The liberation of the Dutch town of Haarlem in 1945 in color! De bevrijding van Haarlem in 1945

This is another interesting film in our series about the liberation of the Netherlands in 1945. This time it is a full-length film about Haarlem.
Haarlem is the capital of the Dutch province of North Holland. The city is located about 20 km west of Amsterdam on the river Het Spaarne in the Kennemerland region.
In the year 1245 Haarlem received city rights from William II, Count of Holland. The Harlem district in New York is named after the city of Haarlem. It dates back to 1658 when New York was still called New Amsterdam under the colonial rule of Peter Stuyvesant.
On May 8, 1945, Haarlem was liberated from the German occupation during the Second World War. This film shows how the Canadians of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry entering Haarlem as liberators. The Canadians are welcomed with great enthusiasm by the inhabitants of Haarlem.
Flags with Swastika are set at half mast and liberation is proclaimed with placards titled 'Proclamation to the citizens of Haarlem'.
It shows how German collaborators are rounded up and are given a card with a number pinned on them before being taken away in cars.
One of the men is forced to walk around with a sign 'I was hangman in Vught' Other collaborators are removed from their homes with their suitcases by agents and soldiers.
A crowd watches as the men stand with their hands behind their necks before being taken away.
Towards the end of the film a man can be seen taking a paper from the townhall door and replacing it with the text: "Historical building, not to be used for military purposes", the old paper is trampled over.
We also see Haarlem's acting mayor Reinalda with notables and soldiers on the steps of the town hall, as well as a riot, children partying and a procession of soldiers;
The film ends with Mayor Reinalda reading an announcement on the townhall balcony on May 8, 1945. The audience in the square listens attentively and sings the Dutch national anthem. A man sticks a manifesto on a building; Dutch flags on buildings and churches symbolize the joy of liberation.
The rest of the film has no music because chosing the right music has actually proved to be almost impossible as it concerns a cruel war, death and destruction, but also joy because of the liberation.

Dit is wederom een interessante film in onze serie over de bevrijding van Nederland in 1945. Ditmaal betreft het een lange film over Haarlem.

Er is te zien hoe colaborateurs met de Duitsers worden opgepakt en daarbij een kaartje met een cijfer krijgen opgespeld alvorens in auto's te worden afgevoerd.
Eén van de mannen wordt gedwongen met een bord 'Ik was beul in Vught' rond te lopen Andere colaborateurs worden met hun koffers worden door agenten en militairen uit hun huis gehaald. Een menigte kijkt hoe de mannen met hun handen in de nek staan alvorens te worden afgevoerd.
Tegen het einde van de film is een man te zie die papier van deur haalt en vervangt door de tekst: 'Historical building, not to be used for military purposes', het oude papier wordt vervolgens Ook zien we Haarlem's waarnemend burgemeester Reinalda met notabelen en militairen op het bordes van het stadhuis, evenals een opstootje, feestende kinderen en een optocht van militairen;
De film eindigt met burgemeester Reinalda die op 8 mei 1945 een bekendmaking voorleest op voornoemd bordes. Het publiek op het plein luistert aandachtig en zingt het Nederlandse volkslied. Een man plakt een manifest op een gebouw, en Nederlandse vlaggen op gebouwen en kerken symboliseren de vreugde van de bevrijding.
Bekijk nu deze film zonder verder commentaar. Er is besloten geen muziek toe te voegen teneinde discussie daarover in de commentaren te vermijden. De juiste muziek kiezen is eigenlijk ondoenlijk gebleken daar het gaat om een wrede oorlog, dood en verderf maar ook vreugde wegens de bevrijding.
Commentaar met meer informatie over de getoonde gebeurtenissen en locaties wordt zeer op prijs gesteld.

Thank you for posting these remembrances of the liberation of the Netherlands. As an American veteran, I served to ensure these scenes would not be repeated in this world, but alas another dictator has arisen in Russia. I hope that I live to see celebrations in Ukraine similar to these. Again thank you for your efforts. I have been to the Netherlands many times and can say without hesitation the Dutch people are special. I get a tear in my eye watching these films knowing the horrors the Dutch people faced during the occupation and seeing their jubilation upon liberation.

The quality and colour of the film looks great Rick! It's hard to imagine the joy the townsfolk must have felt being liberated from the Nazis. War is terrible. My wife is Ukrainian and it feels like much of history is being repeated.

History is indeed being repeated. I have been comparing WW-II footage with present day footage: Still the same brutal tanks, shelling of civilians, useless destruction of buildings and infrastructure, very sad people etc. And for what? A primitive, totally outdated idea that a large, predominantly empty country with only 150 million inhabitants should rule the other 7 billion people in the world, on the basis of barbaric medievil and evil concepts. I wish the best to you, your wife and her family.

My grandfather was a Canadian Military Police and was in Holland when they were liberated. Unfortunately, he passed before I was born (likely PTSD related cause). I don't know a lot about where in Holland he was or what he did. I'm pretty sure my mum has his records. Anyhow, seeing this makes me an even more grateful Canadian Thank you! 🇨🇦❤️

It is still an active regiment of the regular Canadian Army. The PPCLI have been "getting around" since WWi when they were founded as a private regiment.

