Rick rules! I too am 70 and recall all the same things, but I also remember an econ professor in college who said that most of the real wealth is made from real things. He then went on to explain the elasticity of silver as an example. Essentially it is both a base and precious metal that is in both industrial and in investment demand, but the supply is certainly questionable, as pointed out herein. Silver as consumed is not highly dependent upon its value or cost to the producer. The reason is that in the vast number of applications, the use per item is tiny. That means that if a particular item requires a tiny amount of silver, the cost of that completed item will not rise much whether silver is at $5, $50, or $500+ per ounce. It also means there are factors within such applications that preclude silver form being re-used via recycling because the cost to do so is prohibitive in relation to historical costs. If silver rises to a much higher level, then companies who use it may very well incorporate means within their manufacturing processes that would enable them to at least be better able to capture and recycle as much silver as possible. At present, much of this ends up in city landfills, never to again be recycled. For some reason most of the silver historically mined has come from the earth's crust and that has reached and gone over a peak. That is the reason that only around 18% is now mined from exclusive silver mines as opposed to by-products from other mines like copper, gold, etc. It costs around $20 per ounce today to mine so that then becomes a level of resistance, beyond which it does not drift very far. Yes, there are above ground supplies all over the world but those people who hold it are reluctant to sell until it rises in value to a point that seems equitable, all other things being equal. The vast majority of people would rather have silver in hand rather than exchange it for fiat currencies, unless they need it for sustenance or it transfers via an estate, etc. The advent of digital currencies may actually make people even more resistant to sell in the future. Most people like to value things in terms of currencies, but to me it makes more sense to value real things inversely, so that an ounce of anything 5,000 years ago is still an ounce today, but the currencies that came and went during that time valued in extremes one way or the other until the currencies met their own demises. So the silver remained unchanged but the currencies, especially today because all nations have all fiat, can be manipulated regularly. If silver, or anything, goes up or down, ask why, and you will come to the macro conclusion that the only thing that changed is the value of the currencies themselves. In terms of demand, it has recently been revealed that the world has been in a silver deficit for the past two years, using many more ounces per year more than is produced. After a few more years of this, even the above ground supplies may begin to dry up. Conversely, if the price of silver rises, then more mines will crop up that were marginally operational at lower prices. There was a company some years ago, that claimed there was a huge deposit in China under the Great Wall containing around 30 billion ounces, but that may take a very long time before it ever comes to fruition. In the mean time, there is an opportunity now to invest at nearly rock bottom and within a few years the values may go up tremendously simply due to real immediate demands and possible long term supplies -- bird in the hand worth flock in the bushes.

Add one’s own work on top of his advice, ie., research on the people, the politics then the producer; read annual reports; compare multi year metrics; how much proven reserve? what is the All In Sustaining Cost? For instance, Thomas Kaplan’s 40-80Moz Donlin will be a 5-10 bagger within 5 years. 20 bagger is not out of the question depending on how high gold will go to.

I think the money to be made this year and going forward is going to be in stock picking in the small and mid cap sapce as the SP500 is pretty saturated due to over investment in index funds (that's what happens when you have half of Americans basically forced to buy it ever paycheck in their 401K). Small and Mid Caps have been trading at their lowest valuations based on forward PEs since the GFC over the last year. Silver hasn't performed for 40 years, I'd take copper and other more essential minerals and metals (ie lithium and nickel). Silver seems like one of the worst investments because it's not essential in large amounts in manufacturing and it's a byproduct on mining other things so as mining other things continues to increase quickly (which it will) silver will tank.

Don't feel badly about your GDX tax-loss harvesting sale, Adam. On a whim, and just for a kick and quick hit, I bought a small number of shares in TSLA a few weeks ago. It wasn't far from the recent bottom. After it being up 10% pretty quickly it checked back to around 7%. Not wanting to be a slaughtered pig, I sold for that 7% gain. It looked good for 24 hours. Today I'd be closer to a 70% gain. And that's been in just a bit over a week! LOL! Ouch. Truth be told, I never trust that Musk won't pull some card, real or not, from his sleeve just to fry some of his despised shorts. Sure a gain is a gain, but bloody heck, right? It performs best during a speculative boom, brought about by inflation and concerns over economic stability. Industrial demand never has and probably never will ramp up quickly enough to cause prices to go parabolic, but speculative demand has done so in 1979 and again in 2011.

