This episode is my favorite of that entire trip to Hollywood. There were so many good one liners, From Big Chief Hog It All, to Fred telling Ethel to have her studio send a special train for a big star like her. Ethel's dingbat father sparring with Fred, all very well written and acted. The background shtick during Ethel's solo performance is very old school comedy and very well executed. There's not a dry spot I the presentation at all.

I love the way Lucy tries to steer the conversation onto a nicer subject but then Mr. Potter and Fred go right back to exchanging insults. LOL

The finale where Ethel is flummoxed is hilarious. When she turns to see who’s behind her, her singing becomes forced and not on pitch. Bravo, Vivian Vance! This is another scene where her brilliance is displayed.

Ethel’s father was played by actor Irving Bacon, born in 1893. Although he often played an “old codger,” in real life he was 17 years younger than William Frawley (Fred), who played his son-in-law here!

I think he also played the owner of that diner, the Ricardos and the Mertzes visited. The one that offered only cheese sandwiches 🥪 to dine on.

@@pacnwguy9056 From their photos, Irving Bacon and Olin Howland looked like they could have been brothers. On IMDb, Howland’s credits show the road stop diner episode, and Bacon’s credits name the 2 episodes listed above. Thanks for the info.

Irving Bacon also played the Justice of the Peace in season'1's "The Marriage License" His wife 'the Mayor' was played by Elizabeth Patterson who would go on to play Mrs. Trumble after Little Ricky was born.

One of my favorite episodes of the entire series. Anyone know what happened to Ethel's mother?

In the episode “Fred and Ethel Fight”, Fred tells Lucy at the end of the episode that Ethel got mad at him again after she found out about the trick with the fake fire and Ethel went home to her mother. That’s the only time I can recall Ethel’s mother ever being mentioned! 🙂

I really never was able to put my finger on what his talents really were...?? He could be funny, but that's all I ever saw.
@retroguy94949 ай бұрын
@@pacnwguy9056 Are you talking about the character Ricky? Or Desi Arnaz? Yes Ricky could be funny. But he was really supposed to be the 'straight man' to Lucy's being funny. His 'talent' in the show was that he was a singer at a nightclub. In real life of course, Desi's main talent was as a singer and Latin American band leader. His acting came second to that of course. But he was also a VERY talented and astute businessman. It's been said that when it came to business, he had the ability to see into the future.
