Same here man lmao I was in big band for all of middle and high school, and when we'd occasionally play a jazz piece, I did not enjoy it and it's left a sour taste in my mouth for years, even though I've listened to tons of rock heavily influenced by jazz since. Looking back on it now, jazz has a lot more of a feel to it than normal orchestral pieces, so trying to emulate that feel in a band with 60+ people, doesn't work so well. Picked up bass and started a band with friends about a year ago, and now I think I'm starting to really understand it as an art form. What I used to say was that jazz was like if you took a book with all the rules of music, tore it down the middle, then rewrote the stuff on one side of the page. While that's kinda true coming from the prospective of orchestral music, after playing rock, jamming with friends, and coming up with entire songs without writing a single note on a staff, I'm starting to see that jazz doesn't necessarily break the rules of music, but it allows a lot more freedom to express it.

You can see how Rick has taken in every aspect of this piece through repeated listening - he has listened deeply to each part, and appreciates not only the individual playing but how the parts combine, and how the musicians reacted to each other’s playing. Its like being able to look at an object and take it in as one thing, turning it this way and that and admiring it from different angles, while simultaneously zooming in on each individual piece of the object and studying their separate designs and what they are made of, and further, appreciating how all the individual pieces fit together; the assembly of it. There is so much to listen to in this piece too - great example. His knowledge and deep understanding helps him glean all this information, and its so great to see him point it out as he listens to it. Its a way for people without deep musical understanding to begin to catch a glimpse of “what makes this song great”. Go cat go!

Rick, bc of this video, and I cannot believe I’m saying this as I am the most ardent vocal hater of jazz and lover of hard rock/heavy metal, I’m trying to learn my first most basic jazz beat on my drums! Jazz feels so much looser and improvisational showcasing freedom and each musician’s interpretation of the moment compared to highly scripted rock songs where there is little to no room for this type of artistic expression. I may be completely wrong but that’s my first feeling of jazz vs rock. (But my favorite part is I finally get to RIDE my Ride Cymbal for a long time!). This video turned me onto a new path I never thought I’d take, thank you again, Rick!
