This was incredible. What luck to find your video. I was about to trade in my SE as I stumbled upon this informative session. I purchased the kit, replaced the battery (after breaking one of the original adhesive strips as well... oy), and am looking forward to keeping this beauty of a tiny phone going for a few more years. Less landfill material! Thank you very much.

Just removed the battery of an SE I got a month ago battery was 79% the tabs broke (rookie shit haha) I had to put alcohol as much as I could and with a plastic tool and my fingers pull the battery out lol, that was an absolute nightmare. Amazing phone still to this day lol even with the battery % that it had.

I'm wondering if it is even necessary to add the adhesive to the new battery....seems like it will be even more of a pain in the backside next time to replace the battery.

Rick, this was excellent! You were no nonsense, not goofy or silly, not trying to act like a comedian, you played no background music, and your audio levels were perfect. You did an outstanding job and I appreciate it!

I went through a number of vids before I lucked upon yours. You showed all the foibles trying to get these 1st gen phones cracked open without cracking them. I’m not embarrassed to say it took me about 1.5 hrs. to complete the replacement. Most of that time was spent getting the case to separate. Thank you for an honest, unfiltered and real life DIY. I would have quit the install if it weren’t for you. The phone is working flawlessly. Thank you so much!!!

EXCELLENT vid with great details, after watching 3 others yours is the best! After watching I decided to have it done professionally ($50) as I have the mechanical ability but at 69 years old I don’t have the patience and steady hands I see are needed, as Clint Eastwood says in Dirty Harry “a mans got to know his limitations “!

I just did this yesterday on my SE. Of course the adhesive strips broke right off for me so I had to resort to some 15lb fishing line to cut through the white stuff. Also, I did mine WITHOUT removing the display and the cables - not too hard if you can hold it open with one hand or as I did prop it up against my chest. Another thing I didn't do was glue the replacement battery in - there is absolutely no need to as it sits snug anyway. Happy to say all went well and I now have a phone that can run 2-3 days, as opposed to the old battery that couldn't stay 5 min away from a charger. There is absolutely no argument for having manufacturers glue batteries in - these are wear items that die meaning they will need to be removed and replaced. Another way to do it instead of a plastic credit card is to use a playing card with a 45 cut on the corner and run some alcohol over the edge - it will go through the glue like a hot knife through butter.

Replaced my battery today - this was the most helpful video I’ve found by far! I have a fair bit of experience working on PCs and laptops, so if you’ve done that sort of stuff before, it’s really not that different, just a whole lot smaller! Both my battery strips came out in one piece. What I found worked was to pull very slowly until a little resistance is felt, then slack off a bit, then repeat. It took me about 5-6 mins per strip. Just taking it easy and going by feel with no sudden movements. The only issue I had was the very last thing - the bracket over the button cable! There wasn’t a good shot in the video, but the side with the two holes is “up” - towards the battery. Also, one of my screws on the big top plate is captive on my particular phone. Lastly, THANK YOU for this video! $20 bucks for the battery and the phone is like new!

Very good video, the best on KZbin for this battery replacement. Love the tip of fixing the screen to a can, I used some very low tack tape to avoid leaving glue of the inside case. Personally, I don't think you need to detach the screen cables But DO remove the 4 screw shield to release the stress at the 3 cable bends. As Rick says, take your time, very slowly to remove the adhesive strips to avoid a headache further down the line. I found some low magnetic tape and cut pieces into a tray to position the screws so as not to mix them. Before assembly, gently wipe the grime build up around the edge of the glass and case profile. Pure alcohol and lint free cloth should work fine for this

I’ve learned from experience to check the front facing camera as well before you put the phone all the way back together because one of the 3 ribbon cables at the top that you have to disconnect for the screen is the front camera so if that cable isn’t on all the way your camera won’t work and you’ll have to take it all apart again

Thanks so much I agree with other commentors that this is the best video on the subject by far. I wish there was a way to nominate you for a KZbin emmy or something. My phone had a small metal cap over the connector for the fingerprint/ home button. Also there is a rubber shield covering something near the power button. it was out of place and had kinked and creased one of the ribbons from the digitizer. I was able to manipulate it into it's proper position and flatten the crease in the ribbon, doesn't appear to be any harm done. I used the glass stovetop on our range to heat the case. It was still warm from cooking earlier, it was barely cool enough to touch with my bare hand. Set the phone on it for about 3 minutes until I could feel warmth on top of the battery. Carefully and slowly pulled the adhesive tabs as you instructed. They both stretched and clicked their way out 100% clean. The most difficult part of the reassembly was getting the one non magnetized screw into place. I've rebuilt quite a few android devices and a couple iPhone screens but this is my first iPhone battery. It went smoothly thanks to you. One less piece of ewaste to be dumped on a foreign shoreline.

