I originally posted the puzzle with Day 3 being "OR Friday." Here's a little problem for you: try to work that case out. (It's actually significantly easier than "AND Friday.") Here's the original video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaGqfHSJi7Nqd5Y *I was half tempted to say I intended this mistake--like some KZbin math channels say each video has an intentional mistake. But I don't make excuses and I would rather be honest with you. I hope you'll grade me on a curve and give me some partial credit for my answer. (I did remember to spell thief correctly!) This was a hard one for me, so I know it will be hard for others, and I hope to share my own learning experience with mathematics so others will be inspired to keep trying.

Warm up is Saturday, because the remaining 6 days are 2 times 3 symmetric cases contradicting the uniqueness of the solution. If 'Day 1' and 'Day 3' are both lies he tells truth on 2 days each week which he don't. If 'Day 1' is true it must correspond to Wednesday or Friday, but in both cases 'Day 2' will be true. Hence 'Day 3' is true, and it must correspond to Monday or Tuesday. 'Day 2' is true if 'Day 3' is Monday, so Tuesday is the only possible correct answer, and can be confirmed.

@sporksto43725 жыл бұрын
Really? This is 10 times easier than any geometrical problem. All you need to do in order to find the answer is to assume on day 1, 2 or 3 respectively, he tells the truth. After assuming on any day he tells the truth, you ought to make sure that other 2 days corroborate the day you assumed to be the true. If you ever find any contradiction out, that means your assumption in the first place was wrong, try another day. By this solution, you can easily get yourself the answer.

I found it easier, after determining that day 2 is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday, to write down what days of the week days 1 and 3 could be. Then you've got two lists for each statement: the days it could have been made, and the days the truth day could be if it were true. There's no overlap for statement 1, but Tuesday is in both lists for statement 3.

But day 3 statement says he has to tell truth on Wednesday or Friday, we have contradiction. Therefore he tells truth on day 3. This means day 3 is Monday or Tuesday. If it was Monday, then day 2 statement would've created a contradiction. In conlusion: Thief tells truth on Tuesday. I have really enjoyed that one. I got it right without even writing down anything. @otherwords13755 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you just need three steps and some change: 1) know that "true day" needs to be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday -- because at most 1 of day 1, day 3 can be true. 2) Know that whatever your "true day" is, you need to construct a sequence such that start-day + 1 isn't Thur, Sat, or Sun and 3) either start-day + 2 *or* start-day -2 = "true day." This is a system of equations that nearly finishes the job for us; the only possible sequences that satisfy all three conditions are (Monday, Tuesday, Weds) and (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday).But we can rule out (M,Tues,Weds) because Weds = true day implies M = not true day while the falsity of the M's claim simultaneously implies M or T = true day implies W = not true day. Contradiction. So (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday); QED.

@@feras5017 because, if he is lying when he says "I lie on Monday and Tuesday" then one of those two days must be his truthful day... If he is also lying when he says "I lie on Wednesday and Friday" then one of those days must also be a truthful day. Since we know he tells the truth exactly one day per week, then he cannot be lying on both day 1 and day 3, since that would mean he would have two truthful days. @FurryGaru5 жыл бұрын
Did this a different way. First worked out that Day 1 and Day 3 could not be true on the days mentioned in the respective statements, as the statements would be contradictory - you can’t truthfully say you are lying. This ruled out Day 1 as Mon, Tue or Wed. At this point, I would bring in the statement about one of Day 1 or Day 3 being true, meaning Day 2 is a lie which immediately rules out Day 1 being Fri or Sat. We also know our truth would have to be on one of the days mentioned on Day 1 or Day 3. For a Day 1 Thu to contain the truth, then we would have to tell the truth about Friday’s lie on Saturday, which is not possible. This leaves us with Day 1 being on Sunday. And which day is the truth? Well, it could only be Day 3. Day 1 is impossible as it is Sunday, Day 2 being on a Monday is a lie, and Day 3 (Tuesday) must be true because we already know that we do not lie on both Monday and Tuesday. That’ll do, anyway. Makes more sense to me than trying to figure out what Prash was saying. 😳

The puzzle doesn't make sense tho. The statements on day 1 and 3 both can't be lies because then he would tell the truth on two days of the week each. Therefore both days have to be days where he speaks truth which again goes against the initial statement. Edit: You should've kept the "OR Friday" in the statement like you said in your comment.

