I think the biggest distinction for me is what my mental focus is on at 40 or 28. 40 for me is about portraits - or faces and details. One particular thing catches your eye, and you get it. I check what I can leave out of the frame. 28 for me is about landscapes - or spaces and context. The whole vibe grabs you, and you work the scene to get as much of it as possible. I check what I can get into the frame. You can do either with both of focal lengths, but I feel it's about preparing your headspace. Much like how putting on a uniform mentally prepares you for school.

I've been going back and forth about the gr iii vs the x and this video was super helpful as a beginner! Knowing how to get the same picture with the different cameras (esp since there's only one variable) made me realize how I'm probably not as comfortable right now being so close to subjects/obejcts and where I would naturally tend to take photos from. iirc most smart phone cameras are at 28mm so while the quality is not the same, I can practice with that distancing (without zooming ofc) and see which focal length works better. Thank you!

I’ve read that about 1.5/1.6 zoom with the phone is really similar to 40mm so you can try both and see which you like better.

That was a wonderful presentation. I have the gr3, but that 40mm view and not having to get so close to people sounds really nice.

In my GR3, I set U1 to 28, U2 to 35 crop, and U3 to 50 crop. I generally just stick to 28 though because it’s easier to nail focus at 28mm.

I still have my 8.1 megapixel Ricoh gr digital camera from 2006. I mostly have it on the black and white setting. It has a 5.9mm f2. 4 28mm equivalent lens. Perfect stealth camera. I use auto focus not snap shot. I also have a Ricoh automatic watch from the 1990s.

I just bought my gr3x. I do find that the area where my thumb rest and the top right corner of the screen gets hot after leaving the camera on for 10min. Do you experience the same issue?

Hi Lukasz, have you tried out the new 'snap focus priority mode' that came with the recent firmware upgrade? Do you think that it would be a possible alternative to pre-focussing? Also, would you consider using 'highlight priority' metering mode for those evening shots with the pools of reflected light?
@EYExplore2 жыл бұрын
Although I've installed the firmware I haven't tried it yet. I have been using the 3.5m zone on the GR3x. I'd say it's the ideal zone for a full frame 40mm FOV.

Have you tried long press snap? Killer feature for me in my GR3.

Thanks for the video. The tips about the length was really helpful in what to look for since over the weekend I've been looking heavily into street camera, but can't justify spending for some of these newer ones. I was wondering if you could recommend an older inexpensive one that has similar features ie: min shutter speed on aperture priority, max/min ISO, simple lens (though I have not decided if I want a removable lens or not) and not a lot of features that a hobbyist would ever use. Thank you

Do you ever find yourself missing the viewfinder or not really?
@EYExplore2 жыл бұрын
Only when it's extremely bright outside and I have trouble seeing the screen, but this is pretty rare. In general, when I use my GR, I go with the flow that it provides. I like being able to wave it around at arm's length and use it an extension of the hand. When I use a camera with a viewfinder, it's like an extension of the eye. Both have their place and are fun in their own ways. :)

I'd be scared to just point my camera so close to a person the way he took a shot of that dude eating at 3:26 because I for sure don't want some random stranger pointing his camera at me.

how can u say that it's for beginners when the camera cost 1K
@EYExplore2 жыл бұрын
I mean, that doesn't seem relevant. How rich someone is has nothing to do with their photographic skill. On workshops I've done I've met plenty of beginners with cameras that cost 10k (and more when add in lenses). But sure, if budget is tight and you don't know if you'll be doing photography for years and years to come, then it's best to just start with something else. To me, the price of the camera is not intrinsic to the camera and how we shoot it. It's possible to get the same camera second-hand in a few years for a lower price, for example. Yet, even if the price changes, the camera will be the same. That's what I focus on. :)

I'm sorry to disagree. Myself I am not a beginner and even though it is a great camera I find the dials and menus kinda weird, confusing.
@m47d48xt2 жыл бұрын
Have you tried using the custom modes? It means studying the manual but I have found them useful. I frequently forget when I am walking around how to change a setting and I also frequently forget to check the settings before I take a shot, so I mess up a lot of pictures! When I bought a GR3x I took some pictures on a sunny day, fiddling with the settings till I found something I liked. I saved it to the U1 custom mode as 'Sunny' and now, when its a sunny day I just dial up U1 and try not to touch anything while taking pictures. If I do, I turn it off U1 then back again so it restores something that works. There's U2 and U3 of course for other common situations
