Happy Ignorance (from the album The Opposite Of Never)
Song note #9:
Happy Ignorance is the 9th song on the album. The title probably reveals it all: it’s a song of joy, ignoring doubt, pain and failure in life and love. The joy, I think, can mainly be found in the melody and the harmony of the (almost never ending) chorus. In fact, except for the intro and the outro, the whole composition is one long chorus - a loop again. It took me a while to compose it though. I had to strip the song down quite a bit, because the original verses were too long and too boring. Finally they became the intro. Sometimes songs are written in half an hour, sometimes it lasts a few months or even years to finish the process in a satisfactory way.
As you can hear in the spoken word part of this track, the lyrics are about a relationship that starts as a clear blue sky and crashes like a thunderstorm. I wrote the song way after the break-up, trying to rewind and to remember the good things, when there still was harmony and hope. It has become quite a mellow song in the end and I have tried to sing it smoothly, as a ‘nocturnal crooner’. Some people hear echoes of The Divine Comedy here, some even made an association with Paul McCartney, listening to the melody of the chorus. Anyway, I don’t care about the comparisons. When I dream I sometimes wake up with the melody of the chorus. A good sign.
