Rick Dangerous is a platform game developed by Core Design for the Acorn Archimedes, Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and MS-DOS. The game was released in 1989 and published by Microprose on the Firebird Software label in the UK, and on the MicroPlay label in America. It was also published in Spain by Erbe Software. Later, it was released with two other games, Stunt Car Racer and Microprose Soccer, on the Commodore 64 Powerplay 64 cartridge. The game was followed by a sequel, Rick Dangerous 2, in 1990. Loosely based on the Indiana Jones film franchise, the game received mixed reviews from critics.

@@welshie6313 The game is adapted on Amiga from Atari ST version. It's a straight port of the 16 colors GFX. The sound is slightly different as usual but here nothing really notable. Amiga SFX are clearer of course but music has been composed for soundchip on ST, so adapting it on Amiga using a little trumpet sample is nice but doesn't change much. Barely identical, the two versions are fabulous, because Rick Dangerous is fabulous 😅

@iXien

I already talked about it with Fano who developed this CPC+ versions. I don't really like it. There is two much "demo-ish" style with superfluous scrolltext at start and the infos that are not the same as on the original version on 16 bit systems and take too much place on screen. But the biggest problem is on the GFX department with weird columns and in the gulu's temple or this awful purple background in the pyramids. Some of the traps are even much tedious to master due to mode 0 unproportional pixels, the maps would have required some adjustments to correct these problems. I'm dreaming about a nice CPC version of Rick Dangerous without any GFX modification, just the splashscreen you can see in the CNG Soft compactage version, the musics and hiscore table of the ST/Amiga version, of course the 16 bit complete maps and the mini cutscenes respecting the CPC "old" 26 color palette. How wonderful that would be 😛

Sorry for fanboys but Amiga and ST version are identical in terms of GFX, scrolling, etc. Only sound is a little bit different and can be discussed. SFX are more crystal clear on Amiga of course thanks to Paula. About the music, some love the instruments of the Amiga version while others will prefer the YM soundchip touch of the ST version. Well, it's a detail as it doesn't affect gameplay and atmosphere. IMO these two original versions are lovable as well. No matter if the game doesn't use the Amiga chipset with graphical effects, smooth scrolling, as the pleasure isn't here but in its simple and effective gameplay, and a clever level-design. This is the mark of the best games in history. But good things have been made on 8 bit systems too as this Rick Dangerous is clearly a game between two ages with a gameplay and level-design that smells the good old time of 8 bits computers. PC DOS version (that works more as a 8 bits computer here) is fast with offers GFX near to the original Amiga/ST version, sad that this standard didn't offer more than a speaker at the time. C64 version is really neat, even if the main character look different, mainly due to sprite restrictions. Music is a bit aggressive, I don't really like the SID sound, but it's a very subjective feeling of course. For the rest, all is smooth, very pleasant to play and it's the only 8 bits version that includes the intro sequence with animation of each level. The Spectrum version is interesting too. Color restrictions make some ennemies difficult to see in front of the background and spoil some surprises with for example the moving blocks that are of the same color of the background rather than the map itself but remains very playable. And for the last my personally prefered 8 bit version, on CPC, with its colorful GFX, the main character based on the original one, the main screen that shows the screen on which you died on the previous part. The game is a bit slow but collision detection is ok so it remains perfectecly playable. The only flows for me is the lack of music and intro sequence of the levels, a shame as they are present on Spectrum, a computer using the same CPU and soundchip. A shame that all the 8bits version are truncated from half of each level. If not really impressive technically, Rick Dangerous remains one the best platform games on western computers with its sequel Rick Dangerous 2, thanks to a clever level-design and a perfect playability. It's not too hard, it's just "trial and error". We don't have to play it like a Super Mario Bros game, running as fast as possible in the levels. There is no timer. Rick Dangerous games can be mastered with moving screen by screen, understanding the mechanics and learning traps one by one. I can finish the original 16bit version (with complete level) in less than 25 minutes but I recently saw a speedrun in less than 20 minutes, kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2i4emqwebV9jpI . impressive! Many thanks for the show, it's always a pleasure to see a nice version comparison of the game that made the player I am nowadays! Don't hesitate to make the same with Rick Dangerous 2, for me even better than this one.

1989 PCs were still firmly in the office space. There wasn't such a thing as a home "entertainment" PC yet. Sound cards were available but quite niche. Amazing to think that just a few years later, Wolfenstein 3D with 256 colour blistering fast VGA graphics and full soundblaster / adlib support would be out, and the PC would effectively retire 16 bit computers and consoles. And then the following year .... Doom. Crazy times.

Amiga won! It's a perfect game on the Amiga. The Atari and C64 versions are also great. The DOS version has too little colors (maybe 16, but it looks alike 8), and the sounds are terrible. It's quite poor compared to the PC. (it would be great as an Amstrad version) :) The Amstrad version slows down when there are multiple sprites on the screen. The gfx are worse than on the C64! It's a bit better than the Spectrum version. I don't like the Spectrum's graphics. Rick changes his actual color according to the background. I know about the Spectrum's graphical abilities, but.. I simply don't like this. Despite of that it's a very good game for the Spectrum too, as for the rest. 1. Amiga 2. Atari 3. Commodore 64 4. DOS 5. Amstrad CPC 6. ZX Spectrum

kingofmambo - correct. Core took the cop out / easy option of porting the Atari ST version to the Amiga, not even adding another bitplane of colours to take it upto 32 colours onscreen - it uses the Atari ST's 16 colours. Core did this with a lot of Amiga games - really poor on their part.

@Corporeal Undead Wait, so you spent $$$$ on a PC in the early 90s, then had to buy additional graphics and sound cards just to compete with something that came out in what? 1985? LOL Sierra games on Amiga were poor though. Outrun and Street Fighter as well. I think that's why PC wankers have a superiority complex. They spent a ton of money but almost always had disappointing versions of games with poor graphics and no sound (or beepity boopity internal speaker, woah!). Then Doom came along and they wet their knickers, finally a game for which they could justify the expenditure. "oMgZ gReAtEsT gAmE eVaR!" they shout from the rooftops. Even though it wasn't all that. Then PS1 came out in 1994 and wiped its ass with PC...

@Ezyasnos 2 жыл бұрын
@@Weird.Dreams I don't think back in the day any 'PC wanker' would ever regard the PC to be a better machine than the Amiga. Back in the day if you bought a PC, it was because you needed certain software to run on it, you needed to work on it, you needed to get stuff on floppies to be interchangeable with the systems used at the office. This 'PC wanker' was quite envious for his cousin's Amiga. I used my dad's pc back in the day, which was a nice 386, later upgraded to a 486sx with a sound blaster pro, but never did I think it was the better system, au contraire. It was more suitable, yes, but that's how things were. The Amiga could've destroyed the PC if they had a hi-res monitor option like the Atari ST, had contracts with business software developers, and had some kind of licensing system like the MSX so other manufacturers could design systems with all kind of different markets in mind - for instance, the IBM PC was often praised for it's keyboard, while that isn't particularly system specific, therefore, a computer manufacturer could've designed an Amiga for people who needed to work on it for long hours. Or on the other hand, a game console, or an ultra cheap home computer you name it.