1. Day 1 or day 3 has to be the truth day, and it has to be M, T, W, or F (otherwise, both are truth days) 2. If the truth day is listed as in day 3, and is immediately followed by a day listed in day 4, then day 1 and day 2 are both truth days. Same goes for a day listed in day 1, being immediately preceded by a day listed in day 2 (making day 2 and day 3 truth days). This eliminates M, W, and F. Tuesday is the truth day.

I solved it in 1 hour, in a different way One of the statement that he said in they 1 and 3 most be a lie so the truth day must be : Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday. The lying days MOST be Sunday Thursday and Saturday. Because of that the second day can't be on this day (because his statment)! So the only option for 3 consecutive day in a week are Sunday Monday Tuesday (Thursday can't be the 2 day!) We know that Sunday must be a lying day and that leavs us only with Monday and Tuesday. If Monday that is the second day of the 3 days is the truth day it doesn't correspond with his statement that " today is Torsday" ect so he MUST be lying on Monday and that leavs only Thusday as the truth day( it was very difficult to say it in English I am NOT an English speaker as you notice 😊)
@davidyoung63315 жыл бұрын
It depends whether a "half lie" is a lie or not. "He tells a lie when he says (on day 1) that he lies on Monday and Tuesday." That would mean, to some people, that he speaks the truth on both Monday and Tuesday. (which he cannot) So telling the "half lie" (he tells a lie on Monday but he does tell the truth on Tuesday) put a bit of a "cook" in the puzzle.
@hallowizer4405 жыл бұрын
Wow, I solved this using a completely different method. I narrowed down the possible day 1's to Sunday and Thursday, then I narrowed down the truth day to Tuesday in the case that day 1 was Sunday. Then, I checked it using Thursday as day 1, and it didn't work, interesting that that was still the answer.
@liliacfury5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think the problem can be solved. Day one can either be truth or lie, if it’s a lie, then on Monday and Tuesday he tells the truth. But the riddle only says only one day the dude tells the truth, so that means that statement will always be false if he’s lying that day, so day one he has to be telling the truth. But then the same thing goes for problem 3, so that means on day one and day three he has to be honest, but because there’s 7 days in a week they can’t be the same day. That means he has to be telling the truth on two days of the week, but the riddle says only one day of the week is the man truthful. Since the riddle contradict itself it cannot be right. That’s my thoughts anyway.
@patricksheldon58597 ай бұрын

On the main puzzle, you can notice that you must choose one of the four days mentioned in day 1 and day 3 (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday) because if you choose another one, no matter where you put it, you will end up with 2 truth days, because both say the thief lies on those 4 days. So you must pick one of the 4 days mentioned in days 1 and 3. For example: if you choose the truth day as Friday, then day 3 will be a lie, because you are saying the truth in that day, and if you put that Friday on the first day, then the thief is saying the truth, because he lied on Monday and Tuesday, as he is meant to lie 6 days of the week. and this will happen also if we use Wednesday the same way. If we use Monday or Tuesday as truth days, then we should put them on the third day, so that the first day will be a lie and the third day will be the truth. The opposite. The statement of the second day is the one which will help us to find the correct answer. If we used Friday or Wednesday as truth days, then the day 1 will be true and also day 2 because the next will be either Thursday or Saturday. Then Friday and Wednesday are excluded. If we use Monday on the third day, the day one (Saturday of the past week) will be a lie, but the next day (day 2) will be a truth because it is Sunday. So Tuesday can be the unique answer for the truth day. Because if we put it on the third day , as aforementioned, day one ( Sunday of the past week) will be lie because the thief is saying the truth on Tuesday, day 2 will be a lie, because the next day after Sunday is Monday, and the Thursday of truth (third day) he will be telling the truth (lol), because he lied on Wednesday and Friday. 🤥

