Old guy in Texas here and recent convert to an '18 RT. Been riding GS and GSA models for some years and came to realize that the riding my wife and I do suits an RT better in terms of the added wind protection and overall comfort. Too old and just not inclined for any off road riding and the closest we might get is some poorly paved Ranch Roads with steel cattle guards. Not that the GS and GSA models I've owned weren't great in their own right but for me and the riding I do the RT wins out. And all of this being very subjective of course, I prefer the more refined looks of the RT. The radio seems a bit silly but who knows I may come to use it for short trips and slower speeds. So far, honeymoon bliss with my RT and very glad I made the switch. Thanks for enlightening me on the virtues of the touring class.

After 32 years I came back into biking with the lovely Royal Enfield 650 Interceptor - so much like my bikes of the 70's. It does everything so easily - a pleasure to ride but wthout the leaky engines and nice rumble exhaust. Wife said she would not fit on there, nothing to grab a hold of. Saw an R1200RT for sale, excellent condition - 2005 and 40,000mls and only 3,000BPd equivalent. Bought that as well and loving it!! Thanks for the vid, shows me all the little nice features I am missing lol!!

What a BRILLIANT review,your the first person to actually show in detail the full workings of the dash board it is this video that had helped me buy RT instead of the GS . Many thanks for a GREAT VIDEO . HAPPY BIKING for the future!

Amazingly detailed review. Of course, by now, you know the front suspension of the Gs is the same as the Rt . Apart from that understandable lapse all is immensely compensated by the way you explained everything in a passionate and involving way. It's clear you have feeling for this bike and it's amazingly clear why. I too made the choice to go for the RT instead of the GSA, choosing to ignore the hype. I never ever took my SupetTenere off road, they're just to heavy and uncomfortable to deal with. So I thought, putting a little rationality in a bucket load of passion, to go for the tourer and quit all the "one day will go to Mongolia" kind of thinking. Best choice ever! I had just finished a week trip with my wife and some friends (almost all in GSA s),suffering in every stop not to fall over to the side, because of the conjunction of being 1.65m, the almost 500kgs of the loaded supertenere with me, my wife and luggage, and my 51 yo, and did one of the best choices of my life motorcycle wise. I perfectly understand your passion. No more road bikes on stilts!

Hey Toby . Seen this a few times . Some people don’t like to look through clear wind screens when riding which I find strange . I wonder if they r the same people I c at the grocer with the clear cooler door wide open looking for the frozen food they want to buy ????

I've just taken ownership of a 2017 RT and it is AMAZING. I'm selling an Electra Glide and a GL1800 to help replenish the account! All of these machines have their upsides and downsides. So far, with so limited time on the RT, I am finding it nimble, powerful and comfortable. It took me a while to sort out the controls and buttons, but that will fall into line soon enough. Wind protection is FAR better on the RT. Clearly BMW put these into a wind tunnel or simulation software to shape it for best possible contours. The significantly lower weight is exactly what I need now in my late 50's. The Goldwing, once it starts going over, you're in trouble. The Electra Glide, is not as top heavy but it is woefully sllloooowwwww. Just a total sloth...all that displacement and noise but NO power. It took me a while to get here but with reviews like yours, I feel I made a great choice in choosing the RT. I rode a '14 GSA and frankly, it just felt like a huge dirt bike. Not something I need for work commuting and some local trips with my lady. Cheers from across the pond in SW USA!

I agree with you about the "paddles" for turn signals. They are so easy to access and use compared to the latest turn signal switch, especially for those of us who have shorter thumbs. I have been riding RT's for more than 20 years and really like your review of the 2018 model.

