Morty is dispersed in the npcs of the game. Rick is the main character and has played this game before which is why he has awareness that he (the main character) is actually Rick.

The reason Rick still has awareness but Morty doesn't is because of what Rick said at the start; the power went out during the heist and the game put Morty's consciousness into every NPC as a failsafe mode. Rick joined the game after that happened, so it's treating him as if he's just the player.

I mean we see in an earlier season that morty also plays this game as the player character and even then he couldn't understand he was in it till after the game ended I think the actual reason is because rick is just simply a meta gamer or he tweaked it ahead of time so he was self aware one or the other

9:30 The president(NPC) part of morty had a point, deep down Morty doesn't fully trust Rick, which represents that 8% that Morty had left behind...not to mention, when was the last time you have heard Rick say the words, "I love you"?

4:10 I feel like it’s because Rick is just super smart so he can easily retain the fact that he’s in a video game, while morty, for the most part, isn’t that smart. So what I think is his intelligence got split into all of the other characters, and that one piece of it where he is more intelligent and rational than he usually is, is really the only one who can REALLY accept what they all really are for what it actually is, a bunch of pieces of a 14 year old boy in a video game
