Thanks Rick - particularly good advise today - being able to control the tension in your fret hand, no matter what you are trying to play, I have recently found to be key to improving many aspects of my playing, particularly when trying to increase my speed. I will take your advise here for the legato as well. Thanks again Rick :-)

I find that what makes legato playing tricky isn't the technique, but the ability to keep the beat going, to maintain the pulse when perform legato licks. Picking really allows us to emphasis the pulse.

Great vid Rick!.. I was wondering if maybe you could go more indepth into how you determine the sequencing as you "float" through the scale when soloing or maybe you could point me in the right direction where I could find a good collection of sequences to play around with.. I've been working at fine tuning my pick hand accuracy/timing to the metrnome a lot lately without any problem but when I try to work with left hand legato I can't seem to get past quarter notes using the standard unsequenced scale patterns.. I can't remember the last max bpm I managed to achieve (I think it was around 110) but I'm only able to hammer-on for ascention & pull-off for descention using quarter notes via scale patterns in their stock numerical "1-7" formula.. I can't seem to figure out how to break out of the box!??..:-D I feel that if I could aquire a garden variety of various scale sequences that I could memorize it would help lend a more structured left hand approach for legato practice with a metronome.. Any tips, advice or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated as it seems to me that the importance & value of sequencing is seldom (if at all) discussed anywhere on or offline..

Rick, do you usually incorporate that Holdsworth 'all hammers' legato approach or do you mostly still use pull-offs along with sequences and patterns? I'm currently subscribed to the Tom Quayle school of legato but your approach I feel should be able to get me that burst of speed that I want in my solos, for dynamics. Insane stuff by the way, these practice session videos are absolutely brilliant and inspiring as always. Thanks man.

Hey Rick! Awesome playing as always! ;). Any plans on making (as some have requested already) some more in-depth videos on your approach to hammer-ons-only legato playing? When do you chose that style of legato over the common hammer on-pull off technique; is it just the sound? I remember seeing a video of you talking about it but I couldn't find it (maybe it was on InfiniteGuitar?). It would be greatly appriaciated, as there aren't really any thorough videos of it, that I could find atleast.

@guitars35710 жыл бұрын
You pretty much named the benefits right there lol there's usually less friction as well when compared to most other trems such as the ibanez edge stuff (although I have an edge III on one of my guitars and I've never had a problem after 4-5 years)

What am i doing wrong then, if i play with no tension i find it difficult to get the notes to sound out loud and clear aka the attack, so i have to hit down and pull off with a bit of effort, but then doing so i feel the burn in my arm from the tension....how the heck do you play loosely but also get the attack on the notes as well...this is what i could never understand, and no one has really explained. Speeding up also seems to cause tension even if i use the same technique which I don't understand either.
@timokomulainen10 жыл бұрын
The reason you tense up is, you have not learned the technique ground-up. Your hands lack the ability of doing all the little, essential movements accurately and tense up as the result. Try doing a relaxed, slow hammer-on. I am sure you are able to do it. Now, progress from that point on, upping tempo only as your ability to cope with it increases.

Everytime I do this kind of exercising, I get a cramp in my left hand and left forearm after a while... (I´m right handed so it´s my playing hand/neckhand) Is this normal? I do this exercising for about a week now. I also got very painfull muscle soreness in the first 2 days. Will all the pain and cramps reduce by just keep practising or am I doing anything wrong?