Craig Griffiths you said you’ve been riding Ty’s for 20 years so I assume you have a great knowledge about them. I’m a Harley guy who has been looking at getting something different. The rt And the 1600 gtl have caught my eye. But the closest dealership isn’t very close to me. So before I go look could you tell me if the 1200 rt would be a good fit for me at all. By size I mean. I’m 6’3 270 lbs. also any tother things pros or cons you might mention would be greatly appreciated. Same for the gtl if your familiar with them

Hi mate. Thanks for the question. I think the 1600 would give you more leg room but either would suit I think. You can get foot peg addons that enable you to lowers or move them slightly which might help. They are both capable bikes and would suit I’m sure but without trying them out in person it’s really hard to say for definite which one you would like best. Hope that helps :)

Great review. Thanks. Just one point... the RT has exactly the same front suspension set-up as your GS... both have Telelever. The difference might be in the width of the handlebars... the wider GS 'bars give you much more leverage which makes it less effort to turn and feel lighter than the RT.

I really enjoyed your review of this fine Bike! BMW knows how to refine and build a pleasurable riding machine! Also, it sure beats the $1100.00 USD. Maintenance required for the K1600 every 18,000 miles.just to readjust the 24 valves it brags about having. For someone that really gets his use from riding that sort of bill to look forward to takes all the fun out of purchasing one. The R/1200/RT doesn't have that problem at all. A valve adjustment is for two cylinders only and not near that price. I would purchase one just from watching your review. Your review is that good. Thank You for taking the time for doing this. You have a new friend in the USA that lives in the great State of Arizona.

Great video review. I'm getting ready to pick up a 2014 RT. Thanks for explaining the menus and features. I already downloaded the owner manual for the bike and it has a lot of information in it, but it is not very clearly written. It's much easier to learn the menus by watching than by reading. I don't know why BMW calls every switch or button switch 1 or button one. Why not call each button what it is, such as Menu button? Nice overview, and now I'm really pumped. It's definitely dangerous to test ride one of these!

My GS sucks for wind protection over 65mph. Is the Adventure any better? I don't have the GSA, I bought the regular GS. It does seem like that huge gas take would help block more wind, especially in the inner leg area.
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 жыл бұрын
We find the adventure really good for wind protection. Toby has a Wunderlich screen (aftermarket) that we reviewed and fitted some time ago and Mark uses the stock screen, both without issues. Have you tried the Wunderlich screen defeletor, as many GS owners swear by them?
@bobjohnson2920

Thanks! I have a really nice Givi Windshield that protects my upper body great. My problem is my inner legs, the wind constantly blows my legs out away from the gas tank area. I'm constantly holding my legs in and after 3-4 hours they become so fatiged I have to start stopping ever 45 minutes. I'm only 6' but have long legs so they pretty cramped. I also have the seat up as high as it will go. I'm actually going to test ride GSA Today.

Good information rich review, thanks. I'm coming back to biking after 37 yrs, and had a busy week last week riding the RT, GS, and both Vstroms looking for a potential steed. Bearing in mind I'd only done a one day back to biking course I was amazed the RT was so simple to ride, almost on autopilot. Thanks hated every minute of the video ! Only because I know I cannot afford to buy one and as you've very well illustrated a great bike. Some years ago now I test rode an RT & a GS and hated them. Then having owned a few more bikes unbelievably I saw a second GS for sale in a dealer show room and decided to buy it as it was at the right price. As I rode it away I was thinking what have I done but thankfully within 5 miles I was loving it. Owned it now 5 years and would only trade it in for either an RT or GS. Its the Boxer engine for me every time now.

Update - Never try a change the low beam bulb when it goes, its a pain. I broke off the retaining clip and Cannons Braintree had to take off the whole front to get at it and "fix" the problem. Why make it so hard to change a bulb BMW?

I really appreciate you covering the differences between this bike and the GS, it helps those of us who are considering both. The front end being more planted and stable specially at lower speeds was a great distinction you pointed out specially because of the off road influence on the front GS wheel. Frankly if the RT looked sharper like the GS and not as Bulbous as it does, legions of people would buy them more. Because man of us will never go off road, but the look of this big bubble just spells 'old man', or Gold Wing old timer, its just a huge turn off. Hopefully BMW will some day address this void in the market place.

