Ride to Spurn Point, East Riding of Yorkshire

With a weekend free, we decided to do something that had been on our bucket list for a while, the Spurn Point Military Safari. On a glorious morning, we rode over to Spurn Point nature reserve on the East Coast of Yorkshire taking in the small villages in Holderness. Spurn Point is a spit of land separating the Humber Estuary and the North Sea that has suffered from coastal erosion for centuries. We joined the tour and boarded an old Unimog military vehicle to the bottom of Spurn Point as the road in the middle is now washed away and this vehicle is one of only a few that can make the journey. We then rode up towards Withernsea on the east coast and then headed back towards home.

My in-laws used to live in a mobile home caravan just outside of Cowden on the East Coast. My wife and I have often ridden those roads when we had a motorbike. A more memorable journey home we had one night was in the car though. When we set off, there was a light sea fog just coming in but that was just the start of it. By the time we had travelled a couple of miles that light fog had turned into a heavy pea souper (as we in Yorkshire call them). We were driving at about 10 miles an hour with my head out of the window when all of a sudden a house appeared in the middle of the road, which was bizarre!! It turned out not to be a house in the middle of the road, we had in fact driven up a private driveway that was over 100 yards from the road. Much to the dismay of the owners! After a brief apology and an offer of coffee, we left as it was still a considerably long drive home. We still laugh about it now after all this time............