Excellent instructions. I used a tiny standard screw driver to pry the tab of the stretchy adhesive from behind the cable end of the battery and then was able to pull on it until is started to tear. At that point I put the std tiny screwdriver back in and wrapped the sticky stretchy adhesive onto the screwdriver and winched the adhesive out perfectly; just kept turning the screwdriver until all the adhesive had rolled onto the screwdriver shaft!

Terrific tutorial; I practiced on and removed an almost brand new battery from my old (and dead) 1st Gen. SE and put it into my wife's SE (now mine - she got the new phone...). Your explanations and warnings were totally spot-on - other than an extra cover over the Home button connector. You made it so a 64-year-old with the right tools (less than $9 from WMart) could do it. Took just over an hour total. Thanks for the time and effort you put into making this. It is very appreciated. By any chance, do you have a tutorial for re-doing a corner shower pan and tile?

thanks a lot for this. Super helped! But yes I think however slow u do the adhesives, they can be real jerks lol. To someone else reading this, it's somewhat ok to bend the battery (not too much) I bent mine ever so slightly just to be able to access the adhesives again. (another heavy note, just try lifting using a plastic tool and not metal) After all of that, everything was a breeze to install and put back. Good luck to anyone!

Very helpful video, thank you! For me the hardest part was getting the case open. I don't think I'm too weak, but it took me a lot of strength to put enough force on the suction cup to move the screen. I eventually used 2 suction cups and wrapped some strong wire around my phone to keep the 2 parts from flying appart. That probably saved a lot of cables inside. And also, my device (128 GB, EU) had an additional cover on top of the Touch ID connector, but that wasn't too hard to handle.

Absolutely agree, cases on videos have been opened more than once so easy to separate, also reconnecting the cables wasn’t as straight forward as shown as the alignment is not that easy, otherwise a well presented video.

Great vid, thank you!! Well done. For picking up tiny screws, you can also use a tiny piece of duct tape to press onto the screw, thereby picking it up, and then carefully move it to the new location, being sure the screw doesn’t fall off the sticky tape in the transition.

Great and very helpful video. Only issue I had was a little metal cover on the home button cable popped off separately but I was able to figure out how to replace it. I was very careful with the adhesive pulling it very slowly after heating the back of the phone with a bed heating pad and got both strips out cleanly then the battery just came out, just like robertaustin did. Really, no problems thanks to Rick and a good dose of patience. One other thing, I taped some blue tape upside down in the plastic tray the battery came in to use to stick the screws and covers in order.

Thank you Rick. I'm considering changing the battery on my daughters iphone se as it won't turn on. Apple want a minimum of €243 to change it, yet their trade in value against a new phone is €40. It appears that I have nothing to lose! Nice idea with the can to support it as well as initially turning the screws the opposite way. Paul

I brought one of those kits. Unfortunately not via your link. The tools were adequate though the tips were not magnetic enough to hold the screws firmly. I used the suction cup as you did but it came apart quicker than I thought it would. The button ribbon separated and the metal clip went flying. Lucky I found it and no damage was done. The top right screw on the screen plate was not magnetic neither on mine. My adhesive broke right at the tip and I had to pry the end up to get hold of that tape. I distorted the end of the battery quite a bit. Be careful were you lever against the board. Then everything went back together, very fiddle connecting the connectors and screwing the plates back on. The button cable was very tricky to get on though the metal plate was easy. Surprise surprise the phone now works. Thank you.

I just replaced my battery via your vid- it worked! Also, the fact that your adhesive broke during the demo was actually a very helpful point in the vid because I pulled my adhesive at too low an angle (even though you warned against it) and the adhesive broke off. So I got some floss and worked the battery out with that. Excellent vid, thanks so much! I’m now calibrating the battery per your instructions.

Rick, you did a fantastic job in your step by step explanations on this overly complicated job of replacing a battery. As a retired Human Factors Engineer I can honestly say that I think Apple did a horrible design in the battery replacement steps. I wonder if very thin velcro tapes, to hold the battery in place, might have been better than the glue-tape. Leave it to Apple to make it overly complicated!

