2022 Royal Enfield Classic 350 - How To Adjust The Tappets Or Valves

Here's a look at the pilot or promo clip on what i plan to do if I go ahead with the 25 part series on my Roadside Cook and Ride adventure in the Australian outback .
My thoughts being this series could take a good year to complete all episodes

well your right the sun shines quite a lot ...maybe too much...lol plenty of bird life too. where i live i have heaps of roads to ride or tracks too plus the scenery differs differs from place to place. plenty of riders live in the city so its a fair hike for them to travel but i often bump into them on dirt roads -not so the sealed as they are going too fast...lol

it's great to see an owner getting in about the new 350 classic. most videos just now are people reviewing the bike, but not actually owning it, so I'm not gonna learn what it's like to live with day to day and how easy or hard maintenance jobs will be. I prefer to do my own servicing as well. That way you know it's been done right.

Hi, I have a Meteor 350 with the same engine, so I thought I'd comment. These tips aren't in order, because I have to explain something separately about the valve adjustment itself. One, I got all the parts and tools I needed before starting; that's key! On E-Bay, you can order a first service kit from India; it'll have the oil filter and all the gaskets you need. Two, if you remove the valve cover gasket, you will destroy it because of that semi-circular hole on the left side; it was put in there with black RTV, and it's a bitch to get out. Three, when removing the gasket, you'll need to use something that's softer than the aluminum in the head; you can use a credit card, hotel card, etc. for removing the gasket material that's stuck to the head. Four, you'll need rubbing alcohol to remove the rest of the RTV around the semi-circular hole. Five, when reinstalling the gasket, I put six dabs of RTV in the valve cover track, so ask to keep the gasket in place for when you flip over the valve cover for reinstallation. Finally, when adjusting the valves, I used the go/no-go method; I'll explain below. When adjusting the valves, first, I had a special tappet adjustment tool; this is a combination socket wrench with a screwdriver in the top of the socket; this enables you to hold either the nut or screw in place while adjusting the other. It's a LIFESAVER! What I did in setting the gap was adjust the tappet so that the next bigger size would barely fit in the edge or side of the tappet. IOW, I'd take a 0.10 mm feeler for the intake, then set it so it would barely fit in the side. Then, I took the 0.08 mm, inserted it, and it had minimal, i.e. just discernable, drag. I did the same with the exhaust tappet. I took a 0.20 mm feeler to it, and adjusted it so it would barely fit; then, I took the 0,18 mm gauge, and again, it had minimal drag. The amount of drag you're going for is the same that you'd feel when pulling a sheet of paper between two, glossy magazine, e.g. sandwiched between two copies of "The Economist" or something similar. When the drag is barely discernable, you're there. For me, the go/no-go method worked. Like you, my bike ran SO MUCH BETTER after I was done! Before I go, I'd like to thank you for showing a better approach for dealing with the ignition coil and its associated connections. That gave me FITS! So props for showing me a better way to do it next time. Cheers... :)

yeah i had no plans but a few asked so i put it together. yeah its a lot easier to do than the 650 with much less work and easier to get the gasket on even while its still attached. id say if i had used a new one i would have pressed it into the tappet cover and ran a bit of sealant like on the factory job so far so good after 300 klm

if or when i have to do it-i'll watch this clip again myself...lol best tip by far is if you can avoid it -leave the factory gasket alone. once you pull it i'd say a fair bit of careful clean up is required prior to seating a new one. seat old one from plug side and i bet if i'd used some gasket sealant to hold it in i may have been able to seat it completely by myself... hard to say but possible

Thanks for the tapper adjustment video. I have a Meteor 350 and can only find channels speaking Indian that show this. Of course the Meteor has the same engine. I particularly liked your debunking of the need for the special tool that locks the camshaft at TDC.

I mean, one can just insert stick through the spark plug opening and find when it changes direction as the wheel is slowly turned. There can be only two positions. When both valves are loose, it is TDC or close enough.

A flat blade screw driver will keep the screw from turning (i.e. from changing the clearance setting) while you tighten the lock nut. Having the crank just near TDC is sufficient - it doesn't have to be exact since the tappet clearance while the valves are closed is constant over a large span of degrees.

