Final destination 3 had a memorable scene where a lot of people were supposed to die on a rollercoaster. This move had some odd affects on the amusement industry.
I wanted to watch parts of it and give an inside view with lighthearted commentary as I review this scene from a ride mechanics perspective.

This accident based from Mindbender Accident. Ofc even more harrowing and faster for real life version (Schwarzkopf provide them with bad sparepart), but the sequence of accident is exactly the same (derailed from ejected bogie, the restrain getting destroyed from striking the track ties, people getting throwed off from train)
@Colaholiker
@Colaholiker 11 ай бұрын
@@bocahdongo7769I am not going to reiterate how wrong the often told cause of that accident is (It was *not* Schwarzkopf's fault, he even went to Canada together with Werner Stengel just after the accident to help in the investigations), but the train did not strike track ties and unlocked the restraints. What happened is that the train, obviously being slowed down by dragging the last coach along the track, rolled back, pushing the derailed coach (Schwarzkopf trains only have two axles on the lead coach and one axle on the following coaches) off to the side, where it hit a support column. This bent the brake fin upwards, which in turn pushed the unlock mechanism. So neither did the restraints get destroyed nor did the locking mechanism fail - it was simply unlocked due to other damage following the accident. I won't start discussion who hit it worse - the people who got ejected and fell to their death or the ones not getting ejected but crushed between the train rolling backwards and the support column.. all very tragic. Too bad there is a lot of inaccurate information about this accident out there... 😞

@@ryantheridemechanicin their defense, that bit of track was already loose. It was shown in the queue. I do like how the fiberglass just bonks off it. Probably made a good noise in the soundstage. EDIT: We can do the math here. Vortex track slices are a thing; a 1.5-inch-long slice of running rail weighs about 10 pounds. It's also about six inches in diameter; I would estimate we're looking at a half inch or so of thickness of tubular steel.

This is going to make me sound like an absolute baby, but I have severe anxiety and intrusive thoughts, and media like Final Destination really freaks me out when I’m trying to enjoy a day at the theme park (kinda funny being a thrill ride fan with anxiety 😭). Watching breakdowns of the scene from actual professionals helps me rationalize things a lot and know that this would NEVER happen irl. I know it’s not just me, this movie apparently turned a LOT of people away from coasters, so thank you for dissecting it and showing us the reality!

The idea that a plastic camcorder could beat a multi-ton roller coaster train always perplexed me. I grew up going to Great Adventure in New Jersey-Great American Scream Machine and its Arrow Looper sisters were certainly not man’s greatest innovation, but those road wheels, as is the case in all roller coasters of that size were roughly the size of your head.
@ryantheridemechanic
@ryantheridemechanic 11 ай бұрын
Big and steel. One wheel can obliterate a plastic camera for sure. Soft fabrics doe the most damage. Disney had a backpack fall on the track of their intamin and that got mangled up enough with the reaction fins that it just prevented the train from making the top of the next hill, and it valleyed.

Yeah, but you gotta admit that a realistic scene (camera on the track, train passes, *CRUNCH*, camera parts raining down, train continues as if nothing happened) would not have worked well with the theme of the movie... 🤣

Well I can admit I kinda freaked out on Tatsu. But the ride attendant was already there checking my restraints and I said very quietly that I wanted off. She asked if I was sure and I said yes so it wasn’t like the train was about to dispatch and I freak out at the last minute. I was so mad at myself but a couple of weeks later I finally got on and stayed on. I was riding with a bunch of other first timers. Now it’s one of my favorites and I help other first timers ease their anxiety. I admit that you had something to do with me finally riding what I thought was the most scary terrifying roller coaster in the world! You said nothings gonna happen and you will be fine. It will only be 90 seconds and you will wonder why you were afraid in the first place. When I see this scene it’s almost comical. I am glad you found your channel. I took my niece to Carowinds as soon as she was tall enough to ride roller coasters. The first one we rode was Carolina Cobra which goes backwards up a hill as soon as it leaves the station then comes flying back down. She watched it go a couple of times and decided she felt good about riding it. As soon as it started backing up the hill, she said "I changed my mind. I want to get off". I said "it's too late now. Just hold my hand and you'll be fine". So the roller coaster photo from that first drop is her looking absolutely terrified. By the end of the ride, she was having a blast, and immediately wanted to ride again. 13 years later, she still loves coasters.❤

14:52 Some guy has recreated the ride in NL2 from the CGI work and the layout on the control panel. The ride has two sets of double corkscrews, and it does them back to back with a turn in between them, like a Bekoma Whirlwind but with double corks. Amusingly, the bit with the hills comes after both of those, which means we have a continuity error as well.

Great video, as always! In preparation, I watched an upload of the roller coaster scene on KZbin and one of the first things that threw me off was that a ride operator, immediately after catching a rider holding a camera out in the open just before dispatch, then told the rider he could just put it in his pocket. When I first saw FD3, I did find the coaster scene to be pretty gripping, despite the fact that the first two movies were rather outlandish and ridiculous. IMO they border on black humor for me because of that. But, being a coaster fan, I immediately realized that the coaster scene was also over the top, silly and in so far as the failures, unrealistic. I can't say I didn't think about it the next time I went to a park and rode a coaster, but I knew that real coasters aren't like that at all. As far as that movie affecting park goers who aren't enthusiasts, I can easily see that. When I was a kid, I saw the Poseidon Adventure and that scared me away from going on a cruise ship for a long time. Eventually I got over that fear but I imagine that the cruise ship industry didn't like that movie any more than the amusement park industry liked FD3.

