and general skating quality. Back in her day, Midori would have strong presentation marks.
@alexsdb97124 жыл бұрын
The huge error by the skating people, including the media, was going focusing solely on her jumps, which was expected. However, they then labelled her as an athletic skater. That was false. Ito was the complete package. The huge jumps were there, but there was always strong interpretation to the music, everything well thought of, even to all of her choices in music selection which was always great classical pieces. She had a lot of transitions, not just moving from jump to jump, and Ito had lots of edgework reflecting the figures she was trained in. Her interpretative moves on the ice were also not cliché or the typical, and this goes for her placements and directions on the ice. Ito was clearly very musical and a sensitive figure skater who simply loved her sport, and it showed.
@no-hl4sv2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for saying that!! As a huge fan of Midori, I have been annoyed by people saying she is a strong jumper/an athletic skater but lack of artistry. All of her jumps match the music, and transitions between the elements are all exquisite. Her skating is an art, including her jumping technique.
She succeeded 2A in 2018 Adult Figure Skating competition(warm up) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jF69l6lnptOcfrc Trying 2A and 2A-2T in 2019 (but failed) 2020 she is 51 years old. she is legend!
It has been 29 years since Midori Ito retired. No more jumpers than her have appeared yet. Moreover, at the time skate shoes were much heavier than they are today. In sports competitions, are there any other athletes whose records haven't been broken for 29 years?

Only for the 3A and her height? (wich is outstanding I agree, thats what I like about her) I'm sorry but yuna was also a textbook consistent jumper and great on the technical too. Both have qualities but for me yuna is better.

+kev7978 Ito was a great jumper but Yuna has a lot more artistry. Midori was a chearleader on ice, the only thing that was great about her was the jumps... And Ice Skating isn"t only about the jumps ;)

+kev7978 I really don't understand why do you said that since yuna was known as a texbook jumper with a great quality in her jumps, maybe she was not flexible like cohen but in jumps she was very consistent. Comparing Ito's 3a to that of Asada's, Asada's 3A is a joke.
@theninjacat72006 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you're looking for...Midori was cuter than a button and a prototype 3A skater as far as technique. Her execution of the skate was not flawless. It always appeared wobbly. Asada is graceful in her skating while Nagasu is the most elegant of all three ladies. Nagasu is the next evolation - she has speed, the power jump and artistry when landing.
@mkoh87786 жыл бұрын
Mao squeaked her way out of her most of 3A's, barely getting through her final rotations. The only reason why we're talking about Mao is because she was the only person attempting 3A's regularly at the time, which by default, makes her special. And Nagasu doesn't come nowhere close to the consistency of Midori with this jump.

According to her coach, Midori was able to jump from the Day 1. In Japan, some researchers examined her. Midori had three physical advantages: Her extremely short height (she is around 4'09"), the strength of her back (much stronger than an average man) and the proportion of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers (9:1). The last one seemed shocking to the researchers as even Carl Lewis was like 8:2, which was already extremely unusual.

Her technique is incredible. She and Tonya Harding were the only ladies of their time who could jump the way they did, so much power. Now the technique has changed, the focus is leas on height but more on rotational speed and axis stability in the air. Ito and Harding did an interesting kick out to the side and pulled into the axis, rather than up and through with the knee... gave the jumps so much height! So amazing to watch.

Midori Ito was the greatest technician in the history of the sport. Her jumping ability is unrivaled. The only reason she didn't perform quads was because she didn't try. They would easily have come to her. It's a shame she didn't win Olympic gold but she didn't perform in 1992 and Kristi walked through the door. Nobody handed it to her. A lot is made of the comparison to Kim, but Kim is a huge bore albeit more graceful than Ito. When you watch Ito skate you sit at the edge of your seat. I get up to get take a leak when Kim skates. Yamaguchi's Malaguena was far superior to Kim artistically as was everything else she did. It's a shame the two greatest of the era had to skate at the same time.

She did attempt quad, but she broke her ankle. Twice. That's why she stopped trying it. Given the height she could reach I think she would've gotten the rotations but the landing might had been too powerful for her ankle to sustain.
@jondavwal136 жыл бұрын
I think she stopped trying relatively early in her career. I suspect with more mature bones she would have managed. She didn't need it at the time. However, if she did I think she would have outskated anybody for 50 years. A quad lutz wouldn't have been out of the question for her based on the size of her triple.
@kev79786 жыл бұрын
Agreed. She's still technically unparalleled in women's skating. Her athleticism is what catalysed the technicality in women's skating. Without her the women today wouldn't be doing triple-triples or landing 7 triples, let alone attempting a triple axel. And putting any female skater, even Yuna Kim, next to her is plain absurd.
