Rick, I take lessons, but I augment my lessons with your stuff. You teach in such a way, it's really easy to understand and fun. You answer the simple question that most would think are obvious, except they're not obvious to us newbies. Love the channel, thank you so much for the content

I know some music theory, but never heard of the cycle of 3rd until I watched your video last year. I have seen other creators talk about 11th note/chord, but was never sure of what they were talking about. I am picking up the guitar after decades of not practicing. These videos are a huge help. Thank you so much

Oh well!! I'm here now 😂 love the channel! Liked, subscribed and have bought the online version of the book. Thanks for all your lessons!

I always thought Music Theory was beyond my comprehension, but it's amazing what clarity it's brought now that you've explained it to me. If you know the fretboard, and you know the intervals then a whole new world of playing opens up. It was honestly fun enough to playing along to all my favorite bands, but I might actually start writing my own songs now. Doesn't seem so impossible. Really can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge, and explaining it simply enough that I could grasp it. You rock!

Your book was a Christmas gift to myself. As for the homework, haha... Dmajor9 = D, F# ,A, C#, E..... Bmajor9= B, D#, F#, A#, C#........Eadd9 = E, G#, B, F#.....Abmajor9 = Ab, C, Eb, G, Bb......Gadd9= G, B, D, A..... Considering how long it took me to type that out, I may have been able to watch another lesson. Cheers!

Came across your Circle of 3rds video, so simple, so clear and consequently very educational. I have "plunked" on the guitar for years but to move forward in my playing I need to have some theory behind me, as a support/foundation. Your circle of 3rds and now this video has been brilliant for me. I have subscribed, will study your other videos and start practicing again. Many thanks for your clarity and skill as a teacher.

Ricky...thank you for the video and homework! Ok..let me try. First..all of the chords have a 2nd interval...in essence. The Dsus2 has a Root, 2nd and 5th interval. The Bmaj9 has a Root, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th intervals. The Eadd9 has the Root, 3rd, 5th and 9th intervals. The Asus2 has the Root, 2nd and 5th intervals. The Gadd9 has the Root, 3rd, 5th and 9th intervals. Question: with the 2nd and 9th being the same in essence, why wouldn't the intervals be described as R, 2nd, 5th and 9 for the Gadd9 for instance? I am looking forward to your reply and continued lessons!! I appreciate your teaching and willingness to share your knowledge!

Dsus2= D E G Bmaj9= B C# D# F# A# Eadd9= E F# G# B Asus2= A B D Gadd9= G A B D I hope that I did this right. If not, please let me know.... Learning theory is incredibly important to me.... I wanna make sure I’m doing it right and what I may need to fixed if I’m not... I was unsure about changing Key for each chord but when I attempted doing it in Key of C it didn’t seem to make sense. I love the idea of homework, because writing things down and physical engagement in what your teaching helps cement & retain that information. Thanks again, Lloyd
1. Correct 2. I see you're trying to make the Major 3rd from R to 3 by flattening the B. If we think of BMaj9 as chord I in the key of B you get B - D# - F# - A#- C# 3. Correct 4. Correct 5. Correct Good work!

2 Questions.... Does it work the same way for Minor Chords & If you play a C + 9 (For example) do you have to add the D (9) from the compound Octave or could you simply add the D (2)....?
@alangordon47932 жыл бұрын
Good question. I would say you can play the 2nd (D) but the theory would take the D from the compound octave, the D an octave up. The theory allows you to name the chord correctly. That's what I would say, maybe Rick will correct if I'm wrong.

So in music, the distance between 1 and 3 and thus the function of 3 - 1 = 3. From a maths perspective, that's artistic license! Now, I'm putting my answer here, So that it is low enough that I won't spoil the answers for anyone else ..even though my answers may be wrong as I'm new at this: Dsus2 = 9,10 Bmaj9 = 7,9 Eadd9 = 3,5,7,9 Asus2 = 13,14,17 Gadd9 = 5,7,9 (nine is already added by definition)

Good stuff. Question is.... How can you play 7 notes in one chord on guitar?
@rickysguitar2 жыл бұрын
+Mike you can’t! You have to omit notes. What’s more if you think about CAGED chords the D shape only uses 4 strings so you have omit non essential notes! It’s a challenge but it’s great for developing your ear
@mike51772 жыл бұрын
@@rickysguitar Yes that I understand, but the 13ths? Which would you omit?
@rickysguitar2 жыл бұрын
@@mike5177 The first suspects are the perfect 5th and the perfect 4th (11th). You could get rid of the 9th (I like that colour so try to keep it in) The root note is sometimes good to remove especially if the bass player is taking care of that. You need the 3rd for tonality, the 7th to bridge into the compound octave. The main thing is to be careful with 1/2 steps as they "rub". But then again...I quite like that too. How do you cook spaghetti?

Why was the CAGED system invented? How does ANY chord move, if it wishes to, along the CAGED pathway; because 5 notes in CAGED IS a route by defination.
@rickysguitar2 жыл бұрын
Jazz guitarist Joe Pass is attributed as discovering the CAGED system. It transposes up the neck. It's essential for all guitarists to learn