I normally inject a little (by syringe) isopropyl alcohol this losen the tape completely under the battery by contact and are harmless to electronic, it also evaporate within minutes, Losening the screen, I apply heat on the glas (never above 60-70celsius) if unsure about the heat, use a hairdryer around the edges continuosly moving it close range for 30-60 sec. heat can destroy the mother board, if to much heat under the battery.

Great video. I noticed your Touch ID cable was missing its metal retainer clip in this video. I had to find another tutorial to cover reinstallation of that little sucker. Both pull tabs for the battery adhesive broke instantly so I had to break the rules a little bit and pry the battery out with a gift card and bend the battery in the process. Also as others have pointed out in the Amazon review, this battery is about half a millimeter thicker than the original Apple battery. After reassembling the phone, if you press hard in some areas of the screen, you will see the LCD discolor and warp a little bit towards the bottom. The extra thickness of the battery pushes against the display. It's pretty minor though and the battery seems to be good quality regardless.

Question, is the battery actually good? I’m trying to find a good battery substitute, and I’m afraid whether the battery is genuine enough to support the iPhone

Removing the screen seems unnecessary. Warming up again for the second glue strip would ease the pull. Why not use one glue strip ?

Followed along step by step, seemed easy enough. Powered it back on, now the touch screen doesn't work.

I would try removing and reconnecting the cables. Sometimes they don't get seated properly.

I just bought this phone. Didnt know it had a regular headphone jack until now! even more excited and will definitely be doing this battery upgrade! thanks for the vid! Has anyone used a hot air gun on low setting? I also read a review on amazon that said it was easier to pull the glue strips down the length of the battery. Any thoughts?

I'm about to try this when my new battery gets here. What if you don't put the new adhesive strips back on would anything bad happen? Just thinking in case you have to replace the battery again it would be easier

I just got a Replacement battery for my 1st Gen SE. the Apple battery is definitely in need of changing to a new battery! It’s Only like 75% so It dIES FAST! I didn’t get the same Replacement Battery as yours, But I have 2 other Different Replacement Battery Kits for an IPhone 8 and 8+ . If you by chance see this, What If You didn’t Put the New Adhesive on the new Battery? And instead Just Put the Battery in without it?
@Rickmakes

I don't know all of the implications of not using the adhesive but I've heard of people leaving it out. I personally use it, especially since I likely won't be changing the battery again on a specific phone.

I have an iPhone SE 1st generation, and I followed the instructions, but the inside of my phone looked much different than yours and other videos. I have a black plate and next to that a silver plate. After opening my phone, I don't see a battery. Any idea what this is about?

Is the black part not the battery?

Changed the battery using your directions. One glue strip snapped. I couldn't get the floss trick to work, so used a card to prise the battery up. The most difficult part was the final connection. The small cover had come off so it was a bit fiddly to replace both, taking several tries. I took the opportunity to clean around the edge of the glass with an alcohol wipe. It was reassuring to see the Apple logo appear before I had completed the final connection. Once done, my daughter was able to remove everything and reset it. However, the iphone won't charge. The charger is fine, as it works on another iphone. It appears the original battery was probably ok, with the problem being the charging port. Have you changed one of those?
@Rickmakes
@Rickmakes 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't changed a charging port but I don't think it is any more difficult than changing the battery.

@@Rickmakes Thank you. I have found a video relating to that and have ordered a new charging port. I tried a DFU reset, but that didn't make any difference to the charging. The iphone shows that it is charging, but it isn't.

I changed the battery using your tutorial. I purchased the kit, and the phone kept turning off and on. I purchased another kit and I have the same issue with the battery. I even changed the charging port. The battery is different than the one in the video. I have 2750 mAh. What is wrong?
@Rickmakes
@Rickmakes Жыл бұрын
I haven't heard of that problem before. Does it do it if you reconnect the old battery? I would try disconnecting and reconnecting all of the cable you had disconnected replacing the battery.

@@Rickmakes I did all that and it keeps turning off. The initial battery is not smooth anymore and I am a bit apprehensive to add it and see if that would do something different. I even did a firmware recovery. I wonder if I am doing something with calibrating the battery. After I installed the new battery, I turned the phone off and kept it charging for several hours.
