Bravo! Thank you A) for not spending the whole time talking, or giving your opinion, when we can hear the guitar for ourselves, and B) for playing some actual chords, as opposed to trying to show off your shredding ability, which automatically differentiates you from 90% of all other people posting things about guitars.

And as it goes for the Rickenbacker, I seem to like the jangly twang of the hollow body. But you better stop cause your last review got me to buy a Danelectro. You keep doing this and I'll start having to sell one of my cars, or even my house! Thanks Joe.

The D chord at 0:55 sells me the 330. 620 appears practical and is warmer, a little more low mids due to solid body and touches on Fenders and Gibsons a little, but for those seeking a Rick experience, the 330 jangle invokes Petty, McGuinn and so on.

My '02 620 has been my #1 since I got it, very under-rated guitars that can do a lot more than they're usually given credit for. I have a 2012 330 that is an absolute TONE machine! You need a little more volume for the hi-gains to really show their stuff, and IMHO a Fender amp for their brightest and jangliest sounds. Thanks for sharing!👍👍

Really nice comparison! I think honestly, they are surprisingly similar execept the 620 has more ring to it to my ears. Not surprising since it is a solid body. The 330 has a more mellow, warmer tone. Both great guitars!

Really cool comparison video. I love my Mapleglo 360. And I absolutely love the R.E.M. Lifes Rich Pageant album in the background. It happens to be my favorite R.E.M album ever. Peter's double tracking of his 360, a 12 string and his Gretsch really makes a cinematic sound on that album without making it overwhelming.

@@joesampson2658 I just absolutely love that one! Cool story about that... I was in Tower Records in the Bay Area in 1987 shortly before Document came out. When I first heard that song... What honestly turned my head was the last instrumental bars of the song after Stipe sang, "What If We Give It Away..." twice. Then it follows that instrumental and then the gorgeous ringing chord at the end that sustains.... I literally had goosebumps and funny enough my eyes watered just a bit. That beautiful jangly fullness just melted my ears. Then it transitioned to Just A Touch... I went up to the cashier to ask who this was. Found myself buying Chronic Town up to Lifes all on cassette. I still have them and they still play. Got my first 360 back in 1998.

Nice comparison. I have a 360 and 620. They feel VERY different, and sound a bit different. Both of your guitars sound really nice. I've noticed a fairly large variation in how hot/cold Rickenbacker winds their pickups, so that's something to take into consideration too. I find the 620 easier to play lead on or any kind of riffing, as there's less string behind the tail piece to fight against. The 300 series really shine with chorded playing with their big resonant bodies and airy feel.

Not a fan of beefy necks like on les pauls. I’m sold on the sound, but would like to know more about the 620’s playability. Obviously hard to find in stores to try out.

Thanks mate! Ricks definitely play different to other brands of guitars, and it can take some time to get used to them. I think a lot of it is down to the heavily lacquered fingerboard, rather than the shape of the neck - at least that's my impression. If you can't try one, I would take a punt on one anyway (if you can afford to!) and trust that you'll probably get used to the feel of it. They always hold their value if you decide it's not for you!

In my opinion (I own a few rics) it depends on what year it is. The 00's had quite thick necks, the 70's and 80's are more medium and thin profile. however, both 330's and 620's have a very narrow nut and string spacing, and in my opinion its THAT that makes them feel odd to most players trying them for the first time
@Jeffcatbuckeye
@Jeffcatbuckeye 2 жыл бұрын
The nut width is really only an issue on the 12 string models and even then it’s a bit exaggerated. It’s there but it’s not unplayable. If it’s an issue the 660 and 1993 plus have wider nuts on 12 strings.

My Rick 330 was my first "Baseball bat" neck gutiar. That took a lot of time to get used to. Since then I've only wanted to buy guitars with fat necks and have a franken-Esquire and a Rick 620 spec'd with the phatty. The 'board finish on the Ricks do not bother me much but I've always had to gently sand the back of the neck on any guitar with a high polish. Ruining the resale so I was making a commitment there. I can play double stop bends on both my Ricks but I go with extra light strings to do that sort of stuff. Otherwise I keep with chords, slides, and other non-bendy moves as Ricks feel strange when bending. That's OK, because I don't want for them to play like a Strat or a Les Paul. They force me to learn and play differently which is why I bought a Rick in the first place. That's what many don't understand...they try to force a Rick to be something its not lending itself to the paradox of control.

Rics are a big deception no one dares to tell. The classic sound of Rickenbackers everybody knows is not given by the guitar itself but the amp, which is of course a VOX. You plug a Rickenbacker into any other amp and it sounds like a casual guitar, you can´t tell it´s a Ric. The only distinctive thing they carried inside was taken out from the electronic circuit several years ago, which was the 0.0047 cap. So yes, you hit the nail on that one. It almost sounds like a Ric mainly because of that device. If you have the chance to try an Amplug VOXAC30, that little thing does real magic but it´s meant to be used with headphones.

