Almost the same. I'm very keen on bass but the start discouraged me - a player spotted showing off on Instagram (definitely not the source of information as I see the world). But then.. what a hook, how clever she is at talking, clear and meaningful, a lot better than rock stars mainly saying _ya know...yyy_ya know_. What a fine story of a Bengali family, what competence in musical background. So interesting. The only pity Rick was not talking from behind a drumkit where he could've provided some structures to play upon. Anyway, in 50 minutes from very skeptical to almost a fan is quite a journey. And yet, however, while digging those refined, cultured Bengali families where every second person is an artist of some kind, we should not forget the social stratification caste system in India. This is a very assorted and filtered, very privileged social class whereas in countless millions of lower level caste hardly anybody can enjoy such a supportive family backing and prospects.

I think Mohini should actually consider her extended family's intentions to safeguard her from being indoctrinated to play the bass. It seems that they were concerned about her. I think many parents may fall into the trap of trying to live their dreams through the children, almost not leaving any room for the child to grow and have their own dreams. Maybe she should consider that - it could be a possibility. A child must show interest in something, before we set about exploring how deep their love for it is.

Her energy is infectious! Somebody gotta get her in for a biopic. Her early life story is ripe for a movie! 😅 And loooove hearing about music from less "conventional" perspectives like the traditional instruments/music from India.

What an awesome interview Rick. What a phenomenal young talent in Mohini. Where have I been? She is unbelievably talented and wise beyond her years. I am 69 years old and grew up in the beginning stages of fusion. I hear a few artists in this young lady’s playing. She would fit in any genre that she found herself in. WOW 🔥🔥🔥. God bless her father for guiding her and instilling all the necessary values for her to be successful. Also, her mother for holding down the house. Having amazing and loving parents are such a blessing to have in your life. May God bless her in all of her business endeavors. Rick, again, you killed this interview. God bless you as well

Saw her when she was about 8 or 9 . Had the opportunity to take drumming lessons from one of the maestros of classical / jazz / rock n roll drumming from Asian continent , Late Sir Moloy Dey ; often used to hang out at his place during / after college hours ; he was talking about his younger brother Sujoy who was a studio musician and live bass player for the legendary Asha Bhosle and also mentioned that his wee daughter who started playing bass. I think I have a photo somewhere I was posing to play guitar that happened to be Mohini's dad's 😛, it was probably a jumbo 8 or 12 string German Rosewood guitar. This kid is phenomenal , she has inspired so many female musicians and taking it to a different level each day. It's been over 13 years I've been following her. What a rockstar !!!!!!!

Waited for this. Bass goddess came down from heaven to show us pure genius, personal strength, intelligence and gentleness. Such delight to watch this lady and imagine how much work she spent to get where she is right now. Absolutely stunning and always a ray of light to see young artists like her in this sometimes mad world. Most moving her reflection on her fathers much too early passing away - makes our hearts open up to her.

This was a surprise to me to hear Mohini Dey talk more about herself from her early years as a very young bassist. There's an enormous amount of skills and knowledge from this lady. She could be one of the top female bass players of all time, and be alive at age 27. She could stay twice her age doing more bass-playing kinds of stuff unheard of. Congratulations Mr. Rick B. for this great interview. Mohini Dey is an awesome and highly-skilled female bassist.

“Both sides”, hahaha. Great interview. Rick, you get nothing but admiration from me, no matter what you do. Mohini was so brilliant and expressive as an artist and in her openness and cogent delivery. So funny she says ”I don’t like to talk”, because she did that a lot but in an informative and wonderful way. You were great to not only understand what she was saying, ask the great questions, and then get out of the way for the answers. I will be following her. You, I have nothing but respect and admiration for.