You should do a similar review of the 1977 film Rollercoaster. Otherwise, when I saw this int heaters and each clip you stopped to comment on I was in the theater yelling BS... BS, that is an arrow train no hydraulics, if the ride had any hydraulics it would most likely be the brake run and the lift system (depending on model) also this may also just be a Vekoma which used arrow trains any way and still no hydraulics. Most coasters even arrows were mechanical and pneumatic. I only remember once hydraulic system in my op years and that was on a whirlwind Vekoma and it was in the systems shed

What would happen if a hydraulic line were cut, aside from someone getting their clothes ruined by hydraulic fluid? Probably nothing. I might have a bit more experience with this movie because like you said it used to be located in Playland which is my unfortunate home amusement park, it was originally located in the now defunct (closed in 1993) Boblo Island from 1985 to 1993 known as Screamer which was then relocated to Playland in 1994 and closed down in 2018 and when this horrific movie came out, it went from a somewhat mediocre coaster to a downright hated coaster among enthusiasts, for the remaining 12 years of operation, I was happy when they finally got rid of that monstrosity of a coaster, my only hope is that their "new" coaster will do better, but seeing as they've sunk I think it was $9,000,000 into a roller coaster that is going to be 15 years old when they get it rebuilt there, my hopes are not that high, sure it'll be fun to have a launch coaster at my home park, but it's not encouraging that they'd rather spend that much money on a used coaster than to get a brand new coaster from the same company (Zamperla) for a couple million more.

I haven’t ridden this one but just watching videos, it doesn’t seem like a happy train of people. Sounds like a lot of bumps and bangs. The ending to the ride looks anticlimactic as well.

The funniest part is that was an old Arrow Corkscrew made by Vekoma🤣🤣🤣 Dramatic Effect? Yeah....logical and realistic? Far from it...you should reach out to James Wong to correct his mistakes... Neil deGrasee Tyson did that to James Cameron about sky and star discrepancies in Titanic.... When Titanic got rereleased James messaged Neil and the rerelease now has the correct sky from when the ship sank

can confirm the freakouts, have seen it happen multiple times, not that big a deal when it does happen, just delays dispatch for 10-20 seconds while we recheck all the harnesses. to anyone who is thinking about going to an amusement park, if at any time before we send the train out of the station, you don't feel safe for any reason, please speak up and let the operators know. We will not force you to ride if you don't want to. all we ask is try to be patient as we may have to manually unlock the restraints depending on the ride and how long the cycle time for the restraints takes. we will get you off the ride the soonest that we physically can.

I always thought the camera the guy dropped damaged the wheel assembly on top of also damaging the hydraulic fitting. So you have wheels coming off as the restraints are coming up. The coaster cars derail which break the hitches. It's still all 100% bullshit but there's more of a method to it than you seemed to understand in this video.

I have to say, “Devils Flight” (as it’s referred as in the movie) has a pretty kickass layout full of bunny hills and hang time filled inversions. Part of me wishes the ride existed in this form in real life (with proper coaster designing of course). The Final Destination movies never fail to make me roll my eyes. As someone whose also an Avgeek the first movie made me cringe. Like apparently some turbulence is gonna cause sparks to fly everywhere (this franchise really loves its sparks), it’s gonna cause holes to rip out of the sides, and then the whole plane is just gonna explode in midair. It’s all pretty stupid.

Let me tell you something about that: That ride technically did exist! It was in an amusement park in Vancouver, and the ride was actually called the corkscrew! But it wasn’t as big as it was in the movie! So the film creator’s decided to make it bigger with some visual effects! And they did a good job with the scene! However, after the movie came out, people who saw it didn’t want to ride that roller coaster anymore! So to save their money, the people who owned the park had to dismantle the ride completely!

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely Ridiculous Movie!!! How's come that didn't happen when a Road Wheel came off from a Train on The Bat at Kings Island??? And The Train was traveling at 55mph??? It did damage to The Track, and The Train didn't derail like in this 3 Stooges of a Movie.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣‼️ The movie Rollercoaster is more believable than This one. Not when The Rocket Train completely derailed. The only thing that would have happened is that The Train would lose Momentum and Stall Out. Perhaps a Guide Wheel, and a Upstop Wheel would most likely have damage to The Assembly, probably a completely broken off Upstop. Now Timothy Bottoms Character is Very Believable when he gets Struck, and Killed Instantly by The Revolution Train. Which also is a Very Good Public Address Video. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!! Enter a Restricted Area of Any Rollercoaster when Riders might have lost Any Lose Articles during The Ride. It's Not Worth losing Your Life Over!!!☠️🛑🛑🛑🛑🛑🤚🏽 DANGER!!! RESTRICTED AREA!!! Yeah after scouring all the ride accident stories it's really easy to see that the vast, vast majority of ride accidents with serious injury or fatality were all caused by just straight human error like ride operators/mechanics clearing a block zone with people on the ride still, or operators just failing to see restraints properly secured. It's never because the actual ride just straight broke apart (except that discovery ride in like India, that shit was crazy). The only one I can think of that was really the ride messing up like like was the launch coaster that they let the stators get out of true alignment on which ripped off the undercarriage of the trains pretty much after rolling back into them.

I know that Wicked Cyclone's PLC has two unlock systems like that; you can unlock just cars 1-3 or 4-6. An Arrow or Vekoma ride of this size would absolutely have seven-car trains, though, and Arrow PLCs unlock the entire train at once. Some are precise enough to unlock specific seats, which is funny when someone gets busted for having a phone out on the ride; they leave the miscreant locked in until security arrives.
