For those who don’t know, Yannick Mirko who played Ricky was fired for his disability. Yannick has a rare disease which causes him to use mobility aids. His disability also makes him throw up blood. This happened during a rehearsal causing him to leave the stage. The next day they were informed that he was getting replaced with his able-bodied understudy, saying that his disability made his body “too physically inconsistent” for theater. This is disgusting. Please do not support McCarter Theater

for everyone who is saying the Theater fired the actor who played tricky for being disabled that is incorrect. The actor posted on their tiktok saying that after sugar cloud and before the finale they went back stage and threw up blood, which is a rare complication of their dissability. However they did not tell their employer this before hand. after the show the following day they were told that their understudy was going to replace them for the final 3 shows and they they were done performing the show. the actor was upset and started to say that they were fired due to their dissability and how they were gaslight into the idea that the character they were playing was not dissabled. the actor says in their tiktok that they were fired for the dissability is too inconsistent and is a threat to the show. They say that they always feel better after vomiting and how they vomit every night. HOWEVER they then say that after they were let go they didn't vomit for the next three days which according to their own recounting of their own dissability is extremely inconsistent. The teater let them go due to the fact that nobody would want an actor to be ill on stage espec ially if they vomit up blood. Please do proper research before jumping to conclusions.
@thebeebz95112 жыл бұрын
Dude. You can't go around calling disabilities inconsistent. That's between a patient and their doctor to decide. Legally, a company cannot force someone to disclose a disability and with this actor being in an actual wheelchair...yeah, the company knew they were disabled. Illness shows up in different ways and THAT's one of the many, many reasons why the situation is so messed up. The fact that the people handled this situation by trying to silence the actor was also messed up. If I were to believe that they were not fired and just asked to sit out of the last three shows with compensation, production still handled the situation extremely poorly and this cast and show unfortunately, is paying the price for it.
@noaheaston21472 жыл бұрын
@@thebeebz9511 you are correct that a company does not have the right to make anyone disclose their disability BUT however when it comes to theater you don't have to disclose your dissability but the theater still hold the right to not cast you or not let you perform.
@thebeebz95112 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The actor mentioned that the vomiting was part of their disability. The theater company was so proud that they had a disabled actor in their cast - then failed to provide equity when their disabled actor actually had to deal with symptoms of their disability. Seems like a lot of productions are happy to have someone who's disabled to check their diversity box and appear inclusive...but don't actually want to support their actors if their disability gets messy. I stand by what I said, they handled it poorly and should not have tried to silence the actor.

There was more to it, I think it was also said that Yannick had their costume straps shortened for the Space Age Bachelor Man number as well. The character was also originally written with stereotypes of Disability and that Ricky was “cured” (the original production up until Yannick threw away his mobility aids and spoke.) Yannick being disabled showcased accurate portrayal that disabilities (especially long term) cannot be “cured” but now the character has had the disability backstory completely erased. Not to mentioned Disabled actors rarely get cast in theatre, let alone being accomodating in the first place. Not to mention physical disabilities can have days that make it difficult for disabled people to function in their day to day life, while other days they might be completely fine (it is manageable for the person. It depends on the condition). In this case, Yannick had managed to get through most of the productions without coughing up blood, but during one performance, he ended up coughing blood and because his disability was not “occurring every single time” people who have not dealt with disabilities would assume it as “faking”. That is an issue that the theatre production was not accomodating or understanding of a medical disability/condition.
