I've wanted to do a video on this car for a long time. When I found out it was the lost Bill Zahora Custom I dropped everything and grabbed my camera.

I commend Bill for his decision and commitment to returning this Baby back to original! WAY TOO MANY of these great old cars are customized, chopped, ratted and rodded, tricked out, and whatever else you want to call it! The Car shows here are overwhelmingly filled with customized cars! It seems that the original ones are getting fewer and farther between. This one is absolutely gorgeous!

HOORAH! someone finally rescued an old car from being condemned to be a stupid shot rod. Original cars are so rare and so hard to keep stock. Hot rods are a dime a dozen. Just go to any car show. YEAH!

My personal opinion...I absolutely hate when they take these beautiful old antiques and convert them into hot rods. Just ruins them! Nice to see this gentleman was able to bring this grand old lady back to her original condition.

My great grandfather had a 1936 ford 4 door convertible. He restored it down to the nuts and bolts. I wish I could have seen it up close but we only have pictures since it was sold when he died before I was born. It was lacquer blue and I do know its in a car museum somewhere in the here in the US

If you take an original and make it into a custom people complain. If you take a custom and put it back in its original form people complain. Bill, the important thing is that you are happy with it and probably even more important than that is that your wife is happy with it. Looks fantastic. A deserved show winner.

It looks so much better as a return to factory stock status than one of those bizarre customs which in my opinion detract from much of the car's beauty. It just looks drop dead gorgeous with burgundy or is it maroon paint finish, tan top and work of art metal instrument panel with a radio if I'm not mistaken. All these factors blend together to recapture the original intent of the car's stylists. Well done.

Very nice restoration job and a classy car. I am sure it was sweet as a hot rod and it is unusual to go back to original, but for this car, this was likely the best thing for it, being as rare as it is. Thanks so much for taking us along on the ride and sharing the history lesson, Chuck.

Thanks for putting it back to original. I wish more people would do that. A friend of mine has a 35 Ford Cabriolet (with rumble seat). It steers like it has flat tires and the brakes are terrible. But it's all stock. Another has a 46 Ford woody wagon. The leaf springs squeak just like this 36 seems to. The 35 does the same thing. I always wondered why Ford went to "Volkswagen" style wheels from 36-39, then back to conventional bolt pattern in 1940. I wonder why Ford did a lot of the things he did, but he built a huge business empire doing it!

I've seen a few custom --> original restorations. These are usually an exceptionally difficult path. as so much originality was discarded when the custom car was done, and so much structure was modified. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks for taking this one back to original. It is drop-dead gorgeous.

My dad had a '36 with a "rumble seat" ( we called it a "dickie seat" here in Australia) when i was 8yr old ( 52 yrs. ago). This video took me back to a time in my life when "things were so much simpler". Thanks for the memories, Chuck.

Awesome car! 2 things: Where did that gentleman find aluminum heads for that engine? And lol @ 85 horsepower for an 8 cyl! Is that a record? Lowest hp per 8 cyl? Still a great car. Love the look of that Merc too.

Restoring the car to original was absolutely the right choice. My father once owned a 36 coupe, bought it in 55. Car came with a crankcase full of sawdust and plenty of rust. Apparently he paid $50.00 for it.

I've never understood why people continue to chop and ruin these beautiful cars. Furthermore, why they insist on dropping g 350 chevys and getting rid of the original flathead V8. You can easily take the 85hp v8 and with a hc head, better intake carb and exhaust you can easily get up to 110 120 hp which is plenty for that car and is a non permanent change. Throw in a better lift cam, and you'll have all the power you'll ever need while still running the original motor.

A car can be customized in thousands of different ways...but is original only one way...not to take anything away from all the custom cars, but it is wonderful to see them like this sometimes....

I am Pat Zahora, Bill was my husband. I have wondered for years what became of "Fantabulous". This car was pulled out of the Sag Canal and Bill started restoring it. When we owned it, it was customized into a rod. It has a 58 Olds engine in it with plastic valve covers. Those were the "good ole days" of going to Hot Rod shows. Is the car still in Illinois. We sold the car in the early 60s to a man in Westmont, Illinois. This has made my day as I have wondered what happened to the car as I lost track of it years ago.

+Pat Triska Hello Pat, I was aware of your custom back in the 1960's and knowing it was a local car always wondered where it was. I had know Bill Vogt when I was a teenager. I met him again in the 1990's when we were both board members of a classic car club. One day I mentioned the Zahora car and almost fell out of my seat when he told me the he and his wife Jackie owned it. They have both passed away in the last few years. John Sanders from Rockford, Illinois helped Bill's daughter dispose of the cars. I don't know where that Ford is today. Mr. Sanders email is antiqueauto1120@sbcglobal.net Thank you for writing, I was very proud to be able to ride in your 1936 Ford. Best regards, Chuck Derer

HOW ABOUT A MIDDLE GROUND.........WHERE HE PUT'S A NICE LITTLE 350 IN IT, WITH SOME DECENT BRAKES, AIR CONDITIONING AND A DIGITAL DISPLAY SYSTEM, BUT LEAVES THE REST ALONE........THAT WAY IT'S SAFER AND MORE ECONOMICAL...
