I don't read the scene that way at all. The Lord Marshal didn't choose to die by Riddick's hand. He tried to make the choice that he believed would lead to his survival, but got outplayed by Riddick. Vaako moves in for the kill, the Lord Marshal, in a desperate attempt to escape, projects himself to the nearest available weapon, which Riddick perfectly predicted he would do, based on what he has seen of the Lord Marshal so far and then perfectly timed his dagger to land the second the Lord Marshal arrived, leaving him with no time to project again. And the reason I believe this is because he went for the weapon. If he wanted to die at Riddick's hand, he wouldn't have gone for a weapon to defend himself, yet he did. This, to me, is the action of a man who is making a desperate bid to fight for his life, but got outplayed by the second opponent whose whereabouts he had neglected to keep track of.

This is actually the original theatrical version from 2004 which was PG-13, which was also the version shown on cable TV in the early 2000's. The DVD & Bluray box sets are the unrated versions where Lord Marshall just says "give me your soul" and Riddick says "F*** you" as he uppercuts him

If you look at Riddick's face at the start of the fight, just after he gets up from being sent flying into the column, he's proper *scared*, because he can't even land a blow on the Lord Marshal. Hard to see because Diesel's face is visible only for glimpses, but the expression is there.
