Rick Dees was a disc jockey in Memphis when he did this song. He had a morning show on WMPS in Memphis. I was in high school and his show was the funniest thing around. He was extremely talented and we had never heard anything like him. He had a million different voices/characters he would do. Elvis was one. The mayor of Memphis at that time was another popular one. Can remember going to school in the mornings and listening to him and not wanting to get out of the car because we were laughing so hard. He came out with this song but it just seemed to be another one of his many hilarious things he was doing, only this one went national. The program director of the radio station told him he could not play his song on the air and he did it anyway and they fired him. He immediately got another job at a competing radio station in town but by now he was nationally famous and he ended up leaving Memphis for L.A. not long after this song came out.

Exactly eight years earlier on September 7th, 1976 "Disco Duck (Part 1)" by Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots was at #26 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, a little over three weeks later on October 10th it would peak at #1 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for almost a half-year {25 weeks}... Rick and the Cast had one other Top 100 record, "Dis-Gorilla (Part 1)", it entered the chart on January 9th, 1977 at position #77, and it remained on the chart for six weeks, peaking at #56... * 'Solid Gold' aired from 1980 to 1988 with 332 original episodes...

THE DISCO DUCK IS A SILLY REALLY FUN NUMBER 1 HIT FROM 1976, A GREAT UNIQUE SONG. THOSE WHO DIS THE DISCO DUCK NEED TO GET A SENSE OF HUMOR, LEARN TO HAVE FUN AND STOP BEING SO SERIOUS. THOSE OF US WITH A BIG SENSE OF HUMOR LOVE COMEDY AND THINGS THAT ARE SILLY, FUNNY AND MAKE US LAUGH. BECAUSE THE LARGELY VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE DO HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR. SILLY FUN SONGS BECOME NUMBER 1 HITS.

It seems about every other year or so, in the 70s, there was a novelty song. '74 Kung Fu Fighting, '76 Disco Duck and '78 King Tut. Right! Steve Martin was totally serious when he recorded King Tut. It reminds me of an episode of Glee. The assignment was to "pick a song with a bad reputation or, I should say, a song with a reputation of being bad." I do admit that there are songs that, IMHO, are just idiotic but, I like them anyway.Ummmmm, I guess that's the long way of saying I agree.

They were part of Ruby Flipper at this time. Sue, Patti and Lulu the Blonde. They formed Legs and Co several months later. Danced on TOTP UK for several years. They're actually very good dancers.

Quite a freaky novelty at the time 1976. Very early disco effort. This video was NOT for Dance Fever. The song was unique. The dancing here (?) was amateur and clunky, but not too bad. The end was jumping jack chaos. The gist of this disco duckish song was music can lead to shape-shifting and other magic, etc. on the dance floor. Mini rap effort also by Rick Dees. Thanks, Rick. Vive les disco freaks....
