Dave Gregory (ex-XTC, guy on the right) is one of the most underrated guitarists in rock, imo. Check out XTC's 'Black Sea' or 'English Settlement' to hear Mr. Gregory make that RIck 12 chime. Glorious!

t their New York meeting, Lennon asked Hall to make him a twelve-string model to match his 325, and in March '64, Rickenbacker shipped this guitar to him in London. The only differences are the headstock and the tailpiece. This short-scale guitar was used on a Dutch TV show, in the studio (Beatles For Sale) and served as a backup throughout 1964, and saw actual use at a show in Boston on 12 September.

The first thing you notice about a 360 is that it sounds like a Rick 360 when you play it unplugged. Even without amplification, you hear that jangly round sound. It's a Deco work of art that you can get chicks with.

I own two Rics (a 330/6 and a 360/12C63) and play them through a Vox AC30 with a Janglebox compressor pedal. Rickenbackers are fabulous guitars. Nothing else can match the sound OR the vibe. P.S. Has ANYONE figured out what song they play near the beginning???

I've owned five now, never had any problems with durability or the finish. They're the most well crafted instruments I've ever owned. The necks are a bit different to other guitars, but that's part of the Rickenbacker vibe. The neck shape and size also evolved through the years.

@bizarrefruit That's one thing Rickenbacker is respected for above every other maker; their unbelievable finishes. I haven't seen any others like it. Get a brand new one, and the finish is like glass. None of my Ricks is that new anymore, and the finishes have the old wear-and-tear now, but new, they're stunning.

The opening chord on "A Hard Days Night" was played on a Rickenbacker 325/12 specially made for John Lennon and as far as I know the only 325/12 ever made. By the way Lennon also owned a 1996.

If you are considering a 12 string rickenbacker then the 660 is my personal favourite. It has a slightly wider neck than the 330 and 360's which makes them easier to play. They also even have a slightly better ring than the 330's and 360's. The 660 is a solid body, where as the 330's are hollow, but the 660 still has the better jangle for me.

John Lennon used his 325 short scale Rickenbacker from the very beginning up to 1966. Then he started using the Epiphone Casino. George used his between 1964 to late 1965. He mainly used a Gretsch though.

Wow, I'm back from the site... 45 minutes later... I'm surprised Dave has so many guitars and even a 1953 Les Paul! I'd probably be looking at his site longer but I only have so much time in a day. Thanks though, I bookmarked it and will tell my best friend about Dave's site. My best friend got me into XTC in the first place.

i´ve got a rick 360/12C63 and a rick 325V64 Liverpool. i´m very pleased with them!! as tigerclawfan said, it´s a matter of your personal preference, but that they r fragile and have bad finishes is just wrong. rickenbacker is using one of the best lacquers in guitar fabrication. pete townsend threw his 360 from the stage and it wasn´t broken and it still worked perfectly!! so they are definitely not fragile!!

If you're talking about the guy on the right, that's Dave Gregory, formally of XTC - extremely well respected (by many, including McCartney), and a major Beatles fan with an encyclopedic knowledge of the band, its compositions and recording techniques. I GUARANTEE he's right, and you're wrong.

@guitarcapo Thanks for asking.George Harrison generally used his right hand to scratch his ass. There were times when after a long recording session,,he would give his right hand a rest and would scratch with his left hand. John Lennon vareid on his milk to cornflake ratio. If we're talking about the Beatle days he almost always used a 70/30 ratio. That of course would be 70% cornflakes to 30 % milk

Incorrect...Harrison had several Rics. He played a 450 in the very early Beatle years, and then had 2 360/12s. The first one was the one used in "A Hard Day's Night" with the pointed horns. His second one was with the rounded horns, used during the mid 60s ("If I Needed Someone") but that one got stolen.

Totally agree 101Volts! If you're into guitars BTW, have you looked at Dave Gregory's website? If not, Google it, it's called Guitagonauts. At the homepage, go to the Pick Of The Month section. He has a large personal guitar collection (around 50-60, some cheap and fun, most very expensive, quite a few of '50s-'60s vintage), with good photos and loads of info about each one. It's great!

It's not a lead guitarist's instrument. That's just the way it is. I've had one of these (a 360 model) for 25 years now and it's hands down the best-playing guitar I have. You can't do Jimmy Page/Angus Young/guitar god solos on it, no. But that's not what it does. But it has the lowest action I've ever seen on a guitar, sounds beautiful, plays effortlessly, and never, ever goes out of tune. It might not be right for what you do, but it most definitely is not un-playable.

Its a bit more complex. George Martin's idea was to start Hard Days Night with a chord opening, and also to fade out with the 12 string. The opening chord is basically the same as used in I Feel Fine. It is George's older Rick 12 (it is a '63, but he got it in '64, he did get a newer single binding one in '65, I have the '63 reissue, with the double binding). Later, Martin overdubbed a low piano note to the opening. The solo was the 12 again, with Martin on piano, but with the tape played at ha

Im sorry i am still a bit of a novice on the 6 string ric's myself, the trouble is there are so many to choose from, so you really need to read a lot of reviews from the net, on the various models, i own a 360 6 string myself and i love it, but my taste has leaned towards the 660's. I recommend you take your time in choosing because as you know, ric's are not cheap, so you want to get it right first time. Good luck.

the fellow keeps sawing that G sus chord... does he imagine it's the chord that opened the song, "hard days night"? well try this chord; hold down the low E string at the first fret--- then hold down the high E string with the B string again at the first fret...strum that and see what you think... now slowly glissando up those same three strings being held down... you have the ending chord to "people are strange" by the doors --- HOW STRANGE IS THAT?

Unfortunately the Rickenbacker company are such assholes to deal with, on a business level, that to a lot of dealers it just isn't worth the hassle. You can't find them in most guitar shops for that reason. Rickenbacker pulled entirely out of Guitar Center a couple of years ago in a fit of spite. You have to go to a big city like NYC or Chicago, to the big legendary music shops, to find them hanging on the wall in enough numbers to have some choice.

nah, dude. every guitar has it's own voice. as hard as you try, you'll never make a Fender sound like a Gibson, or a Jackson sound like a Rickenbacker. guitars are made from all different kinds of wood. and thickness, hardware, craftmanship and many other factors effect the tone. you can approximate a guitar tone, but every guitar has a soul.

@OpinionMan101 I don´t know what you would define as horrible but I can honestly say that I have never seen a guitar that looks more beautiful, feels more beautiful and plays more beautifully than my mapleglo 360, they are shiny, but it's lacquer, the wood quality is awesome and I like the lacquered neck because it makes bending more manageable. Go see one and try it, they are definitely an acquired taste, some people find the necks too thin. I am in love with my Rick ;)