@inspectorchicken
@inspectorchicken 4 жыл бұрын
DervMan, the suspension design is the same (Telelever in the front and Paralever in the back) - but the set up is entirely different. The GS has way more travel and a significantly larger wheelbase. The RT has 17/17 inch wheels and the GS has 19/17 inch wheels as well. This is why both bikes ride completely different, albeit having the same engine characteristics and layout. While we're at it, the telelever does one thing vs a conventional suspension: the wheelbase stays the same while braking and accelerating. With other setups the wb varies, which makes the bike handle more different in situations, depending on the bikes position and lean.

Very nice review. I moved to the 2016 RT from the 2014 ADV & by doing so missed: A. the beautiful LED head lights. B. I had the low seat on both & the RT managed to break in my butt instead of me it, way too firm. C. I once ended up in a cut off area & was very nervously watching the fuel level & sooo missed the ADV's range. While the RT displays everything, you can only see a data at a time but was nice to have all displayed on the NAV simultaneously on the ADV. Conclusion: Back to ADV for 2018.

Hey buddy, it’s a Fab bike and just as smooth as the K1600GT as it’s basically the same bike but with a different body styling. The same bike indeed and Mark and I chatted after the review and for touring (with luggage capacity) I’d get the K1600GT but if your going for the ‘Harley type’ style the bagger is the one. So nice, I’d love to get a 2018 or so... but I can’t really afford one; maybe a 2011 with finance. Can I ask, how do you afford this and other bikes? What do you do? Always worth looking into viable career paths lol

hey buddy, thanks for th comments and question. As we have been biking for quite a while and started the youtube channel we have been fortunate to have friends at showrooms and also by going into ask if we can work with them and review their bikes. we have our BMW 1200 GSA's that we ride.

I have just watched your RT review for the third time, an excellent review. I am curious as to why you chose the GSA over the RT especially in your line of work ( touring). Do you think real tourers like the RT are on the way out. Adventure bikes now seem to be the alternative touring bikes these days?

Hello RiderCamTV, I have booked a test ride on the 2018 RT through Pidcocks BMW based at Long Eaton, Nottingham. Hope it rides as good as it looks. My PCP deal on the GS ends in a few weeks time and to my mind the RT looks to be the obvious replacement. Do you get any tyre noise from the front of the bike? My GS seems to suffer from this trait, with a very intrusive noise being generated when the road speed exceeds 30 MPH. If you ride on perfectly smooth tarmac the noise almost disappears.
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 жыл бұрын
Good choice of bikes, both the Gs and the rt are fab! The road noise was probably the tyres. We found the stock anakee 3’s were noisy and now we are on metzeler tourance and roadtecs the noise has gone :)

Incredibly thorough and thoughtful review. I learned a few things about it that I never knew before. I've ridden one of these only once, but it was for a full day, and I couldn't agree more with all of your assessments, including the right/left turn indicators on the previous generations. IMHO, the RT is the most desirable, most thoroughly conceived sports touring motorcycle ever made. Unfortunately, I have no idea how I will ever be able to afford one. Thanks so much for the review.

I would agree re it being the most desirable, most thoroughly conceived sports touring motorcycle ever made. If one only ever wanted to do road work, I think I'd prefer it to a GS/GSA. However, if one wants to say do some camping, or have to traverse a dirt or gravel road to a campsite, the GS/GSA starts to come into it's own with it's offload abilities, less likelihood of expensive repairs in an inadvertent drop in those conditions, and the GS/GSA panniers are better suited for camping/touring rather than staying in a hotel overnight. And whilst I love the fairing, in hot climates, (35 - 40ºC +) it's probably a demerit, with the GS/GSA providing better summer riding ventilation, albeit less weather protection in winter.
@theloveman9
@theloveman9 7 жыл бұрын
No argument from me. Those are the exact reasons to choose a GS/GSA in lieu of an RT.
@Pisceanboi
@Pisceanboi 7 жыл бұрын
Here in Australia the police use the RT, but they are a relatively rare sight on the roads in private ownership - most seem to go for either the GS or the GSA. In part I think that has a lot to do with our less than stellar roads once you get off the main highways, our often vast distances, and extreme heat in summer. As such, for serious long distance touring, the GSA has the edge over the standard GS with the extra tank range, the slightly better wind protection with the fractionally bigger screen and the side 'winglets', along with even more ability should you choose to go off road. However it is surprising the number of GS owners I've met who actually prefer not to take them off road - weight, expensive in an inadvertent drop etc - but relish the comfort, tank range, good summer weather protection/ventilation, and if needed to go down a beaten track, the ability to literally do it all. Whichever one were to choose, RT, GS or GSA they're all fantastic bikes IMHO. PS: A shoutout to RiderCamTV for one of the very best reviews I've either seen or read on the RT. Congratulations for a superb review, and thank you! :-)

