I have a lot of experience like yourself. I was on disability for several years due to mental health. I had a super hard time choosing which direction to go next. My head spiraled with choices and I would freeze up and have anxiety attacks. I think a good way is to just choose a direction and start. Even if it’s not your optimal choice. You’ll meet new people and have experiences on the way that’ll start to open up options for you. Maybe things you never even thought of. And if it isn’t working out it’s not permanent. Start looking again and just go. Keeping moving has been key for me. Literally the thing that got me going again was just applying for a job near me and they called me the same day to come in. I was hired that day. Not a big job, just part time, and not where I want to be but it keeps me moving and engaged and really helps with self esteem. I didn’t think I’d like the job much but I ended up liking it but I’m not staying for any significant amount of time. A lot of businesses will and in most cases must accommodate you if you have physical disabilities. That’s just my two cents and might not work for everybody. Good luck sir.

Excellent introspection Rick. I was an amateur “musician” like every kid growing up in the 80s and 90s in India who wanted to be a rock guitarist. My “calling” was of course, medicine, so I went through the long and arduous educational path of becoming a physician and in that process, migrated to the US about 20 years ago. I’m now in my mid 40s, faculty at a prestigious medical school, and a transplant physician who loves what he does for work. However through the travails of the pandemic, and life, I have enjoyed your channel greatly, for all the reasons you mention in this video. I’ve come to the realization over these past years that music has always been my first love, and medicine my love and sustenance. When colleagues are surprised that I play guitar reasonably well and joke that I could’ve had an alternate career if I wanted, I always laugh it off by saying that “it’s better that I am a good physician than a mediocre musician”, but sometimes I wonder…

I'm 45 (picture was taken 10 years ago) and I can totally relate. Success and talent don't go hand in hand. You chose the best path for you at the time and a relatively secure way to make a living. Music isn't a career unless you earn a college degree in it and still isn't a viable, secure livelyhood. And we all have music within us, everybody can make a killer song knowing very little theory and harmony. Just keep working and playing knowing you won't have to suffer the uncertainty of a struggling musician's life. You've got the best of both worlds. There are plenty of extremely talented musicians busking, and very mediocre performers in mansions.

As a final year med student in India wanting to move to the US for residency, a lover of rock music and an enthusiast of this channel as well , it is so cool to hear this from you sir. Trust me one major reason I wanted to move to the States was to be close to the "music", I so admire. I've been fairly passionate about music myself throughout my life and really wish I could explore it on the side in the future, but truly believe medicine is my calling. I really really relate to what you described. It was lovely seeing this comment. :')

I was born in 1972. I had an absolute passion for music when I was a teenager, and even younger. I taught myself to play guitar and music helped me through those depressing, awkward teenage years. Somehow, over time, I lost passion for music. I would rather have silence than music. I’d rather hear the hum of my automobile engine, or a podcast playing, rather than having music playing. Then, I stumbled across your KZbin channel. You, single-handedly, reignited my love of music. I dusted off my old guitar and changed the rusty strings and started playing again. Music, again, fills my home. I just want to thank you and my only regret is that I didn’t have a teacher and music guru like you when I as younger. You are a gift to the world.

Yes Rick, at 63, like you, I've been lucky enough "to have a number of careers," including in music. Back in high school, I read Robert Frost's, "The Road Not Taken," and it hit me the way The Beatle's originality hit me. I played music early on (my father was an orchestral percussionist) but I eventually became a writer and poet after having played in jazz clubs in NY and had an Off Broadway musical produced in the early 90s. This short video that you just made is an important one as it is an inspiration to young aspiring human beings who might love the arts but don't know if a life in the arts is still possible. You demonstrate in every video that it's not only possible, but essential. Love and passion for the arts is what propels us into higher levels of thinking, with a greater understanding of the human condition. And most important is the idea that when one door closes another one opens. That is the path of a good life, which we were not blessed to live, but are compelled to create. Well done.