Before watching the video here. Starting day: Sunday. Truth day: Tuesday. Method: Testing for the 4 possibilities (LLL,TLL,LTL,LLT) and spotting contradictions while testing on where to start and where the truth day it is, until I find a match with no contradictions

I came to the same answer you did using the same method, but it was awfully confusing watching you do it since you had it listed day 2, day 1, day 3 as opposed to day 1, day 2, day 3.

I solved it, then watched the video and was a little confused, also thought that I got wrong answer, and then boom. I have correct one :3

Some of you may be wondering, “Why would this man tell the truth on Tuesdays but not on other days?” This question must make your soul mad. Let me put that madness to rest by quenching your thirst for the answer. His name is Timothy. It all started when he married the love of his life, Darlene. The two of them were so in love that others found them insufferable. They could never bring themselves to separate except when it was absolutely necessary, and when they did, they were inconsolable. They simply could not live without each other. They had a daughter named Darlene Jr. She was beautiful. For Timothy and Darlene, all was right in the world. Until one fateful day, when Darlene started coughing. In a panic, Timothy drove his wife to the hospital. He ran to the front office, carrying her in his arms, skipping all the people in line. When they finally made it to a bed, the doctor diagnosed her with cancer. He explained that she would have to do chemotherapy, which would require her to isolate. Timothy shuttered at the thought of spending such a long time without his wife, and he resolved at that moment that he would trust no one with his wife but himself. Timothy had started college with the intention of becoming a doctor, but two weeks into the first semester, he decided that it was too hard, so he became a cheesemaker instead. However, during those two weeks, he had learned something valuable that he believed would qualify him to operate on his wife: The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. As long as he knew that, he felt confident that he could operate on his wife. However, in spite of this wisdom, he failed. His wife died in his arms, and he was devastated. After Darlene’s funeral, Timothy sat alone in the chapel. A woman named Cheryl saw him, walked up to him, and put her arm around him. “You know,” she whispered, “I’ve had a crush on you since elementary school. Would marrying me cheer you up?” Timothy had no interest in Cheryl, but he just didn’t have the stamina to say no, so he just sat there silently. “Oh, Timmy,” she said, “Can you imagine letting your daughter grow up without a mother?” A look of horror appeared on Timothy’s face. Little Darlene Jr was the only piece of Darlene left in the world, and he couldn’t bare the thought of letting her grow up without a mother. He agreed to Cheryl’s proposal, and they were married that evening. Just after the ceremony, four little kids came up to Timothy to hug him. Cheryl, seeing the confusion in Timothy’s face, explained, “These are my four children.” As it turned out, this wasn’t the first time Cheryl had taken advantage of men mourning the loss of their wives. In fact, it was the fifth time, and each of the first four husbands had one previous child. None of them loved Cheryl, but they all wanted their children to have mothers. Once each man found out what Cheryl was doing, they divorced her, and in order to make it quick, they conceded their children. Timothy despised Cheryl, but he loved his daughter so much that he chose to stay married to Cheryl so that Darlene Jr could have a mother and a father. This did not stop things from becoming heated. For two years, there was contention and contempt every single day. Everyone was miserable. Finally, Darlene Jr came up with a solution. She suggested that each evening, they would go around in a circle and say what they like about a specific family member. Since there were seven people in the family and seven days in the week, they agreed that each person would have one day of the week where people would say what they liked about them. They arranged the schedule by age. Cheryl got Sunday (because she was a cougar and was older than Timothy), Timothy got Monday, Darlene Jr got Tuesday, and the other four children, who aren’t major enough characters to get names, got Wednesday through Saturday. That first Sunday, when it was Timothy’s turn to say what he loved about Cheryl, he froze. He couldn’t think of a single thing. He thought about telling Cheryl what he really thought of her because he had never lied in his life. (Well, that’s not entirely true. He did lie to his gym teacher once in junior high after running one less lap than he was supposed to, but he didn’t care enough about any of the people there to feel bad about it.) But when he looked at his daughter, he thought, “I need to lie. For her.” He then mumbled, “I like your hair.” He couldn’t sleep that night knowing that he had lied in front of his daughter. The following Monday was even tougher. As much as Timothy hated Cheryl, he hated himself even more for marrying her. He couldn’t bear to lie about himself in front of his daughter, but he also didn’t want to show weakness, so he mumbled, “I’m pretty cool.” Once again, he felt terrible. But Tuesday was beautiful. There were many things he loved about Darlene Jr. When the time came, he spent ten minutes listing compliments he had for her. He would’ve kept going, but Cheryl felt so insulted that he was saying so much about Darlene and so little about her that she shut him down. You would think Timothy wouldn’t have as much trouble saying what he liked about the other four children, but just the fact that he met them on the same day that the wife he loved died and met the wife he hated made it very hard to think positively about them. He decided that he needed to lie every night. Every night, that is, except Tuesday night. At first, he only lied in the evening, but over time, he got to where he dreaded every night that wasn’t Tuesday night so much that thinking about lying had a complicated psychological effect on him. One Thursday, he noticed that he felt awkward telling the truth when it wasn’t Tuesday, and he resigned to it. Since then, Cheryl and her four children have died, and yet the habit remains to this day. Timothy tells me that he was actually really sad when they all died, but it wasn’t Tuesday when he said that. Come to think of it, it wasn’t Tuesday when he told me this story. Oops.