Had a GS years ago when living in Arizona. Took it on all the border roads and into the mountains. Damn thing was just too heavy when toppled over and a real pig in sand. Anyway, the RT handles just fine on dirt/gravel roads. RT 90%road/10% dirt, most people ride the GS 80%road/20% dirt.

Have to qualify my earlier comments! I have just re-watched your video! ... It's awesome. In 36 years of riding bikes, I have to say my favourite is the RT. I bought a new 2006 RT, and enjoyed it for three years. I did think it was somewhat under-powered though. It also had the servo brakes, and had a party piece, that whe hot, (after a motorway run say), it would cut out when you backed off the throttle, .... Eh on one of those, no engine meant no brakes! ... Led to the odd "exciting moment"!!! :) I started in the early 80s on, of all things a Honda express deluxe moped! (coolest thing ever when you are 16)... IT was a two speed automatic, stopped and not moving!!! :) I bought the RT in 2006, in the hope that after years of sportsbikes, the "pipe and slippers brigade might take effect" .... LOL! ... how wrong was my perception .... and how good is the RT???? At this stage the RT was just run in. I was commuting into Dublin through the traffic, and was kinda "playing" with a guy on a VFR. The lights went green, he gave it the berries - I did too! Little did I expect that the RT would launch, and save the front tyre rubber! ... It must have been a mile before I overcame my shock, and thought that my non pipe-smoking would be a good thing! .... I might have lost tobacco!! Biggest Wheelie I've done in years, with the radio on, and the boxes full of my weekend packing! You mentioned the tipping in of the RT, in my experience this is very tyre dependent! .... On the 2005 model, I found the Dunlop tyres were really stable, and trustworthy - afterwards I tried pirielli diablos - didn't like those so much - they wanted to REALLY tip into corners! ... went back to dunlops after! I also found that an RT with a Top box is WAY more comfy than without! I found that without the topbox, there was pressure on the small of your back, not a big deal on a short run ... bug a major deal on big touring runs! For me the biggest similarities between the GS and the RT is that you effectively ride both standing up! ... It's the comfiest position ever! (Sports bike riders take note ... your elbow does not always need to touch your knee). The advantage of the RT is that because of it's amazing faring, you are not out in the weather. ..... as in, at little more than 20mph ... you will not get wet in a monsoon! (Not scientifically tested) ... but a fun fact to throw about! Since my RT, I have owned; Blade RRW, Blade 929, VSTrom 1000, Varadero 1000, ZZR 1200, 954 Blade, and now I have a winter hack 2000 Fazer 600. I look forward to my next RT! ... hopefully one of the 125bhp models! :) I alw

A damn shame BMW chose to appease the gizmo freaks and Ricky Racer Luddites and put innately defective telescopic forks on the R1200R. I didn't want a GS or the RT. But I would have definitely bought that new R1200R when introduced if BMW hadn't hobbled it with brake dive replete, bump-steer prone, horrifically insensitive telescopic forks. BMW has traded their once respected legacy of innovatively engineered motorcycles for trendy digital gadgetry and electronic nannies.
@dcmsr5141

Douglas Elliott interesting point, however with at least 1 state California adopting the R1200RT for the state highway patrol, it goes without saying BMW passed all of the rigorous test put to it. Many bikes failed for said contract. Kawasaki KZ900 had this contract for well over a decade. Telescopic forks with its flaws, works. Many other municipalities have adopted this bike for said purposes. IMHO if it ain't broke why fix it?
