I feel like Ocean is the most realistic and well written “mean girl character”, shes not from a out of touch multi millionaire family, shes from a family that neglected her, shes not doing this not because she was bullied in the past or for no reason at all, shes doing it because shes trying to get attention, just in a unhealthy way.
@bramslamm3 ай бұрын
I think its important to note that not only were Ocean's parents hippies, but criminally negligent to the point of offering her drugs and nothing else. She latches on to external markers of success because those were the only forms of positive feedback she could ever attain, her parents never acknowledging her no matter what she could accomplish.

not to mention how she definitely was not popular. if the only way to get validation is through medals, As and following the rules to a T, you'd take opportunity and times it by 100

Personally, I believe that Noel's interaction with Mischa after Jane Doe's song makes Noel realize that if he'd gotten to know Mischa in life, he would've hopelessly fallen in love with a boy who could never love him back because Mischa is the first person to truly see and accept him as he is. That in and of itself would've been the tragedy he's always wanted.

This is probably already said but Noel’s lament ISNT a lament, it’s a ballad! Ballad of Jane Doe is actually a lament!

Ricky legitimately made me cry because when I figured out the plot, as a disabled teenager with a degenerative disability, I thought “I’d just uhhh sing what’d I miss and say fuck it” because I felt like my life isn’t worth as much as others.
@AnyomnusM3 ай бұрын
I love how Ocean kinda leads everyone into their song, Noel starts his song after he yells at Ocean, Mischa starts his song after he tells Ocean that he's not h0m0phob1c, Ricky starts his song after correcting Ocean on her statement that they're all accidents and Constance starts her song after hitting ocean in the t1t. However Jane Doe is the only one who doesnt really have Ocean allude to her song, possibly because Ocean forgot about Jane Doe/Penny lamb and doesn't talk to her much because she feels scared of her. I like the fact that Jane Doe moves just like a porcelain doll :) However after the birthday song, she attempts to move more human like. I like to interpret this as Jane Doe seeing human's spontaneous nature for the 'first time' and she tries to replicate it however she has no idea what its like to be human so she looks silly trying to mimic humans.

I played Karnak in a production of Cyclone earlier this year, and it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life. We were operating on a relatively shoestring budget, but that - and how closely we bonded outside of the show - allowed us to really focus on the theme of finding connections amidst chaos.

Ride The Cyclone is one of those musicals that are quite hidden and go unnoticed, but when you watch it fills you with a weird feeling - I can't explain exactly what it is. It's like an emotional roller-coaster, no pun intended. You are able to see yourself reflected in every character, the songs are so different from each other, and it has some of the best monologs I've ever heard. Jawbreaker, Mischa's monolge at the beginning of Talia, Ocean's speech at the end when she chooses Jane Doe... They are all beautiful. The ending is satisfying because the characters are satisfied with their future. It's frankly one of the most beautiful musicals I've ever seen. Never fails to make me laugh and make me cry. Weird musical with an even weirder fan base, I love Ride The Cyclone. This Halloween I'm so dressing up as Jane Doe! (The only thing I don't like is how ableist some of its productions are, but I hope some day they manege to solve that)

I became obsessed with this musical to the point of writing a fan fiction following the choir if they were ALL given another chance at life (starting with the death of their choir director, Father Markus, then moving on from there). I just knew there was something to be said about how they would choose to live similarly or differently based on their experience in the warehouse. Would Noel see his romantic idea of tragedy differently? How would Mischa's relationship with Talia play out, considering that I'd argue his love for her also represents a longing for the culture he was forced to leave behind? Why was Penny never able to be identified (outside of the context of Legoland, since I couldn't be bothered lol), and *could* she live a life on a more upward trajectory? There's just so much to think about with this musical and I can't help but yap about it.

Ride the Cyclone was suppose to be our school play since it has more in depth story-telling and also because its my personal favorite musical, even if it ended up not being chosen as our musical it still stands that it is more than just a musical with a random songlist.

This was EVERYTHING thank you. I’ve been a long time fan of RTC since the Vancouver Atomic Vaudville days when it came to the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. I’ve been so happy to see this piece of art get some time in the sun but this is the first analysis video I’ve seen of it, and I live for analysis videos more than most things. So thank you for putting so many of my thoughts to a coherent light.

i saw a highschool production of RTC a couple years ago at a state theatre festival and it was one of the best performances I've experienced period. it was just hundreds of teenage theatre kids in this one convention center auditorium and everyone interacted with the show. one of my favorite examples of this was how when they started singing happy birthday to Jane, the entire theater joined in

Ride the Cyclone has some great songs but they didn’t hire disabled actors to play disabled characters and then when they did they treated them horribly and were incredibly ableist and the show makes me sad with how they write their disabled characters as a disabled person with cruel jokes about their disability

@@takemybloon1210they fired them for being too disabled which is illegal and wouldn’t make accomodations for their disability and when they asked to change ableist lines in the script they them said the character isn’t disabled (despite them using mobility aids and other characters commenting on them being disabled).
