LearnSomeDrums I'm a beginner (I probably shouldn't be trying to match Josh Duns ability yet) but I already know all the simple beats. I just want to play a song and Twenty One Pilots always draws me in. I'm trying to learn Car Radio but my drum set doesn't sound right as it's in an echoey room. I can't tell what all you're playing. I have to keep rewinding it. I'm just stressed lol. I'm gonna keep trying even though as I said before it may be a little advanced for me.

All good! Stick with it. Definitely remember that drums in the room NEVER sound like drums on the recording so don't be too hard on yourself. Rewind a couple of times till you think you have the sound of it and then pause where the transcription is so you can line up the notes bit by bit. To start with you don't have to do all the fills and stuff either, just grab the big chunks and then you can play along!

In this video I used an Mbox 2 into Pro Tools and I had a Rode NT3 offscreen as an overhead and a Shure Beta 52 for the kick drum. Very simple setup but it usually gets a good sound!

I'm having kind of a hard time in the very beginning with the hi-hat. what exactly is your right hand doing?

+kmanflo I'm playing the 16th notes as written, but using shoulder/tip technique. So that's the shoulder of the stick for the first of two notes and then lifting my wrist up and using the tip of the stick for the second note. Very weird at first, but very useful for 16th note grooves.

(Or a headache haha) Slow it right down (like a snail doing tai chi 🐌), line up the notes in the transcription (are they played together or after one another), and also try breaking it up - just play kick till it's comfy, then just play snare... then put it back together! There are too many different skill levels to cater to all of them, but if you're a super determined beginner you could still work this out. And if you are having trouble I definitely recommend seeing your local drum teacher for help!
