@neilbradley3 жыл бұрын
Any instrument is a "real" instrument. The whole "real" vs. "fake" is just arrogance. It'll be nice when we focus on actual music making only and forget the means of how it got there. After all, the electric guitar was originally considered a bastardization of the acoustic guitar. Same with the piano/harpsichord. If you want to hear acoustic guitars, fine, (I like 'em too), but they are no more "real" than any other instrument, electronic/acoustic or otherwise.
@chrisggoodwin7773 жыл бұрын
@@neilbradley the electric guitar and harpsichord still require a musician to play them. I'm not saying digital music"sucks" or is inferior to live recordings, in fact I like a lot of the electro-pop and hip hop from the 80s, but my overall musical taste favors songs which feature instruments played by musicians instead of musical parts created by software
@neilbradley3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisggoodwin777 Can't argue with personal preferences. I'm just objecting to the word "real" in this context. It's elitist and arrogant. I'll also point out that you still need a musician to drive/program electronics as well. I'm a sucker for a good live band - I tend to like acoustic guitars and a good metal riff. I also like a good techno banger.
@chrisggoodwin7773 жыл бұрын
@@neilbradley I am neither elitist nor arrogant, and you're absolutely correct; there's no arguing against one's preference, and it does take a skilled person to compile and program digital tracks (I've seen some DJs create new songs on the fly with their gear, which was amazing). I'm not disparaging anyone's creative outlet, nor should I. I thought Rick's comment was funny and interesting, so I posted it
@neilbradley3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisggoodwin777 Yeah, I didn't get a sense that you were, either. Just those who think that somehow an acoustic instrument is somehow "superior" to anything else. But I get Rick's point - it's nice to hear some played instruments (as far as we can tell, anyway) without all the artificial pitch shifting that seems to dominate so much popular music these days. But even this list had a couple with pitch correction. Overused.

It doesn't exist in pop charts mostly, however, even in european countries there is a large fanbase. That tells me no innovation and songwriting by committee. Everything is formula and check the boxes, just as bad as modern movies. I always wanted to ask Rick 20 years from now will you still remember any of these songs. Rick always talks about early 90s songs but there's the nearly 30 yrs gap from then that gets no mention. Most is folk in their free sampling menu. Lots of cool indie stuff. Like barnaby bright. And you obviously have a great ear for music. You’d be a lot of fun to jam with. Once I was with a group of friends and a couple had their guitars and it came to my turn, so I sang the old standard I’ll Be Seeing You and the ones on guitar weren’t familiar with the song so I sang a bit of it to them acapela until they felt comfortable coming in. It was so fun cuz they predicted different chord changes and I went with it and pulled them back, they the song would go in a direction I wasn’t expecting so I’d go with it and then lead them back. They weren’t into jazz until that night. They found out how amazing that creative process of listening and responding could be. It was so much fun!

Pure pop is great! When my children were early teens and beginning to get into less pure pop music I told them firmly not to despise pure pop - it's for now people and can carry a lot of heavy stuff while being danceable and uplifting
@stevehall51283 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The fact that there is (and always has been) a lot of crappy pop out thete doesn't mean there's no good stuff. There's a ton of crappy "jazz," metal, and prog out there too; it doesn't invalidate those entire genres. P.S. You might like Will Joseph Cook if you haven't heard him. "Be Around Me" is brilliant IMO.

Me: takes 15 mins to find chords in a song Rick Beato: hold my beer.....plays the chords listening at the song in real time
@JaKrish3 жыл бұрын
Not sure he always does. I catch him following something off camera pretty often while he plays along, as if he’s written out the basic chord progressions on a screen beforehand. But who cares if he’s played them before the video? They’re just pop songs, and I don’t feel he’s trying to impress us, but teach us.
@gazzie120003 жыл бұрын
It's just practice, not miraculous! If you want to be able to do this then just keep practicing and you'll be able to do the same, especially with these type of songs. They are almost always a fairly predictable progression and you will recognize it straight away most of the time. If not you will be able to pick it up after a couple of verses/choruses.
@prant89983 жыл бұрын
@@JaKrish Yes, should we all assume he’s listening to the song for the first time like most of us? He kind of implies he is. My question, he’s such pro and knows the formula, why is he not pumping out hits himself all the time?
@ninethirtyone42643 жыл бұрын
@@JaKrish Most of these pop/country songs are really predictable, spending more time with music theory and looking at how chord progressions are structured you can pretty much play the entire song after few bars (except the parts where ot does something quirky which he always points out here)
@Neil_SM3 жыл бұрын
@@JaKrish Nah if you've been playing long enough and practice at following along with songs it becomes second-nature like that. For me, the harder part is it takes longer than he does to figure out what key something is in. But Rick seems to have something much closer to perfect pitch and also has a lot of practice and teaches the ability to blindly identifying pitches and chords. Once you have a "home-base" root and know what key the song is in, it's a lot easier to recognize patterns -- because in western music there are many patterns and progressions that tend to be found over and over again. And most western songs will contain some combination of the I , IV V chords in each key plus maybe a few more.
