I've seen this thousands of times. I know what he will say before he says it. I know the timing of it. I know the tone. And yet, every time I hear him say that last sentence, I can't help but break from inside. That Sonata at the end just makes me cry each time. Richter, thank you for the music, thank you for the human.

I could only imagine the weight of his overwhelming emotions as he said that final statement and rested his head on his hands, confessing infront of the camera, well Mr Richter if you wanted the world to hear you, to know your sadness, the world of music is listening and will always listen to your music and to all the cries encrypted within every recording of yours.

It pays to remember that we are listening to Slava at the end of his life, with medical issues preventing him from performing (and everything else that comes from being close to the end), he is clearly profoundly depressed. We shouldn't find what he says directly representative of his life or art. I think he was a proud and intense man to whom the piano and music in general gave great joy.

Cette sonate de Schubert est une des plus belles compositions que l’on puisse découvrir. Et avoir le bonheur de tout simplement fermer les yeux, et écouter un tel chef d’œuvre. Notre cher Richter est le seul à nous délivrer toute l’atmosphère écrasante de l’œuvre et plus spécialement ce mouvement. Toutes les critiques se portaient sur la lenteur de l’exécution. Et pourtant..!!! Richter, à l’instar de tous les pianistes est le seul à nous avoir donné la plus belle interprétation de cette sonate. L’entendre, le voir, je remercie la vie d’avoir connu cet homme, ce pianiste d’exception, si attachant sur tous les plans. Aujourd’hui, un nom me vient qui pourrait, et je le pense vraiment, être un égal de Richter. Je n’en connais pas d’autre. J’écoute très souvent mon cher Richter, et ma journée s’en trouve embellie. Very moving. I don’t remember how I came to find out about him. I must’ve been searching though video footage of horowitz and saw a clip. I’d never be the same after hearing him. I’ve never been so dumbfounded. He seemed to always play as if possessed. I’ve seen this doc a couple times. Sometimes I wonder if he ever really knew what he gave to music lovers. That look he gives after his last sentence is crushing.

Not liking himself is arguably a CONSEQUENCE of what he said before: that he finds the things that define Life disturbing. Please read Schopenhauer, Beckett, Thomas Bernhard, and many, many other greats to get a sense of these reactions. It is the "despair" that Lord Russell spoke of. Not of imminent death, no. But according to (the young) Sam Harris (not necessarily playing in the league as the above), "it is Life that is the emergency, not death".

This is not a disaster. This is reality. Richter knew that he was not really able to reach the frontiers, the real limits. Apart the gigantic exception of Schubert. There, he was the greatest of all times.

All that generation of genious musician played concerts during ww2 for troops ,on battlefield .for sure ,knowing the miserable faith of Stalin german's rooted russian victims deported who starved in Goulag ,and beeing used as icons of the worth tyranny of XX's is not easy to swallow ! I met him first after a wonderfull Franz Schubert duet with Fischer Diskau my first year of conservatory ,there was a staff of peacefull ancient resistants at cultural affairs, and again in the 90' for a memorable 3' saint saens concerto . Time changed in my town...he saw some monsters arround me ,frightened:the time had changed: cultural direction with a pederast monster of us nazi drugs' bar owner...with it's techno music and alcoolics who claimed at the time ,that the organizer of red army show was organized by a gay...to reforce their dignity !!!and ...i was not very happy at this time !
