It's been exactly 3 years since I traded in the MK6 for my current Golf R. In this video, I look back at what the two generations have to offer. Both cars are great, but I am glad I made the switch to the seventh generation Golf.

Really? I prefer the MK7 looks to the MK6, and I'm actually forsure in the minority but the MK5 R32 is slightly better than the MK6 for me. Maybe because I love the VR6 I might just be biased hahaha

At 4:20 are you saying ride height is adjustable using DCC? One recommendation I have when you use your foam cannon is to start from the top and work your way to the bottom (9.22). Finish one section and make sure you foam properly before moving onto the next panel. There are too many missed spots. Also, you should use the knob on the foam cannon to decrease the amount of water and increase the amount of soap so you apply a thicker layer of foam onto your car. This will help minimize scratches and swirl marks which are extremely visible on lapiz blue.

Tony, the ride height shouldn't be adjustable so excuse the confusion, if I stated that. DCC should only be dynamic. From my understanding, the struts stiffen for a sportier ride, vs lowering like true air suspension. Yeah i definitely learned a few things about how to tweak the foam cannon for optimum usage after a few washes. Thanks for your tips!

When you showing the DRL on the 6 I see an orange strip inside your head lights, that is not stock right? And what springs did you use to lower the car? Love it in that blue

Glad i just bought a MK6 R 2 Door last week. the only issue is DSG Auto instead of a Manual. but going Stage 1 ECU + Stage 2 TCU, Exhaust and that is about it for the mechanical changes.

That's not an issue at all in my opinion. I would have kept my MK6 if it were DSG in the states. Enjoy and HODL.

I just bought a 4dr Rising Blue mk6r this last month. Wish it had the DSG like my k04 GTI, but I'll find a shop that can do the conversion for me. Just can't get into the mk7 no matter how often I see them on the road.

in the uk the mk6 seems to be a rare car and the low mileage ones are going for more money than than the early mk7s already i know because ive been looking for the last 12 months and have yet to see one in the spec i want come up for sale, gotta be a black 3 door with dsg and decent mileage

Great video and very helpful! I notice almost all 6R's I've seen have a 6-button radio, but yours and one other I've seen has an 8-button radio more similar to the 7R. Is that an option, or a retrofit and if so, what is it? Thanks!

Hey man, thank you for the feedback. That unit is actually an OEM unit with the bigger screen that also supported my backup camera. It is the RCD510 which has the bigger screen, but not navigation. The RNS510 looks identical, but has navigation.

@@atomicpunk993 Very interesting that you’re considering the 6R actually. Bummer you couldn’t have gotten mine. It was pristine. As much as I love the 6R for the looks, and sentimental reasoning - I don’t regret trading it for the DSG. If the 6R came in DSG like in Europe, I would have kept for a long time.

@@ilimit Yeah yours looked perfect and is exactly what I'd be looking for. Might not even find one I want. I don't regret getting the DSG because I would have always wondered. I started out just looking to swap it for a manual, then ran across a few 6R's and thought hmm. My daily is a 20th AE GTI (Jazz Blue) and I just find it way more engaging (fun), and maybe the 6R is best of both worlds...? The 7R is superior by nearly every metric, and as quick and refined as it is, it pretty much stays in the garage. Cheers!

Thanks! The seat covers I got from sheercomfort.com. The spoiler is a replica, so I am not sure if you want to go that route. But I purchased it from AliExpress. You can find them on eBay - just more expensive.

I have a 2011 Mk6 Golf R with DSG. Leather Interior, Dynamic Chassis Control, 19” Talledega’s, RNS510 head unit which I’m about to change to a RCD410 AppleCarplay/AndroidAuto unit. Deciding if I’ll get a Stage 1 tune. Update : I now have 19” Mk7 R Cadiz Wheels with 235/35/19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres (I had the same spec tyres on the Talledega’s), a Superpro 26mm adjustable rear sway bar, Superpro adjustable rear end links, a Hard Racing front strut bar, DBA T2 slotted rotors all round, DBA Street Performance front brake pads, ACE Ceramic rear pads, an ANTZ Cold Air Intake and an Underground Performance custom ECU/TCU tune. Now producing 262awhp. Head unit changed to RCD440 Pro.

Mk6 GTI owner here, and the Mk6 design is my favorite. I wish VW had given us the DSG option on the 6R like they did everywhere else. Will you be trading in your 7R for an 8R?

Devin - I totally agree with your statement. MK6 R with the DSG would have been great here in the states. I don't think I'll be upgrading to the next generation. What about you ?

