Forwarded as received THE IK-ESTABLISHMENT DEAL: WHY IS THE ESTABLISHMENT EAGER TO REACH A DEAL WITH IK? What the deal signifies is the surrender of the establishment with face saving and safe/respectable exit for GB, primarily. The deal is only around the modus operandi to achieve that. And once the deal is announced specially by IK then wriggling out of it will only strengthen IK even more. So once the deal is done there's no backing out. Agreeing to early elections is tantamount to surrendering to IK because the establishment knows fully well that given huge and unprecedented turnouts on election day they can no longer control electoral outcomes (as was demonstrated in the Punjab by-polls just recently). And PTI's tentacles are now all over the place, it's vote bank is charged and will continue to remain charged till elections. With Punjab, KP and Karachi firmly in its grasp and rural Sindh about to be thrown wide open an early election will yield a landslide for PTI. The REAL question is WHY is the military establishment surrendering?? The answer in a nutshell is 'its the economy, stupid!'. Or to put it plainly we are heading towards DEFAULT given the current and projected gap between our dollar inflows and outflows - (as is being projected by IMF/WB/SBP/MOF). Once all the donor and expected loan proceeds are in the gap is still a HUGE $20B. Pakistan bonds are already trading at junk bond values - close to a whopoing 50% level. This compares to a borrowing rate of 4% just 6 months back before operation regime change. So borrowing is out of the question. And no one will lend anyways. In other words, the default scenario is very REAL! And specially after IMF has spelt it out backed by all the others as well as the markets. The default scenario is not a scenario that the establishment will be able to survive in one piece. The country will spin into utter chaos as vital imports get choked and the rupee starts to become worthless. Inflation will be absolutely out of control. There will be loot, and plunder in urban areas. Public anger will likely get out of control. Try and imagine the impact on rank and file of soldiers, junior officers, clerks and even mid level officers.as their salaries become worthless. IThis is a nightmare no establishment or institution can withstand. And all this within 12 months if status quo is maintained! The ONLY answer to this conundrum lies with IK! (HOW??) Only he has the keys to the 2 sources that can not only fill this gap but also put the country on the road to sustained economic growth thereafter. And those two sources are: Expats and China. The expat factor is well understood and only IK can not only maximize the remittances but get considerable investments through them. On the other hand, the expats will only respond not only once he's back but with a commanding majority. As far as China is concerned they have been backstabbed by the establishment. Chinese, however, need Pakistan as much as Pakistan needs China. They are, and would be, more than willing to rebuild the relationship anew but with a credible IK led government ONLY. New investments and support funds are highly likely. This is the crux of IK's tremendous trump card (other than his charged mass following) as well as the existential dilemma faced by the establishment. Surrender is not only on the cards but INEVITABLE. The only thing the establishment wants in return is safe and honorable passage for its chief (simply because the chief IS the establishment at the moment).... In a nutshell, the establishment's US inspired misadventure has ended in shambles. All its assumptions have been blown to smithereens and has brought the country and the military establishment to the brink of disaster. The only light at the end of the tunnel is to bow down to the will of the people and revert back to IK. The logic of surrender is always cold and rude. It's as simple as that! ANALYSIS: Strong indications now emerging that we are moving towards a resolution. KEY POINTS of the likely plan being negotiated between IK and the establishment (in which Arif Alvi is apparently a key mediator): -Govt to go this month (end of Sep/Oct) -Elections in 3 months (by end Dec, though Najam is pointing to Jan/Feb) -6 month extension of GB by interrim govt (IK not willing to go beyond 6 months). New PM to appoint chief -Nawaz to be let off the hook and allowed to return and campaign with Maryam (ie level playing field) -Efforts in Washington to make IK acceptable while IK softens anti US rhetoric What do the key players get in return? -IK gets: quick elections and to keep the momentum going, has a shot at 2/3rds majority and appoints his own chief -GB's establishment: having botched up BIG TIME (both with IK's vast popularity, polarization and the plummeting out of control economy) he gets an honorable exit as well as face saving with the Americans and the institution. They want to have a shot at keeping both N and AZ politically relevant for the future, although if IK popularity remains then its a long shot. -N league: they are in such a hot soup that they've already signed their death knell in Punjab in the last 6 months. Now via Nawaz they have some chance of political survival. -What the country gets: we start moving towards the end of polarization, and a national security disaster. With that the economy has a chance to stabilize at the earliest. Economically it has become clear that Pakistan is heading towards default unless we get massive dollar injection to the tune of $20B+ after all the donor amounts have been added up. Only IK can deliver these via expat Investments/remittances PLUS China (because the Chinese are miffed at having been stabbed in the back by the establishment and only IK can get them back on the playing field while balancing the US)