In de online beeldbank vond ik een foto (inventarisnummer 3893) uit 1947 vanuit vrijwel hetzelfde standpunt: blijkt toch het Houtplein te zijn! Er zat inderdaad een Fordgarage aan het Stationsplein, maar die blijkt aan de Jansweg gevestigd te zijn geweest (waar nu het leegstaande Rijkskantoor staat), voor de volledigheid: fotonummer 9321.

The Princess Patricia Light Infantry (known widely as the Princess Pats) were formed in 1914 and named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, Granddaughter of Queen Victoria. The Princess Pats were stationed in Alberta and Manitoba. In WWI they fought in the trenches at the Somme, Battle of Passchendaele, and Vimy Ridge and other battles.

My father became friends with several Dutch people from this town during the liberation,and we remained friends for years afterwards until they sadly passed away. One family also had an Hotel in Epe where my fathers unit was also based.

Thank you very much. It is sad that Beeld En Geluid is not at all active with proper film restoration nor does much to scan far more historic material. I offered four times to help them, but no response (other than an indirect comment that restoration is bad from a historians perspective, because it eledgedly tampers with the original footage). My opinion is that it is more important to focus on the viewability of footage and thus provide education as well as entertainment. 99% of the viewers are in that category and only 1% historians. Beeld En Geluid still have piles of film tins in their storage bunkers that have not yet been (re-)examined or ever opened. Most of their online footage was scanned in the 1990's with (now) obsolete film scanners. They did this at the time when the Dutch goverment gave them a subsidy, but that money stream has long dried up (apart from renovating their building in Hilversum). Also I can no longer find any nice public domain footage with their new search engine. About 80% of what used to be public domain and viewable online has disappeared. HD (1080p) stuff has now completely gone. It's like a tango: "One step forward, two steps back" So sad, especially considering that 50% of the population is over 50 years old and still interested in historic footage. Most of them will be dead in 10 to 25 years. Looking at KZbin's statistics of my channel, viewer numbers are low in the 10 to 30 years of age categories. At least I am doing my best to bring history closer to todays world by what I do as a hobby.

There's one "small" error in this documentary, The Netherlands were never liberated! A seize fire was reached between the Dutch and Germany in '45. In fact, technically spoken you are still a part of Germany. There's a reason why the 1st line of your anthem states: "ben ik van Duitsen bloed". What country would still use this line today when they actually defeated the German agressor in 1945? Correct, they wouldn't

I just checked the statistics. In all videos viewer retention drops right from the start, but I don´t see anything in the graph at the 06.40 mark when the audio stops (33% of the viewes are still watching then). There is a visible drop when the German collaborators appear at 09.30 (27% is then still watching).

At 19:00-19:03 , you see an ORANGE flag. People used to have two flags, a red-white-blue and an orange one. My grandfather had one. It was lost, unfortunately. All that remains is people using orange pennants hanging from the top of the flagpole. Vroeger hadden mensen naast de Nederlandse driekleur ook een oranje vlag. Mijn opa en ouders hadden er een. Helaas verloren gegaan.

around 5:00 we see prominent NSB party heads such as their leader Anton Mussert who was arrested and imprisoned in The Hague and not in Haarlem. At 5:33 we see Max Blokzijl and we can also see Robert van Genechten, and Carel Huygen - top officials of the NSB - in this sequence of the film as far as I know, they were never in Haarlem as part of being arrested and being in custody Mussert was executed in 1946 after being refused clemency by Queen Wilhelmina. Blokzijl was also given the death penalty. Genechten hung himself while in prison and Huygen served 10 years of an 18 year sentence

During the war no one dared to use their films and everyone filmed the liberation by the Allied forces. This is the main reason there is hardly any film/photo of the German occupation. Shame cause the deportation of people is not or sparely documentaded.

My guess is that being able to buy motion film was not the biggest problem, but how to get film footage of war attrocities developed was! You never knew whether the film developer would report you to the Germans. Maybe I´m wrong. Like today the occupying force tried to keep all news communication under control and applied censorship to anything that did not suite their objectives.

Ooit was de Rijn de zalmrivier van Europa. Ook werd er rond Haarlem veel paling gevangen, en ook wel snoekbaars. Men at toentertijd meer soorten zoetwatervis dan nu, bijv. voorntjes (gerookt), en ook karper en brasem. En dan zal ik andere soorten vis nog wel vergeten zijn.

Despite wartine occupation serious privations dont these Dutch look well dressed & turned out! (similarto Belgians & Danes but far better than the most of the Vichy French) I love the boys also in their plus fours. I wonder when they fell out of fashion in Netherlands as they were uncommon in other european countries except maybe Germany ?

The Canadians were kitted out by the British in WWII and in any case used very similar uniforms. Even today this Regiment use ceremonial uniforms very similar to the British with red tunics and Pith Helmets.