Yey i got this one correctly while pausing the video. What I did is I just tried making the days the truthful day simultaneously and try if it fits with the statement. Lol. My answer to the warmup puzzle is Saturday, please confirm if this is correct.

Solved it in my head with just basic logic. From previous calculations, I was able to deduce that Monday and Tuesday were the only possibilities where he tells the truth. Further analysis proved that Monday couldn’t be a possibility because Day 3 would automatically be true and two days before Day 3 is Sunday which would mean that Day 2’s statement would simultaneously be true. Since that can’t happen, Tuesday is the only day where this works. Easy.

My answer is correct, but the whole thing was super confusing to do and I have no idea what I've even done to get to the answer.....Doing things in your head can be confusing, but thankfully it only took me about 5 minutes or something when I did it.

I solved it differently. First, let's remove possibilities. We know statement 1 cannot be said on a Monday or Tuesday. So Day 1 is W, R, F, Sa, Su Day 2 is T, F, Sa, Su, M Day 3 is F, Sa, Su, M, T But Day 3 cannot be Friday, because statement three cannot be said on a Wednesday or a Friday. Day 1 is R, F, Sa, Su Day 2 is F, Sa, Su, M Day 3 is Sa, Su, M, T Then I realized that day 1 and 3 cannot both be false, which means day two cannot be true. Day 1 is R, Su Day 2 is F, M Day 3 is Sa, T Finally I checked all four remaining possibilities, and fount the only one that works is where day 3 is Tuesday and a truth day

I didn't do all this in order to find out the answer. It's clear that lying on a Monday and Tuesday will collide with lying on a Wednesday and Thursday. Day 1 could be only Thursday, Saturday or Sunday. But, Thursday would lead to being Friday day 2,and Fryday is a lie; Wednesday would do the same thing because it can't be Thursday as day 2. Sunday is the only one with no problem, because day 2 can be Monday and it's a lie; third day is obviously a lie so, as Monday is conjugated with Tuesday, Tuesday can be True and Monday a lie. That's the case here.