One interesting perspective regarding PM miners crashing along with stocks (like 2008) comes from Michael Oliver. For starters, he doesn't believe the broad indexes will crash but instead have a long drawn out stair step lower. No crash = minimal marginal calls so less need to dump miners. In 2008 when the market turned down, metals had been in a multi year bull and were owned by a larger group of investors. In this stealth bull for PMs less people own them, therefore less sellers if/when the next significant leg lower happens. TLDNR, buy the dips in PMs, be right and sit tight.

I tax harvested my Franco Nevada Corporation gold royalty late 2022 and I am planning to re-enter. I am 64 and metrics point to much higher wealth in the future and taxes. Currently looking at Roth Conversion and starting to believe my re entry into precious metals should go in Roth vehicle even though tax harvesting will be off the table. What say you?

I think the only person on KZbin who offers that advice is Jeff Christian, who seems to be the only person stackers love to hate (other than perhaps Jerome Powell). Although not a direct quote, has has said something to the effect that although he is not forecasting it, silver could reach $50 per ounce, but it wouldn't stay there for very long. Reading between the lines, if silver hits $50, sell it, as you will be able to buy it back later at a lower price. I think it is important to keep in mind that he is willing to say that silver prices can go down as well as up because he is not in the business of selling metal. He sells research, mostly to governments and commercial firms in the metals and mining business, and has for decades. If his research wasn't any good he would have gone out of business years ago.

I just sold my small SLV position today (1/27/23), and my larger SGOL position too, while listening to Rick on this video. For we retail-types, commodities are generally best traded, not 'invested in' due to their incredible volatility, lack of income. A chart of SLV looks to me like it is experiencing major resistance. If/ when the capital markets begin to sniff out a recession, SLV will fall in sympathy with other commodities. Silver is a shiny toy for retail investors. A shiny, beautiful object. Date silver. Don't marry silver.

@ROGER REINER No need to even think about redeeming metal out of ETFs. If you want the physical metal, sell the ETF and buy the physical. It is exactly the same with a mining stock. They aren't going to pay dividends in silver dollars!

Depends on your goals -- ETF's accumulate but unless you have megabucks invested, you only have paper to redeem when it is all said and done. Mining stocks in good companies are usually the fastest to respond to rising markets, but do not rule out holding physical in a place that you can easily access.

Holding silver as a currency/coin/money unit is a memory for many older investors over 55. Other than industry use...silver will not shine as brightly as it once did as a means to holding wealth or having security. The newer generations have never written a check much less heard the beautiful sound a silver dollar makes. It's a coin flip at this point on silver.

First Im no silver bug. I dont disagree with your opinion. But its only part of the demand picture. Silver is mined at a ratio of 1:8-12 with gold. Its priced at a ratio far above that. Silver is consumed and destroyed in commercial use, and is not worth recycling at this pricepoint.

I am a little confused. Why does New Harbor recommend equal % in physical gold and miner's stocks? Gold is priced in fiat dollars and IF that system weakens or even tanks as expected then wouldn't ANY investments in the stockmarket also weaken or tank since stocks & ETFs aren't really "owning" anything physical? Physical gold is "insurance" according to Rick and Mining stocks are "investments" at best and speculation at worst. It doesn't make sense to me to have equal insurance and equal "risk". That's zero sum math to me. I am in the camp that speculation is great if you're rich or very young and can afford to lose everything. However, I see the average person being positioned with historically proven insurance that has the technical "possibility" AND likelihood of a once in a generation opportunity to generate vast wealth as a better "bet" and I personally would go higher than 10% with physical gold and be very leary of mining opportunities (unless well educated as Rick suggested). The average person doesn't need to be extremely well educated about mining to hold physical gold. Does New Harbor educate their clients about the mining industry and the pitfall (pun intended)? Even IF educated, people still need to remain vigilant because mining CEOs and Boards change plus the geopolitical atmosphere where the mines are located can also change. In summary, physical gold (and silver) is great insurance BUT can also be used as an investment tool when people understand the frailty of fiat money and impotence of central banks.

Welthion makes money thru fees, not results. Although valuable and well intended there is lack of transparency Please review in a video performance of both money managers you recommend. And their fees. I buy the thesis that maybe gold and silver will be good insurance and I own physical just no longer buy the urgency bs. Buy and forget it.
