Riddell Axiom & SpeedFlex - An honest comparison

I have an Axiom and it’s amazing. There’s absolutely no discomfort at all. the new padding material is so much better than the speed flex liner which kinda pulls on your hair so the axiom definitely wins in comfortability. The FOV in the axiom is amazing. It looks like i don’t even have a helmet on there’s absolutely nothing imparing my vision. To whoever has the money to buy one and the means to do so, I Highly highly recommend.

i absolutely LOVE my Axiom. nearly no break-in and comes fitted exactly to your head being that you have to get it scanned. as a tight end on a run first team using a Schutt F7, i experienced a lot of pain and discomfort when blocking being that when you block you typically use your forehead and the axiom is unmatched in that aspect, no discomfort whatsoever! the technology is the cherry on top in my opinion

Some schools have axioms on release (or right after it). Most schools still don’t have Speedflexes after about 8 years.

I bought it for my son, he fell in love with it the moment he out it on his head he wasn't sure about the look before he got it but after he put it on he's says he like it more than his flex. if you can get your hands on it do it its well well worth it excited to see how he says it feels playing in a game.

I got my Axiom for about 900 bucks and I love it. It's by far the most comfortable helmet I've ever had and gives the best field of view. I'm a runningback, so I definitely feel the difference with how the Axiom absorbs hits compared to the Speedflex, I get way less headaches and take hits better while wearing the Axiom. I'd recommend it to anyone able to get it.

Just got a speed flex and that specific helmet feels very tight, even when I take the air out. Riddell hit my coach up and we are getting 20 new Axiom helmets and we just got fitted for them it was cool because we had to wear a mask.

I was talking to one of my buddies just yesterday about his new axiom. He said its super comfy, but not that much of an upgrade from the speedflex. He also said his biggest issue with the helmet was the visor, since if he removed it, he got hit in the face. He said he was able to fit his whole hand in the gap (and he's a pretty big guy.) And of course since he doesnt remove the visor it gets scratched up during practices, making it hard for him to see.

It’s probably gonna be one of if not Riddels most iconic helmet not just because of how it looks but how it feels it’s definitely feels more safe and feels more secure and it feels like I haven’t had to really mess with anything at all compared to the speed flex or the speed. I wish I could come on the show and help y’all out like show y’all what I mean by it from a person who always has his fitted

I bought my son one before this season started and he loves it. He previously had the speedflex and there is no comparison. With the speedflex, he felt most hits, especially head to head. With the axiom, he doesn’t feel the hits anywhere close to what he did with the speedflex. It is expensive, but I’m investing in my sons safety. 4:07

I have one it’s amazing the only problem I have had with it all season is during games you really need a towel because of how slick the inside is it becomes uncomfortable after wearing it for a long time. None the less best helmet ever

I coach for a HS team that had about half of our guys (30) wear Axioms this past season. The rest were in SpeedFlex's which we've been using for awhile. Both are very good helmets. I'm not sure if the features of the Axioms are compelling enough to justify the cost for most teams or not. We definitely struggled with visors fogging and visibility in rain & cold. For the most part, we weren't comfortable having players out there without the visors - the hole opening is too big & as he says, feels like they're too exposed without them. We will need to replace quite a few visors that are scratched up enough to be annoying...so more additional cost. The data from the helmet sensors was interesting but not especially useful/helpful. But it wasn't all of our players & for one season and I very much support all efforts to track impact data. We did have a few concussions in the Axioms but they seemed generally comparable to recent seasons (but again, small sample size). One other thing - I wasn't especially impressed with the fit of the Axioms compared to the SpeedFlex. It might've been an issue with our kids having longer hair when they were scanned than when they played. It wasn't a bad fit or anything, but "custom fit" didn't appear to be noticeably better and I think it's possible the flexibility of adding or removing air with the SpeedFlex might be better. Again I'll say that both are great helmets, I have no reservations about recommending either. We're going to give it another year - we will stick with the Axioms we current have and have the seniors helmets re-fit for younger players. I think we are going to purchase some additional SpeedFlex to replace some aged-out helmets rather than adding more Axioms.