In New Zealand they're expensive and hard to find, and of course Rickenbacker don't offer a Korean/Indonesian made model or a Squier equivalent. The upside to that is people who own Rickenbackers feel like they belong to an exclusive club :)

Awesome video. I don’t know why but the middle position of the 620 sounds way more jangly and softer than the 330’s. The 330’s sounds like it has more bite and is higher output maybe? As if the 620 is more like a single coil guitar and the 330 is more of a humbucker.
@joesampson2658
@joesampson2658 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, the difference is most obvious on the middle setting. I reckon the extra bite is mostly to do with the low action on the 330. Lots of classic chewy/bitey guitar tones (Big Star, the dBs) have super low action - you can hear the strings buzzing away!

Trouble with this is the typecasting of Rickenbackers as being nothing more than jangle boxes and Beatle banjos. Both guitars had lovely tones in this demo, and the hollowbody one had a more hollow tone, too. The thing is, that the 620 model especially- but both guitars really- are quite capable of good distorted lead tones and country chicken pickin', too. The 620 model is comparable to a Telecaster, and the 330 makes a good jazz guitar.

@WillieD7 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. I have only some experience with SGs and Mustangs but there are some similarities. The body thickness and trapeze tailpiece of the 610 feel more like an SG (the strings on Ricks are very high off the body - way higher than Fender and even more than Gibsons I think). Overall body size is probably similar. That said, I don’t think SGs feel as small when you play standing with a strap because of where the strap button is. Most SGs probably have wider fretboards too. My 610 had a somewhat beefy profile and felt great for chording but a bit tight for noodling higher up the fretboard. I imagine that while standing the overall body geometry is closer to the Mustang or maybe a smaller size Strat (Mustangs bodies are kind of long IIRC).

Almost identical but with a bit more jangle out of the 330. Lennon tortured the sound on his 620. It was like listening to scratching a chalkboard.

I know these are both 6 string guitars.But comparing the 12 String models, there isn't really that much difference in them when they are played through a VOX AC30 with some added compression. If anything, the 6xx / 12 sounds brighter and janglier. The 3xx/12 has more sustain and more chime. The 3xx/12 obviously sounds better when played acoustically because it is a semi-acoustic electric model. But the 6xx/12 sounds pretty good unplugged in a quiet room. The 6xx/12 has a slightly wider neck at the nut so it is certainly easier to play. And being a solid body, the 6xx/12 can take more physical "punishment". The 3xx/12 tends to be more fragile. The aesthetics of these guitars is really a matter of personal taste. Personally, I would love to see a solid body 3xx/12 but that won't ever happen. In a perfect world, I would have one of each. But if forced to choose only one, I would go with the 3xx/12. Rickenbacker 12s are all about the chime. And nothing chimes quite like a 3xx/12 Rickenbacker. If only they all had the wider neck of the 330 1993 Plus model.

@@joesampson2658 I've tried the 330, 360 and 620 12 strings. To my mind the 620 sounds best, but all are too narrow for me to comfortably play. The 660/12 has a wide neck, but they are few and far between over here in the UK for me to ty one. I do have a Jackson Surfcaster 12 which I think sounds better than any Rick I have tried, but again the neck is narrow. I have a Burns Double Six, many folks find the neck too wide, but for me it is very comfortable and easy to play. Though the sound is always a slight disappointment. Maybe one day a 660/12 will crop up locally and I can try one for myself.

They are curious instruments. They tend to have long periods out of fashion interspersed with short periods in fashion. They have a distinctive sound but can only be used for a limited number of styles. They are simultaneously the best made and the most ergonomically flawed of all the major manufacturers. Their basses though have a more widespread use but even so, don't have the flexibility of a Fender bass.

@@alanshewitt I bought the 12-string Rick 330. Unfortunately, I can't play 12-string to save my life. Can't get the hang of it. I thought I just blew a lot of money. But to my surprise, if you remove the octave strings, you have a perfectly good six-string. No neck adjustment is needed or to change hardware/nut. I love it now. It sounds great. Almost like my Gibson ES 335. If I ever want to sell it, which I won't, it is still set up as a 12-string. These guitars get pigeonholed not because of the sound/quality, but the history of it being a 1960s guitar and that they can't handle heavy rock. Which is untrue.

I can hear a difference (somebody earlier wonderfully described the 330 sound as more "plinky"), but with a small adjustment to the tone knobs I reckon they would sound virtually identical. I doubt if many people could tell the difference if they weren't played side by side. Especially in a live band mix. Of course, there's only one way to prove it - I'll just have to go buy a 620 to complement my 330 and do my own comparison. Sigh... 😂
