rick has said in other videos he has good relative pitch built from pitch memory but not perfect pitch. so while the former is achieved (i am the same as rick, and i find no shame in it as it works, and i thought others to make it work efficiently & quick), the latter is natural (tbh less of an accomplishment but defo a shortcut, ie good to have)

This is a cool topic and I actually wanted to point out how much your ears improve by learning theory even without any sight singing or dictation. You get used to a certain sound, have a label for it, it becomes immediately identifiable. I think people put way to much stress on themselves and perfect pitch. Sure it is great to have, but it starts feeling like you have it anyway when you can identify what you hear and write without an instrument(staff).

Cm/mai9add6add11(b13)+11/E and Cm/mai9add6add11(#13)+11/E have him notice which note is different, sing it and sing some scale using that note as a root. Or you could tell him to pitch everyday sounds or identify notes in a noisy setting(like create a recording of you mashing piano keys but in the back there's a chord playing through the whole thing and make him guess what it is)...Idk, I'm failing to find things that are still difficult xD this kid is a god. My relative pitch isn't bad but I wish I had a fraction of this ability

I have perfect pitch but I haven't gone much beyond music theory in the diatonic system, so while I can find all the notes of a chord by listening carefully, I don't yet have the advanced music theory knowledge like you teach so I can't name off a chord instantly like Dylan does here, I have to think about it a little. Also my relative pitch is actually atrophied because I don't really use it. I can't use the transpose function on any keyboard because it throws me off so much. Since the advanced chords are almost never used or needed in most of the music I listen to, there's never really been a need to learn. After a while, the diatonic system does get boring, like eating fast food for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. Especially since I arrange pop music for daily videos on another channel. I end up needing something more interesting, more varied, so I like watching your videos and learning something new. I really like your content because it satisfies that need to learn something more complex. Thanks Rick!

I have a few friends who seem to claim they have perfect pitch and often go to the local music store to congregate and feel rather proud of themselves. They like to show off by simply someone picking up a guitar and tuning the low E string to pitch and guessing when they have hit that low E. I know they are all full of the brown stuff as I can do the the same just by being so familiar with the Emin/Maj sound on the guitar hah ha.. I'm going to show them these videos of Dylan to put them in their place as they have internet and a big screen in the shop and watch them all go with their tails between their legs whilst I tell them the best they can do is develop relative pitch which is very very hard work and no hope of developing Perfect pitch which Dylan has the luck guy he is. I hope Dylan is thoroughly thankful to his dad for doing this for him as Dylans ability is wonderous and awesome in many ways. If Dylan decides to learn instruments in his future it would be fantastic to listen to a piece of music, know what the notes are and then be able to play them no problems. I myself are quite in awe of Dylan who has an ability I could only ever dream of.

Oh wow he has perfect pitch! Great! Now.... he is part of the 1 percent crowd, which I am in as well. What can me and him do which 99 percent of musicians can't do? Replicate music. Recreate music. Make 1:1 copies of Pop hits. This is a gift which people don't have. What should we be doing about this? Recreating songs? Becoming pop stars or cover song stars (like Weird Al)? The huge issue is no one is taught how to use our special abilities to become successful. I wish when I was his age, I took my special ability seriously. Now I am almost 30 years old and I wish I planned my future better with this special ability of mine. I sure hope this child does something similar instead of just letting people honor his special ability and go no where with it.

@@Toshio_77 Back in 1997, I got obsessed with each note on my toy piano. I started falling in love with B, then B Flat, eventually I stopped at G. I am not sure if I started to like F Sharp recently, but I tend to enjoy C music played in F Sharp. Anyways, I memorized each note on the piano just by indulging the notes when I was 7 years old. I did remember when I was a 4 or 5 years old, playing the note G, and saying it sounds like an aeroplane.

Lets choose a simple c major chord as an example, Dylan, I would imagine would hear the notes "c, e, g" and in that order he would recognize it as a C major root inversion triad. Why? Because he also must recognize the quality of three seperate interval sounds, a M3 below a m3, and a P5. But if he heard "e, g, c" he would identify the sound as a c major first inversion chord, as well hear a m3 interval below a P4 interval and a m6. So in this matter, Dylan probably hears chords individually, as separate segments and as a whole. What astonishes me is how he recognizes the sounds by name. I'm very excited for the music he will bring the world when he matures.