I've got to check the tappets on the Interceptor before putting it back on the road after the winter hibernation. I remember what a fiddly job it was last time so I've bought a set of tappet spanners, they're not expensive and would be ideal for your bike, have a look on Amazon or eBay. I enjoyed the video and that drone is awesome.

I wish you lived by me but I live in US. The closest dealer to me is 1 1/2 hours away and I don't trust their "technicians" to do maintenence or checkups on my RE which I don't actually have yet. The next closest dealer is 5 and 9 hours away. But I sure don't want to drive that far for warranty work or service intervals that if I don't keep will void my warranty. So I don't know how I'm going to pull this off. But if I do get a Re 350 classic I will definitely watch your channel for tips and how tos. Thanks for posting your vids and God bless.

when you buy -just go to a well know old school mechanic in your area who is familar with motorcycle tappets and he can check them pretty easy. when the time comes just mention no need to remove the gasket and that will save time and money too. one can easily remove the tappet cover and replace it without damage several times but if outright careless -not so lucky

thats about it i'd say. seat amnd tank must come off. but saying that its still easier and quicker than doing the interceptor 650 but and theres always a but...lol the connecters for fuel and electric were not easy to pull out and if i was close to a dealer- im 500 klm away round trip...i'd pay them to do the job and just ride it...lol its not what i'd call enjyable but i suppose it could save one a few $$$

Thanks for the instructional clip, I'm going to remove the engine on my 2020 4,800 klm 500 to replace the crank assembly. Once finished and out on the road did you notice any difference to the engine, maybe a little less tappet chatter.

Hey Warro, just catching up with these past videos. Hope you had a great Christmas with family! I reckon the best thing to do is the pre-bend the flat feeler gauge slightly as best as possible to have just 20mm of flat to not have the holding hand end touching either the gasket in place or any other part of the head. This stops the gauge bending between a point of either the valve tip & the head. The full 20mm face of the gauge will be the only part sliding.

i had a white 350 and also the black. put a sorts exhaust on it and it ran pretty well. never got around to getting a jet kit but i'd say that would have made it get and go even better

Re. added vibration with bash plate fitted: the bolt to attach side rails to the spine of the frame appeared to be a sloppy fit in the rails and engine, perhaps to allow some flexibility. Maybe the bash plate introduced some extra stiffness which did not help? Thank you for all the information!

Thanks Warro - I find it very useful to see what lies ahead before attempting any maintenance jobs! A quick question regarding the tank, in particular the filler cap. There is a channel around the filler with a small drainage hole for any water from washing/rain that gets in. Mine seemed not to drain away, does it simply drop down onto the engine or is there a rubber tube to drain away that I should look for? Thanks again!

Thinking of returning to motorcycling after a 13 year hiatus, with a planned job relocation from dense city life to the rural countryside. The REC350 seems to fit the bill. I'm watching as many DIY videos as I can (thanks Warro and Stuart F.) as the nearest RE dealer is a 5 hour round trip. Only real problem I foresee is that I might need Warro to send over wife for that pair of hands that might be needed. Is there a servicing job that definitely requires a dealer's mechanic expertise?

ive done that job a couple of times just to get some photos.heres what ive found out. 1. dont remove the original rocker cover gasket-it can be re-used several times. 2. if you place a small amount of gasket maker on all 4 sides of the rocker cover and from right side of motor feed it through and then press the gasket in the centre and work ones way around each side -then lay the cover flat on the cylinder head it mates perfectly and no need for additional help. then grab a torck and lift the rocker say 1cm and shine the light about to inspect that it is seated. back to the gasket -there not cheap to buy -i think i paid aud $35 for mine and was only bought as a reserve. its a lot more work involved if you pull a good gasket just to replace it with the other. i think its just a trick to get more sales on the spares and more $$$ in the severice while fitting and taking photos i removed and replaced the same gasket on the blue bike about 8 times

this is for the newer 350 reborn series of singles. on the older version they have lifters so no need to do anything to the classic 350 carby or all the 500 fuel injected models