@@ilimit I want to upgrade but I want to see what VW's plans are. I saw a Facebook post of a new turbocharged VR6 engine called the EA390 and I want to see if VW will put that engine in the R, since the other competitors (next gen Z, Type R and STI) are rumored to have 400hp. I don't want to be like those BMW X3 M40i owners, where BMW upped the power fairly significantly for the second model year, leaving the first model year owners screwed.

That's all I want... a VR6T. But I'm pretty sure the MK8 R is already set in stone with another inline 4. Maybe there will be an exclusive model 🤷‍♂️

@@ilimit Yeah. I think almost everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting to see if the VR6T will come. Their rumored R Plus is said to be a hybrid and reach 400, but who knows. I try to stay on top of whatever news comes out.

Great video! My 6 R had the four doors, like your 7. Much easier for driver and passengers alike! Had to trade in my R a year ago due to bad knee. Miss it a lot. Loved the stock sound (disabled soundaktor). Liked the styling and ended up getting a Mk 6 Jetta Sportwagen for the extra length and DSG. Hoping to retro the front bumper, side skirts and headlights soon. May even get it wrapped in a Rising Blue, someday. Already added paddle shifters and thicker leather wrapped covering on the steering wheel. Will do some other interior and exterior to make it look like the 6 R. Wish the adaptive headlights weren't so expensive to retrofit. Ah well. Great look and comparison video! Happy driving!

Hey man can you tell me the brand and specs on the Exhaust system u used on the mk6? Also you recommend not going past stage 1 apr on the stock Clutch?

Paublo, I went full turboback from 42 Draft Designs. Sound wise, it was nice, but too much drone. I moved on to CTS Turbo catback exhaust and it also sounded nice, but I was still getting drone. I ended up putting the stock catback with 42DD downpipe and it was a much more tamed sound. I had clutch issues overall. Stage 2 ended up being too much for stock clutch, even at APR Stage 1. The Clutchmaster FX350 did not last very long and ended up slipping. If the car was DSG in the states, I probably would have kept it much longer as I prefer the MK6 body style and color.

No problem dude. I would shop around now to see which company offers the cheaper option. IMO, you can’t go wrong with 42DD, CTS, IE and of course APR. So many options out there for downpipes. Exhaust options are different story depending on what sound you want. Unfortunately 42DD did not offer the vband option when I purchased so it was more of a hassle to install and Mate to other systems. You might want to consider vband connections to make life easier. I have a 2013 rising blue mk6R 4 door and am going through this exact condundrum. I know that I will miss the 6mt if I go to the dsg. And if i decide to stay with the 6mt then it really isnt worth the upgrade imo from manual golf to manual golf. Thinking about maybe opting for an s4/s5 but not sure. also kind of like the VW arteon i think they are pretty underrated, its like a baby audi a7. lots to think about lol. all in all i think if would want to go for a mk7.5R for the digital displays and led headlights etc. Also I would totally miss having a sunroof like I have in the mk6!!! i wish the newer gen had the options the euros did so bad lol. sorry for ranting lol

also i believe the DGS 6 spd in the Mk 6 was more reliable then the Mk 7's 7 Spd DSG. from what i have been seeing around the place.

Mine is the MK7 pre-facelift so it is still running the DQ250. Not sure about the 381? found in the newer MK7.5 🤷‍♂️ probably just needs a TCU tune just like mine.

I use seat covers over the leather. Some might not be comfortable with that - because why would we not enjoy our leather seats, right? Also if you want to keep your leather and plastic in good same - we also use 303 aerospace protectant.

It's sad that VW decided to drop the 2-door offering for the Mk7. This goes for all cars of course but especially hot-hatches; the 2-door version just looks miles better than the elongated "crammed in there" look you get with 4 doors.

the mk7 is ugly as sin to me but has the superior engine. Mk6 will always be the best looking golf. There's also a ton of aftermarket support for performance.

I'm not a fan of the mk7 either. It's why i bought a 2012 GTI with DSG. Might add an mk6R someday. I ended up buying a 2013 Golf R 4 door in Rising Blue in January of 2023. Have since added Neuspeed Rse10 18x8.5 wheels and a Magnaflow Exhaust.

It’s funny, I have a mk6, and for sure I love it but I always find myself jealous of the sleek, straight lines of the mk7’s lights. You’re right about performance, though, one thing I don’t feel jealous of is the difference in off-the-line performance of the two models considering how easy it is coax more power out of the mk6’s drivetrain. Either way, whatever your preference, I think we can all agree that the mk8 sucks. *Uglier* than sin, shitty touchscreens replacing everything, even more price markup…it seems likely that the peak of this model has already passed.

The Performance boost Gauge in the radio Is not Accurate....... on the MK7 You need a boost tap and a Boost gauge.

My 2012 GTI has 145k miles with the original DSG. Went with an APR TCU tune when I went k04. No issues at all.