I bought the axiom through my high school so I am a corner of it the only thing I have to say, is it heavy on your neck and if you wear a headband or something like that because very tight on your head when you put the helmet on.

We got our 10 year old son an Axiom and it just came in 2 days ago. They just scanned him like the adults. Was told by the riddell rep that for youth as long as their head doesn’t out grow the shell you can rescan and send it in to resize the helmet.

I can say that I have bad both of these helmets and I love the axiom a lot more because of the visibility and lightness compared to the speed flex on my axiom I had the stainless steel face mask and it was very good and I also love how it comes with a visor but don’t because you can get different tints and color visors on the axiom

Seen a guy 3D printing facemasks for the axiom that has eye guards and a top bar and even a double top bar at the that isn’t attached at the top corners looks just like the speed flex facemask SF-2eg-Sw Riddell needs to check this out because without a visor it’s very open

Thanks for the video. My son has worn SpeedFlex, Vicis Zero2, and last year Axiom. He didn’t complain about either of the previous two, but immediately felt the Axiom was considerably more comfortable. Not even close. Also, the field of view is even better than Vicis. Everyone who can should be wearing an Axiom!

Next season will be my second year with the helmet. It was amazing last year in all areas. When it’s cold out it is hard to put on and it has to warm up for a minute before you can hit hard with it. I just got it back from reconditioning and I am not impressed with the repainting or replacement of the padding that they did. I still have most of the deep scratches from last year and my chinstrap is all chewed up still

I’ve tried on an Axiom before and I play receiver. The helmet has a very good amount of field of view but it just look big like I have an f7 and it fits perfect. The Axiom is a cool helmet but for a receiver and a corner I think we should stick with the f7 and speedflex

Just switched to a axiom I had a f7 a really big change I’m still not use to the feeling because f7s are lighter and the visors for the f7s are bigger so I couldn’t put it in the axiom so I couldn’t wair one for a few games

My son's Axiom helmet just came in today. We ordered it months ago from the school after going and looking at the different helmets that the Riddell rep had. He was at the school picking up the schools' helmets for reconditioning and he had his son's Axiom helmet there for us to look at. And the fact that the Riddell rep had gotten the Axiom meant something to my husband and I. My son played JV for the first time this past year and there was a boy on the team that went out for several games after getting a concussion in the second game of the season. He's doing fine but we decided when the school said that we could buy the Axiom, we went with it. He hasn't played with it at all and he says it feels a little tight on the sides of his face right now. The coach let him bring it home to wear around and give the foam (and my son) a chance to adjust. We don't have any regrets about getting it.

For the Axiom, the visor that can be used depends on the facemask that he uses. I would say to make sure that he has the best facemask for the position he plays, and base your visor choice off of it. Good luck!

The open visor means that there is no visor, and the face would be very exposed. Closed visor means that the visor is in the helmet.

Just a question about the liners. I have a Speedflex and am considering buying an Axiom. My fear is that the visor will break or be damaged in a good, strong 1v1 because the facemask is missing the top rail. Does anyone already have experience with this?

Given how different the Axiom's design is compared to the SpeedFlex, I hope Riddell would give a complete refresh to their collectible helmet lineup. Riddell offers SpeedFlex "Authentic" replicas for all NFL teams and only some from NCAA. Every other collectible-- full-size replica, mini, and "tracker"/pocket, are based on the Speed design.

The Axiom might be the best out there, in terms of visibility. Without the visor it only gives slightly more visibility than with it, since the eye area is already so open. Hope this helps you out!

In respect to removing the visor is their concern with increased eye injury or do you believe it will increase for those wearing the helmet with out the visor..? It's hard to find an image(s) or feed back on current players wearing the axiom with no shield...2nd question, from a WR perspective do you know if choosing this face bar 2BC-TI OR 2BC-HP-TI would take away field vision with the additional bar above the nose, in contrast to the standard bar do you think it would decrease the chance of a fist or hand entering the helmet and hitting the eye..? thanks in advance