@@toonmag50 Its actually worse than that. they never forgave us for being the main reason they were liberated and Germany defeated. In hindsight we seem to have won the war but lost the peace because while we took 50 years to pay off our war and loan debt Germany was forgiven all its debts and had billions US dollars pumped into its economy. Germany now runs the EU anyway.

Its was definitely the Canadians. The easiest way I've found is the breast pockets on the front. The British normally have the buttons showing, the Canadians buttons are concealed underneath. But even that depends on rank and what sort of uniform.

Despite these being terrific colour films showing inter alia arrest of Dutch collaborzteurs and deliriously happy residents of Haarlem I still feel somewhat uncomfortable after all this time. The reason is having read the most absorbing books on the occupation of Netherlands concerning its Jewish Dutch born and foreign residents. For a so called civilised mostly Protestant country with little antisemitism before the war it certainly raised its ugly head in Holland with vigour and callousness. It is well known that fewer Dutch Jews returned home than any other european country and then their reception was just appalling & cruel. I can't understand those Dutch & those days. The books are for those interested are : "Hitler's Bounty Hunters" -tge betratal of Dutch Jews by An Van Liempt. Pup Berg 2005 "Ashes in the Wind- the destruction of Dutch Jewry" by Dr Jacob Presser. One must remember that (1) the Netherlands was one of the earliest countries to come under Nazi rule and (2) among the last to be liberated. (3) the Netherlands was (and still is) one of the most densely-populated countries in the world. Unlike even Poland it has few forests in which to hide. (4) the Netherlands had a long border with Germany and excellent road links to Germany. Nazi administrators could enter and leave at will. (5) Dutch public officials were told early to not create problems. They thought that what was going on in Poland could not happen there. By the time that they realized otherwise, it was too late. (6) the Nazis were swift to deport Dutch Jews. Once out of the Netherlands, Jews were helpless. (7) the Nazis intended to annex the Netherlands as just another German province. Part of that involved exterminating the Jews. (8) the Dutch actively protested Nazi abuse of Jews early... and that caused the Nazis to rush the deportation of Jews. The Nazis were careful to ensure that Dutch Jews were not subjected to massacres in the Netherlands. Enslaved Poland would be adequate. (9) Dutch Jews were often easy to identify by non-Dutch (especially Spanish or Portuguese) surnames. They had not been under any pressure to hide their origins until 1940 -- by which it was too late. (10) The only imaginable safe haven for Dutch Jews was the UK, which was obviously difficult to get to in view of the German Navy, which was not innocent of the Holocaust. (11) Jews had tight-knit families in dense neighborhoods, which made them easy to round up. Dutch Jews were well assimilated into Dutch political, cultural, and economic life before 1940. The swift Nazi conquest of the Netherlands made that irrelevant.

It must be remembered the majority of Western European countries easily handed over their Jewish populations in an attempt to satisfy the Nazi need to destroy the Jewish peoples. France apologized for it a few years ago. In my recent tours of Dutch cities which had heavy histories during the war, I was sickened at the lack of support or caring for those Jewish peoples who perished. Only 11,000 Jews returned after the war. If you take a Canal tour in Amsterdam you will be told where the Jewish neighborhood’s existed. At one point, the government began to destroy those homes to widen the street (if you believe that excuse), but the citizens were able to stop the destruction. The fact the Dutch of today show no caring for the millions lost makes me feel ill. It took the Canadian and British armies to free the Nederlandse. And don’t forget, the Dutch did not participate in WWI. I only saw one Synagogue and it was a new building. Beyond sad the Dutch people do not appear to care.

Why build many synagogues for people that aren’t living in NL? It has nothing to do about not caring! Even churches are vanishing in the NL. People mostly do not care anymore about religion in NL. You can find a lot of mosques in NL because there is use for it. Almost every religion can build a building to practice their religion. Coming to the NL as a tourist in Amsterdam and reading some books and then forming your opinion about how Dutch feel is a bit delusional at the most.

@@pdb1565 You missed the point, and then decided a native is a tourist because you believe only tourists take canal tours. In taking a friend around the Nederlands, it became obvious, more than when I was young, how little the Dutch acknowledge the Jewish population during WWII. The point of mentioning a Synagogue was to acknowledge what other religious based sites were rebuilt by the returnees from war, there were not enough Jews to do the same. Those who did return had no or few belongings because theirs was stolen or destroyed. This is being acknowledged more in the present than in the past. While a brick and mortar building does not have to be a place of religious reverence, history must still be acknowledged. Books and films are finally bringing history to the surface, information many are not aware of and the stories are amazing. There is an excellent new interactive museum near Arnhem which puts the visitor squarely in the battle through use of participation in action packed scenarios and tells the history. Finally, the whole war should not have been about the Jewish population and others and evil doesn’t care about the target, only the ill gotten goods.

I live now 54 yrs in Canada and have worked for both canadians and people of the US in canada..AND I taught English as a second language to immigrants.. taught adult cdns to read and write.. and yes you are reading this correctly! Canada uses the british spelling in their english language. thusly it is colour.. not color.. which is american.

History-lessons became Social studies. SUSPICIOUS Of anything that might smell of chauvinistic feelings.