Hello ,cracking vid,had the gt535 for about a year put about 3 thousands miles on it ,really enjoyed most of them miles but I think the bike was spoilt by a hitch cocks nose fairing and the handlebars under the top yoke it looked the business but the vibration was hideous at times,I now have a Suzuki 250 v-strom which is a awesome bike but I really miss the sound of the single cylinder and I really like the marsh grey colours but not sure if the 350 will be a lot slower than the gt535,cheers again neil 👀

yeah i had a 535gt myself back in 014. ordered one in on the first shipment. i didn't go that much on the riding position as hard on the wrists. had a very nice gearchange though. i also think it was put together better than any classic 500 i owned and there were many...lol the 350 is a good ride and thats why i bought two. on flat running it would stay within range of a 500 on a legal cruise but would lose out on the hill climbs. so 60 mph/100 kph is a pretty easy run for it and i'd say would cruise at that speed for hours on end. thats out limit here or where i live. two things im happy with. i was the first to add the heel and toe to the import models and this is by far best mod and two running 500 rear shocks. this green doesnt ride anywhere near as good the blue i fitted the 500 shocks too

i think that one runs hotter. not 100% sure as i'm really just a rider. what i can say if you ride them hard in the eary stages...you'll certainly know when it happens my score so far 2 inlet valves on 2 bikes and again riding hard 4 power losses on 4 other new bikes the other power lose version goes like this.if one rides the same hills on every bike. one gets a very good idea how it pulls and runs. then you decide to push them harder and faster and suddenly out of the blue it misfires/coughs and you drop power immediately...but not much. next day you ride the same hills and on the test hill you have to drop down one gear just to clear the rise. too late damage done and that bike will never be as good prior to the early days. say if some-one else gets on and rides it. they wont pick the difference and will have no idea its lost power. this is where owning 15 of them new comes into play. so best idea cash em cheap and buy again. in those days i was making huge $$$ breeding birds so buying a new enfield every few months was just play money. breed 6 birds buy a bike-sell bike buy another.......lol that easy and not only just bikes. so treat the bike well in its early life and you'll be much happier in its later life. some-times they crap out early and in other bikes not till it hits several thousand klm but if i bought used -i would never touch a used bike with sports exaust because i know from first hand experiece -one you put it on the game changes and throttle gets a workout

That is an interesting clip. Perhaps you might want to put a small amount of silver anti-seize on the spark plug threads to make the spark plug easier to remove the next time. My guess is that it was so hard to remove because of its very long threads. Also, here is a tip: You can buy stepped go/no-go thickness gauge sets that make it easier to get the correct valve lash gap using only one gauge. I believe Amazon sells them. When tightening the valve lash locking nut it is very helpful to use a screwdriver to hold the adjuster in place while you tighten the locking nut to keep it from moving and tightening up the gap.

@@ridewithwarro I've got a tool, think it was Motion Pro - Tappet Adjuster. It's a small 10 mm box spanner with a screwdriver down the center of the thing so you can hold the screw and tighten the nut at the same time. Not too expensive (about £20GBP) and saves a load of bother!

you may have too much throttle free-play. the cable comes out from below the grip so slide that rubber bit to one side. use a spanner to turn in and out and that should help you out on my bikes one is good and the other a bit slack-i might have to do it myself

@@Royalrider777 on the 500 there is an idle screw BUT you must asjust the right one as there are a coiuple of them. i can't see it at all on this so my guess is its better hidden. my best advise would just call into a local dealer and let them do a quick adj. if you get it wrong it may cost you far more than the dealer visit. the only other adj area i saw is a nut to adj the throttle sliders cables near top of motor. you could try those but i'd mark the nut with a sharpie first prior to moving the stock adjustment setting

its actually called halcyon grey but i think it looks light blue. i also have the marsh grey in same bike on youtube but again i think it looks green.

I didn't have the torque specs for the valve cover when I did my service, so I just turned them until they stopped. After doing that, I made 3-4 passes over the valve cover bolts to ensure that they were at the stops; they were, so I called it a day.

well if they are too tight they lack performance and can burn out a valve. if too loose down on power again and motor extremely rattley. best to have it checked on first service just to make sure all is well and after that ride on

not on either of these two 350 bikes i own but if i did get a CEL ..i'd do this. 1. turn throttle fully clockwise and hold. 2. turm on ignition 3.wait for the CEL to blink 4 turn off the ignition. 5 then release the throttle 6 re-start the motor and hopefully its gone well thats what i'd try .....

@@aaronbrewer1742 after following that setting proceedure i found it did the same on the 650 interceptor ...stay on but once i rode it 2 or 3 times it turned off
