I was once drunk in KC and walked into the Grand Emporium I think it was. Joe was up on stage playing a solo. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy throw a bottle at him. He dodged it nicely. I couldn’t believe anyone would throw something at any musician let alone one of the best. The bouncer grabbed me and began to throw me out. While Joe kept playing with his left hand. He basically did sign language with his right hand to the bouncer. Told him no not him that guy beside him. All with one hand while still playing. It was amazing. The bouncer apologized. Shook my hand and so did Joe after the show. Cool dude. Very humble even though he’s probably earned the right to be arrogant. Class act. On and off the stage.

I was at the first G3. They filmed it as well. Minneapolis, MN. Anyway, I was able to go backstage and meet Steve Vai and Stu Hamm. I was waiting for Satch and Johnson to come out so I could get their autograph and say "Hello." It was getting late and my friend was outside in the cold waiting because he didn't have a backstage pass. So I decided to leave because I thought Satch wasn't coming. As I am leaving out the back door, Satch and his manager come down the stairs and where on their way out the door. I quickly handed him my CD booklet and his manager said "Ok. We can do one." so then Satch signed my Time Machine CD book. I didn't get to talk to him but at least got his autograph as he was leaving. I was able to talk to Vai and he was super nice. I asked him about Bad Horsie. He plays the beginning in Crossroads and I asked if he had the song fully written at that time or wrote the intro for the movie and finished the song later. He said he had the whole song.

But there is a good reason why so many Italians-Americans took up the guitar through the 20th century-(and the history of jazz guitar especially attests to this)--they we immigrants who could not afford pianos. The affection for guitars (as opposed to the more traditional Italian affection for mandolins) persisted and has become somewhat of a cultural inheritance. Thank you for interviewing these two legends! I grew up listening to Vai's Passion and Warfare and Joe's Extremist albums religiously. Learned to play Summer Song and Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness at 12 years old. Well, at least my closest approximations of them, haha 😂. Just saw them live for G3 in Los Angeles, and they're still killin' it! Thank you, gentlemen, for all the years of great music.

Great to see Steve & Satch come full circle from childhood with that bond of creative expression only getting deeper. And Rick coming full circle interviewing Steve again as the go to Musician's Interviewer Extraordinare in 2024. Can't wait for the next one!

At least once a week I look over at my wall where 3 of my Jems are hanging and I see the Steve Vai signatures on them. Immediately, I realize how blessed I am to have been able to meet Steve on numerous occasions and even JAM with him on stage. I still can't grasp that concept that I jammed with Steve Vai and on another occasion I jammed with this band separately. You know, I'm not the greatest guitar player compared to most of these guys out there but that moment planted this eternal seed in my mind. It's the passion to keep playing the guitar and never putting it down. I've got 13 guitars and I'm sure that number will climb! Just knowing that 3 of them were blessed with the Vai touch is something I could have never guessed would happen to me. You crumble to your knees when your in front of that insane musical talent. Truly inspiring and I wish I had better words to properly convey how much Steve influences my musical life. I'm sure others too.

I’m watching Steve & Joe’s easy interaction, their stories intertwining, the looks, unspoken acknowledgments that relay “ Yeah, I remember that moment”. Rick’s spot on questions that propel the narrative. And I’m thinking, how on earth is it that each guest is so captivating and each interview continues to get better & better? And I think, this must be the pinnacle for Rick, BUT, what it is, is…Ricks on the mountain top. He’s walking & talking to others who have reached the top of their mountain. This is rarified content man.

I saw a Satriani Gig in Hamburg, Germany and it lasted for about 4 hours. After like 2,5 hours, the musicians paused except Satriani. He just continued playing. It was amazing 4 hours

Steve's set was probably the loudest concert I've ever seen. 😂

The final thank you's at the end are really moving. Jimi Hendrix playing, as Steve Vai said (around 34:20), was a "voice of God". I was at a workshop where engineer Eddie Kramer played Jimi's guitar solo from All Along the Watchtower, with everything else muted. The sound and energy from his guitar playing was so profound - everyone just sat in silence for a few moments afterward.

Two guys who became obsessed with the guitar. I love it! These guys rip man. I was a schooled drummer and now I have started guitar and bass. Jerry Cantrell, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Steve Ray Vaughan, is what I'm listening to. My guitar playing is getting good listening and practicing to these players. It is a guilty pleasure my brother and I inherited. Hard rock, Southern Rock, Blues, Grunge are my life lately. I am obsessed with music again and that is marvelous.

These two players were MASSIVE influences on me. They pretty much shaped my 80s-90s. Thanks, Rick for getting such incredible guests once again!

The last part of it was so wholesome! Shed light on Joe and Steve's bond. I have a friend who plays beautiful guitar and everytime I visit him it just clicks! None of us are on a level of Joe and Steve but the hunger to learn and explore the wonderful sounds keeps us going for hours! We'll definitely try playing with our backs against each other, I think that will really push us to not rely on our eyes and use just the ears, great tip! And Rick! Again, I thank you for this and the other interviews and lessons you've done over the years. These are very special interviews that millions and millions of musicians will keep coming back to over the years to come. What a legend!

I agree. For what it’s worth, their speech was clean. They were able to communicate in the setting without lacing their speech with a bunch of profanity. I grew up with a Dad who talked rough, so it doesn’t “offend” me. But it’s cool to hear megastar music giants who talk in such a way a young kid like their childhood selves can watch and listen and not have to weed through the language.

Literally every video release I go "Holy shit, Rick's interviewing another one of my heroes", only to see yet another awesome interview. Amazing channel!
