In this explore, we are back in Dover where we take a look at both the Detached Bastion, and North Center Bastion at the Western Heights of Dover!
The Western Heights are dominated by a massive series of fortifications. Three forts are linked by deep ditches to enclose the hilltop, where soldiers and artillery were positioned to prevent the port falling to a French invasion. The defenses were begun in the 1770's, extended during the Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815), and modernized between 1853 and 1870. They were occupied by the Army until 1961. The bastions saw very little use after their time, with only local defense use during both World Wars.
Big thanks to Shaun and the IKS group for showing us around. Please drop a Like if you enjoy the show!

Great explore, guys. I'm amazed how much Dover still has to offer. It's impressive that they put so much care and attention into the brickwork; even in these tunnels and bunkers there's an element of artistry to the architecture.

Thanks for watching! Dover has tons of stuff to see, we haven’t really seen it all yet. Definitely loved the brick work and the architecture, great to see.

So much of it was demolished irresponsibly by the council over the years, there's a lot less than there was. The only double caponier anywhere in the UK was filled in with asbestos waste. It's tragic. My dad and his friends used to play in the tunnels around the Western Heights.

Thanks 🙏 glad you enjoyed! A couple of the other crew members went off to film something else while we explored the second part of this video, as they’d already done it, and likewise the bit they went to film, we’d already done - so made sense to split off at that point.

Enjoyed seeing you travel through the caves Steve along with thr rest of the crew. The caves seem to go on for miles and miles with steep, steps up and down. The film you got of the shadows travelling through those arches was very impressive. Love to see you and Alex climbing and crawling through tight places and I'm impressed with Ray how he will have a go. Loved the video thanks Steve xxx

Another great explore Steve, nice to see a large group of guys enjoying a trip to the Seaside. The walkway you used to get from one spot to another looked quite cool. I'm going to watch this again on TV, my tablet is having a bit of a quality meltdown. Thanks and keep safe 👍.
