The BEAUTIFUL FORD SABRE engine I nearly bought a cruiser with twin Sabres!! My parents took me to see the Torquay to Cowes powerboat race several times . We would borrow a friends boat and anchor at the turning point ! I first saw this film as a child when my late father worked for Decca building TV sets. The showed 'Trade Test Transmissions' (mostly short BP films) repeatedly! So during the school holidays I would watch them over and over! Those FAIREY HUNTSMEN were GORGEOUS! I wish I could have bought that lovely old cruiser I found. THANK YOU for the memories or a happier England now lost in the sands of time...................

Thank you. I've had this music as an earworm on and off for about 50 years. This must have played fairly regularly on the BBC during the summer holidays in the early seventies. I could even remember some of the dialogue! Fantastic. Now to research and find that music...

Really didn’t know that the sport went that far back. It’s changed so much to make it a fan based event like NASCAR that a lot of the grit is taken out of the sport. I know in the Detroit area a group of offshore boaters have a Thursday afternoon picnic run. No pace boat, no rules, all gentleman’s agreements among friends and then WOT (wide open throttle for the neophytes, it’s not a new sexual orientation). It’s the true spirit of “go fast” boats. Way, way back the auto executives were moving to the pointes (Gross Pointes, it’s a real place, not just a movie) and in the spring and summer they didn’t like the traffic jams on Jefferson Ave. which follows the Detroit River to downtown. Story is, on nice days the exec’s would take their 43’ Chris Craft to work. The tradition caught on and if anybody tried to pass Edsel’s boat, he called the engine lab and said “I need a bigger engine”. That’s right, even though Edsel’s life was ruined by his crazy father, HF-1, he was a go fast boat freak. I hear he liked to cruise Lake St. Clair and the river. There were a lot of those guys. That’s why Detroit still has unlimited races. The gas turbines ruined the event. “DOES THAT THING HAVE A MOTOR IN IT OR DID YOU LEAVE YOUR RADIO ON?”