I’m not a person with musical talent, but I love music and music history. Through your videos I’ve learned so much about classic and new music. I appreciate a song so much more when you break it down piece by piece and I come an understanding, even on songs I’ve heard time and again over the years. Thank you for your videos and excellent teaching. Rick, you are much appreciated and always a fan of your channel! ❤️🙂

That moment of panic when you read the title... surely Rick isn't quitting just yet!!?? Phew, relief. I love watching everything Rick puts out, so much variation and just the best content. What makes this song great has to be my favourite though, I have heard things in songs that I have listened to a thousand times and never put my finger on what the artist was doing to get that effect, or just been oblivious. Definitely my most watched KZbinr. Please don't give us anymore heart attacks Rick!! 😅

I turned 68 this month. Drummed in bands in my 20s, started an IT career that lasted 43 years, formed a band in my 30s that's still a going concern 31 years later. Retired from IT last year, dug deeply into studio time (including watching Rick's videos frequently) and am now collaborating constantly with three friends to write and record using Studio One, Dropbox, and the treasured rare IRL time we have in each other's studios. Since age 22 I've been so fortunate to have my music life run parallel to the rest of my busy life, and to just be having so much fun in music now is what makes this day and the days to come, great. To sum up I'd say that even if on some days, you only have 5 - 10 minutes to work on music --- do it, don't stop. You'll be glad for it.

What a great piece. I'm a 79 year old jazz guitarist with a playing career that's in steep decline. I was just talking to my wife yesterday about "nothing lasts forever." I'm not dependent on misic income any longer, but I have loved playing. Looking back I'd say I should have made more of an effort to meet and play with younger musicians along the way. They are the ones getting work these days and they mostly don't know who I am. On the other hand, I remember getting work that older guys, including some of my teachers, were being passed over for. So it really is my turn to step aside for another generation. But I don't know many musicians who volutarily stop playing. Who wants to quit doing something that gives so much joy? I bought a new amp just a few months ago, so I am still holding out for those next gigs, even if they're few and far between. One of these days I'll be playing my last one ever, and I think I'll be OK when that happens. Meanwhile, I keep practicing. Oh, and I love your videos.

After over 20 years as a merchant mariner, I retired and went to business school to start a new career. Right after I graduated, my aunt needed care at home for the last eight months of her life. So I did that - on a level I never thought I would EVER do. Then I took care of my father, who suffered from dementia, for the last 5 and a half years of his life. Again something I never thought I would do. That was the most rewarding and traumatic time of my life. But I learned that you never know where life will take you. Please don't stop making content on KZbin. Your videos have been a ray of sunshine and brought smiles to my face on my brightest days as well as on my darkest days. Because of your insight and willingness to share your knowledge and love of music, I have come to love new (to me) songs and learned to appreciate songs I've known my whole life on a level I could never have achieved on my own. Thank you, Rick. I don't know the words to fully express my gratitude for what you do. But ...Thank you!

I absolutely concur! Different facets of the same diamond are still a diamond. Thus, Rick's always been in the music business in form or another. I've always worked with people. Retail, restaurant, medical, photography. It sounds odd if I say I'm in the people business, though. I'd much rather be able to say "I'm in music even though I possess no musical ability whatsoever." The closest I get is music appreciation and being able to photograph the hell out of concerts and artists. So, um...I guess I'm in the people business???

Rick oh Rick oh Rick. Your channel is a bit of a shrine to some of us. I work in a profession that spends a lot of time looking at KZbin. Its fair to say that while you are a KZbinr you are a Content Producer as we would describe it. Generally you can divide what goes on in these platforms into 2 groups: Influencers and Content Producers and you are very much the latter. Of course you influence but it happens because your priority is to make great content about something you care passionately about and have an excellent domain expertise on. For that reason, the usual curve of a KZbinr lifespan just does not apply. Be happy and make the content you love and sorry about all that demonetization/copyright crap.

It's true to a degree. What that realization can allow us to do is to focus on specific things and become really good at them. I might not cure cancer or play a professional sport, but I can be good at my career, a good son/spouse/father, and I can find ways to make my life meaningful in ways I didn't imagine as a youth. Our possibilities might be lessened by breadth, but with age and wisdom we can understand success and purpose with far greater depth.

While I agree with your sentiment that nothing lasts forever, might I offer a different idea… you are SO entertaining to listen to, not just in your music analysis (which you have presented so well on this channel), but in particular when you interview (citing your recent Matt Cameron conversation as an amazing example). I would LOVE to see you enter a new phase in your career where you have that “Inside the Actor’s Studio” feel with musicians, producers, etc. to get in their head about what they are thinking when they are doing their job well. You have this innate ability to understand each step in the music making process and bring those elements to light from the artist through your conversation with them without being sensational, being present in the dialogue, and staying true to their artistry. You do great work, dude-it seems like you have just scratched the surface!
