Nice touch to add the lower DS screen into right bottom corner. The speed and draw distance on Ridge Racer DS is quite good for a hand held. Granted the N64 version's graphics are more smoother especially the scenery textures. However you can play Ridge Racer DS while you wait an eternity in the waiting room at the DMV.

What's impressive is that Ridge Racer 64 was a high end N64 game and just 4-5 years later it gets a pretty much one to one port to the Nintendo DS.

And at the same time you have a Ridge Racer game on PSP that is basically on par graphically with the PS2 version of Ridge Racer 5. Nintendo’s success in the handheld industry really held things back on technical performance. In the GBA era the Ngage which was basically a repurposed phone not designed for gaming was pushing PS1 games, while the GBA was basically a souped up SNES. Nintendo always had fun solutions for handheld gaming. The game boys really were practical for portable gaming and as under powered they were especially in the late 90s the games were fun. And what the DS lacked in graphic pushing abilities it made up for with a unique 2 screen set up and bottom touch screen, so you could have super unique gameplay. Seeing how this game looked was what turned me to psp as I was a big ridge racer fan.

I wouldn't go that far - Nintendo Seattle aren't known for technical prowess and they had a highly optimised arcade racing engine ready to go - the only studio the N64 really had with any form of racing expertise was Boss studios who were awful (WDC is an incredible racing engine with piss poor handling). Ridge Racer is easily the N64's best looking arcade racer.

I'm not sure if it's impressive because rr64 is a port of ridge racer and ridge racer revolution on the PlayStation. So basically a 10 year old game at that point. It does look better than the original playstation version though. I do miss the days when consoles used to launch with a version of ridge racer.

😂 noway Ridge Racer 64 was a high end N64 game in any form. high end N64 games are Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, Turok 2. and for a racing game, World Driver Championship which is N64's Grand Turismo

While it is impressive how the DS can pull this game off, I have to give the win to the N64 version. I like to colors, draw distance, and smoother graphics. Nice comparison!

As I mentioned elsewhere, I don't think this comparison does the N64 justice. Unlike the DS, it had to render 4 tracks and dozens more cars simultaneously in its' multiplayer mode and it still managed a good framerate while doing so which is not easy to do.

Oh man the lack of anti aliasing on the DS version makes the game look alot worse. Looks more like ridge racer on the PlayStation but without the texture warping.

A falta de direcional analógico no DS atrapalhou muito (e não adianta jogar no 3DS que tem analógico pq o hardware não faz milagre na programação do jogo). O maior problema de ambas as versões é que a saída dos drifts ainda é dura, herança do RR1 e do RRRevolution. O drift só ficou mais suave e com correção semi automática para o sentido da pista a partir do Type 4.

still remember watching G4 cover the handheld market at the time this game dropped and they noted the touch screen steering wheel as an advantage over the psp offering 🤣. didn't realize at the time it was an n64 port(?)

Joguei muito as duas versões. E considero um empate, pois no N64 tem uma suavização nos polígonos muito bonita e o DS tem um efeito de luz mais agradável. O FPS depois de um tempo se acostuma em ambas versões.

As texturas dos jogos do N64 era muito bem feita,já no NDS infelizmente sempre era pobre comparado ao N64,porém no NDS contava com mais polígonos,ficou ótimo Ridge Racer no NDS mas no conjunto da obra o N64 leva a melhor

A pesar de que es el mismo juego, N64 se muestra superior a NDS, mejor iluminación global, filtrado trilineal del mipmap, antialiasing, mas definición, zbuffer...y mas.

Sin mencionar que en la versión de DS en desafíos de mayor dificultad podía pasar que por cuestiones de rubberbanding los oponentes podían traspasar el auto del jugador al empujarlo con mucha velocidad, cosa que en N64 nunca ví que sucediera Almenos el manejo en la versión de DS fue corregido, no es tan duro como en N64 al usar el stick analógico o exageradamente sensible al usar el D-Pad del N64

The N64 lighting makes no damn sense. Dark and gritty under a bright blue sky? Sure, 90s. That's how light works. Your insecurity isn't showing in the least. That said, the higher resolution gives the N64 an edge the DS can't compete with. And while the DS has far better texture capabilities than the N64, they do nothing to take advantage of them here. These textures were meant to be smudged a bit like charcoal etchings, not thrown like bricks in your face.
